2014-2015 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A quick update: I posted in this thread just yesterday because I had begun to lose hope. A few hours later I got my first II from a school that I have been complete at since mid July. A lot of people complete way after me had gotten interviews already, so I figured I had been passed over. Moral of story, this process is so random and can be so discouraging, but hang in there guys!!! 🙂👍

I know that the plural of "anecdote" is not "data," but if you'll allow me a lack of scientific rigor for a moment, I must admit that your and other stories about getting IIs after people with later completion dates really does give me hope. 🙂 Congratulations!!

Joining in because my state school is ignoring me thus far and I'm starting to realize how little I want to move. 🙁

A word of advice for California residents. There is a reputation that California residents, especially those who have never left California, will not leave California even if they are offered acceptances by OOS schools.... for very good reasons. Many schools are therefore reluctant to offer interviews unless you are absolutely stellar. If you've heard back from California schools but aren't getting love from equivalent schools OOS, I would definitely show some of the OOS your interest by writing a letter or just cold calling the admissions office.

To echo the general sentiment, you'll drive yourself totally nuts if you try to rationalize this process. It'll be an emotional roller coaster for many, so hang in there. Hope this decreases some of your anxiety levels!

Thanks for the advice! I'm a bit in the opposite situation, I've heard from OOS for IIs but haven't heard from equivalent CA schools! O_O

I remember calling one of the admissions boards in panic about my application status in early August and they said that they randomly pick applications out of the pool of completed ones to look at, regardless of when they were completed. Chances are that if you haven't been notified it means they haven't happened upon your application yet. Hope that gives some peace of mind for those who didn't know =)

I submitted a bit later than some of you early birds (verified the 1st of August and am done all my secondaries except for three) so probably not expecting IIs until later, but still neurotically checking emails nonetheless.

I'm glad that you provided us with easing words for your first post, thanks!

So what you're saying is if I post here I'll have an interview by the end of the day...

HI Everyone-First time poster. Mom in full panic mode. Daughter is 3.9, 36 MCAT, lots of research, etc. Has applies to 15 schools and not one interview. Not even from instate schools with average stats much lower than hers. HELP!

I reiterate what I said before, if you have a II already, even one, you are not allowed to be panicked. I have absolutely nothing and I'm sick to my stomach with worry. I can't focus. It's really bad.
Great, just inform the emotional part of my brain of that rule so I can focus too 🙄

I understand the anxiety. In all seriousness, it's still really early. You'll probably be fine. I recall reading a post from someone in the last few weeks that they got no IIs until November, then ultimately got 5 IIs and 2 acceptances. It's not over until it's over 🙂

Do some students/applicants really have their parents get involved like this? I thought it was also funny when I saw people's entire family show up to someone's MCAT exam. Maybe it's just me...

Wow.

You try not to get involved, but it's hard when your child is so bummed out! Didn't go to her MCAT, but would like to support her! I wish you all the best and hope everyone gets an interview! This process is crazy nerve wracking

OMG! Posting works. Daughter just got interviews at Duke and USC. She was really starting to lose hope as she was complete early July. Everyone hang in there. I still think this process sucks.

sigh....no II yet...complete july and early august....

Mannnnn, I'm happy and grateful to have a few IIs from OOS, but I was really hoping to get some IS love, as that is my priority :[ I'm already hearing of people getting IIs here in CA!

I am definitely grateful for my two II, but worried about not getting IS love or from places with family ties. The two II I got were from places without any family ties at all...worried may not make it in even if I rock the interview. It's so depressing when I see the II thread and three of my top choices sent out II in the last two days...none here yet...

