2014-2015 SUNY Buffalo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted 8 days ago and it still just says this when I check my status:

Secondary Application Received:
Yes
Application Complete:
No

Has anyone else that submitted a week or so ago not been marked complete?

Just got an email saying I'm complete...and also stating they will review my application between now and March 31. ...I'm not going to hold my breath that long, I'll suffocate! Haha.

Got the complete email today as well. Submitted 7/10

long time lurker, II today as well 🙂
any current students here have information on hotels or are willing to host for one night? i'm scheduled for late Aug and it sounds like the official student host program won't be up until Oct🙁

When did you guys submit your secondary/were complete? Just trying to see if they are going in order or not. Thanks!!

Hey everyone,

Just sent in my secondary. Does AMCAS automatically send my LOR to UB or should I have it done separately?

All LORs are sent via AMCAS to the schools. If AMCAS received your LORs you don't have to do anything.

Congrats on the II! I am not a current med student, but am very familiar with the area. Feel free to PM me and I can give you some info. UB is a great school and Buffalo is a very underrated city.

Just got an invite yesterday. Any current students who can host for a night? Also, any one else going there from NJ/NYC tristate area?

Have you confirmed your II yet? I've called the office to confirm but I keep getting the message machine 🙁

Just wondering if anyone could comment on the random review process? Does that mean if you submitted the first day they might not review your app until people after you? Or they just don't offer interview invites in order?

I don't think AMCAS automatically sends letters to any med schools. Schools have different requirements: some want a letter from a prof in your major, specifically want one from a humanities prof, most want two science profs if you don't have a committee letter. Maybe you already assigned your letters to Buffalo in the AMCAS system, but it would be worth checking.

If OP has sent letters to AMCAS and assigned them to schools, this process will be automatic. However, to fulfill a requirement is a different story.

Hey guys so I heard that during your interview day at Buffalo they give you like a 10-min essay to write at lunch? Does anyone know more about this / what the topic may be / if this essay really makes an impact on the adcoms decision?

Interesting! I've been reading research on what items correlate best with success in med school. The only things that seem to correlate are sGPA, MCAT and multi-mini interviews ( not regular interviews). Essays don't predict anything. neither do LOR's. At least one study shows that number of clinical work hours (paid or volunteer) correlate negatively with success. But there was one study that showed essays that were not edited by other people did seem to correlate. Maybe Buffalo has read this study and is hoping to verify whether it predicts success.

All I know is we can get one of a set of questions. Not ethical. So I imagine it is something of why buffalo?

Hey I'm a current MS1 at UB SMBS. It's usually a question to get to know you better... I don't believe it has any weight (but don't quote me) my response was short and poorly written but I was accepted lol. Trust me when I say interviewing at UB is a pleasant experience. The interviewers are very welcoming and so are the students. While waiting for my interview I played pingpong and pool with the med students and ended up having a nice afternoon chat for my interviews. Please don't message me about what questions they asked or what the essay was, I believe that it might be unfair to people that haven't seen this forum. It's a great school and a great experience, I hope to see some of you when you visit.

Call them and hopefully you would be able to resolve it. Also, did manually enter vs copy paste? sometimes the latter doesn't work, just FYI.. Although, I'm 100% sure we all have our AMCAS #s verified after so many dang secondaries!
