II this morning! Did anyone need to change their interview date here? Were they accommodating?

Do people have information on the school's avg step scores and match profile over the years?

No, this is the first I've heard from them since the complete email. I did send them updates in September and December (I have an application tracker to keep track of these things lol).

Can anyone tell me if there are affordable apartments nearby and if their rates are better than dorm housing at Downstate? I'm trying to decide between the two options

I'd try Streeteasy.com, it'll give you an idea of rents in different areas. I was looking at Crown Heights personally.

Crown Heights isn't really a safe neighborhood imo. I would look for something closer to the school.

I dunno, there's espresso shops on Franklin ave and Brooklyn flea is there now. Not sure about the entire area but some parts seemed fine to me.

Yes, definitely. I live walking distance from the school with a couple other med students. I spent a while digging through craigslist, meeting with various agents, and looking at places til I found the one I'm living in. It's a bit of a hassle, but for people from OOS, it really makes sense, and plenty of IS people do it too.

There are definitely decent parts of Crown Heights, btw. I've gone to coffee shops there to study, since there aren't any near Downstate itself. I'd consider living there, except I don't want to live a subway ride away, because then whatever money I saved on rent I'd end up using for the commute, pretty much, although I know lots of people who do think it's worth it.
 
I've been fortunate enough to get an acceptance elsewhere, though I got this Downstate interview just a few days before.

For those of you that have already interviewed or have been accepted, what made you want to attend this interview or chose this school for medicine as opposed to all others?

I got the background check email too. It says it could be for waitlisted students, but I really hope Downstate is only doing it for accepted ones. I hate this "maybe acceptance" since it means I can't get too excited now and I won't be able to fully enjoy it if I get accepted since I knew it was coming.

Yeah its been about 10 weeks since my interview and I haven't heard anything back yet. I'm gonna assume it's a silent rejection :/
 
Question for anyone who's done the Shadow-A-Student program / current students: how was the experience? And what days are best to choose? (eg avoid days that students are mostly doing Anatomy labs etc) Thanks!

I didn't do the Shadow-A-Student program as an applicant, but I'm going to be one of the students that applicants can shadow, and I'm sure that any other students that are participating will make it a great experience for you, should you choose to do it!

Here's our current unit schedule that's available online so that you can choose a day that offers a diverse different group of class structures: http://sls.downstate.edu/registrar/documents/UNIT3_Calendar_2014.pdf ... Our schedule is subject to change from this version, but it should be accurate unless there's inclement weather that leads to rescheduling or something. You can feel free to private message me if you choose a day and want to make sure that our most up-to-date schedule matches.

Just got the post-interview hold email. I've heard they take quite a few off the hold list at Downstate though correct? Interviewed in early December.

I thought they only did snail mail. Is it just for rejections and acceptances?

I suppose so, since like I just said, they sent me an email 🙂 It said I've been placed in the "hold for spring consideration" category.

I would also like to hear some solid numbers on this. Although from everything I've heard, a large portion of the class is from the wait list. Downstate tends to over-accept a lot and get a lot of people that are accepted but then choose to go elsewhere. I think someone told me once that almost half of the matriculating class where accepted off of wait list.

Has anyone that interviewed the second week of December heard anything?
 
There's definitely a good chunk of people who get in off the waitlist, me included. I can't give you any hard numbers, since that's not something they tell us, unfortunately.

Actually, we do have class most Fridays - that week was just an anomaly! If you PM me specific dates or weeks, I can get you the schedule for those days. We definitely have class on all the Fridays this month, at least.
 
Anyone else who interviewed 3rd week of November or later hear back?