An earlier poster was right...soon as you get a taste of an interview you want more! (And hoping posting works haha 😉 )

Complete early June, most secondaries in the last week of June or first week of July, with one or two random ones (IS and a couple long shots) submitted later in July... Fingers crossed for II!

sameee. had almost all of my secondaries in mid-july, but complete early august due to late committee letter. no II's yett 🙁 i know it is still early in the game, but it doesn't mean that i can't panic yett (PANIC ALL DAY UNTIL I GET THAT ACCEPTANCEE)

Let's cuddle together. :sorry:

I like Leslie though she's funny. You're just a penguin (can't even tell if you're a female penguin). Penguins are URM so you have a leg up in this game, no worries. You'll hear good news soon.

i have never posted before. i lurk 24/7. but hey, nice to know someone can empathize with my constant state of fear/anxiety

Penguins lost URM status a while ago...

Hey all, I just wanna try to put some of your minds at ease by sharing my personal experience with this process. I applied in last year's cycle and only received my first II in October for a December interview, and then didn't receive my second II (at my top choice school) until February for a late March interview on one of the school's last interview days for the cycle. I had been waitlisted after the December interview and was subsequently waitlisted after the March interview. The afternoon before graduation in May (less than 24 hours before walking across the stage, actually) I received a call from my top choice school (March interview) informing me that I had been accepted off of the waitlist.

I know that it's always easier to see things rationally when all has fallen into place, but I've been in all of your shoes, experiencing months of silence at a time. I know that the uncertainty of applying sucks, but the takeaway from all of this is that it is SO SO EARLY in the cycle right now. Many schools have only sent out one, two or maybe three batches of IIs, but there are MANY, MANY more to come. Schools will continue reviewing and re-reviewing and re-re-reviewing applications until February/March. Just because you haven't heard anything yet doesn't mean you should start panicking. Live your life and don't stress, it's out of your hands for now and good things will come your way.

I am glad I am not the only one compulsively checking their email....(push notifications do exist, but where's the fun in that?)

my lunch break also involves going outside just to get cell service...just in case a med school calls during the day. I am pathetic.

And on a sidenote, Monday is a holiday so I guess we either get news tomorrow or not until Tuesday 🙁

Hi all. I'm posting here with the HOPE that this may change things. I got my primary verified on time, got those secondaries out, got my LoRs out (a bit delayed) and here I am twiddling my thumbs. What's the deal? I haven't heard anything, no small pool anything, nothing even from my IS or my uni, no nothing. I had some great ECs, a terrific MCAT, a meh gpa, went to a top school … <72 and now I wait. I so dread silent rejections.

Don't people sometimes hear on the weekend? I thought there wasn't a real time schedule for this ish.

I applied MD/PhD so it's going more slowly than MD only but still very stressful, y'all.

A couple schools hand out II's at weird hours. I got one on a Saturday at like 8 for the school's time.

Just wanted to say...thank you =)

And best of luck in medical school!

I'm also just going to go ahead and post since it's apparently a good luck charm!
I'm trying not to check my email every 30 seconds....

Avatar - Check
Panic - Check
14 schools - one rejection post secondary - leaves 13 on radio silence.
Welcome to doubt.

I too keep holding on to the "it's early in the cycle" but it it really? Not even my home state has called me for a date.

I was on a flight for 6 hours so no checking email for me. When I landed, there were only two junk emails. Sigh. Off to meet up a SDNer for the first time in real life for dinner. Hope I don't get murdered. Other murderers here in LA/pasadena area, welcome to join, just PM me.

One II and lots of silence. LizzyM >72... feels like everyone else with similar numbers has a bunch of interviews

no II today, just a rejection 🙁

28 MCAT, 3.65 GPA, 3.55 sGPA. I only applied to three MD schools (FSU, USF, UCF) and 13 DO schools, and I am absolutely terrified I am not getting in. Had a nightmare the other day that this med school representative came to my school to ask my teachers if I was a good student. He wasnt even intimidating. He was shorter than me, bald, wore glasses, chubby with a gut, wore a red shirts that said he was a Bears fan, and nacho stained jeans. He had the SMUGGEST grin on his face and he didnt believe that my contacts were real. All I remember was myself stuttering and then I woke up.
