I did last year, and had no problem with it. 🙂II this morning! Did anyone need to change their interview date here? Were they accommodating?
Not really sure about the average step scores, I don't think that they're published, but as far as I know, they hover right at or slightly above the national median. Match lists can be found on their site, here: http://sls.downstate.edu/student_affairs/residency/placement.html
Did you?Anyone else receive a background check e-mail?
Yes. I received one on Wednesday. I interviewed 11/24, but haven't gotten any other news yet.Did you?

No, this is the first I've heard from them since the complete email. I did send them updates in September and December (I have an application tracker to keep track of these things lol).
🙂
Yep, earlier this week.Anyone else receive a background check e-mail?
When did you interview?
Interviewed in early November.
I'd try Streeteasy.com, it'll give you an idea of rents in different areas. I was looking at Crown Heights personally. Can anyone tell me if there are affordable apartments nearby and if their rates are better than dorm housing at Downstate? I'm trying to decide between the two options
Crown Heights isn't really a safe neighborhood imo. I would look for something closer to the school.I'd try Streeteasy.com, it'll give you an idea of rents in different areas. I was looking at Crown Heights personally.
I dunno, there's espresso shops on Franklin ave and Brooklyn flea is there now. Not sure about the entire area but some parts seemed fine to me.Crown Heights isn't really a safe neighborhood imo. I would look for something closer to the school.
Yes, definitely. I live walking distance from the school with a couple other med students. I spent a while digging through craigslist, meeting with various agents, and looking at places til I found the one I'm living in. It's a bit of a hassle, but for people from OOS, it really makes sense, and plenty of IS people do it too.Can anyone tell me if there are affordable apartments nearby and if their rates are better than dorm housing at Downstate? There are definitely decent parts of Crown Heights, btw. I've gone to coffee shops there to study, since there aren't any near Downstate itself. I'd consider living there, except I don't want to live a subway ride away, because then whatever money I saved on rent I'd end up using for the commute, pretty much, although I know lots of people who do think it's worth it.
I've been fortunate enough to get an acceptance elsewhere, though I got this Downstate interview just a few days before.
For those of you that have already interviewed or have been accepted, what made you want to attend this interview or chose this school for medicine as opposed to all others?
Thanks

I got the background check email too. It says it could be for waitlisted students, but I really hope Downstate is only doing it for accepted ones. I hate this "maybe acceptance" since it means I can't get too excited now and I won't be able to fully enjoy it if I get accepted since I knew it was coming.

When did you interview
In the last week of November. I remember one of the tour guides saying it takes around 8 weeks for them to reach a decision so one should be coming out for me now.

Yeah its been about 10 weeks since my interview and I haven't heard anything back yet. I'm gonna assume it's a silent rejection :/
Question for anyone who's done the Shadow-A-Student program / current students: how was the experience? And what days are best to choose? (eg avoid days that students are mostly doing Anatomy labs etc) Thanks!

I didn't do the Shadow-A-Student program as an applicant, but I'm going to be one of the students that applicants can shadow, and I'm sure that any other students that are participating will make it a great experience for you, should you choose to do it!
Here's our current unit schedule that's available online so that you can choose a day that offers a diverse different group of class structures: http://sls.downstate.edu/registrar/documents/UNIT3_Calendar_2014.pdf ... Our schedule is subject to change from this version, but it should be accurate unless there's inclement weather that leads to rescheduling or something. You can feel free to private message me if you choose a day and want to make sure that our most up-to-date schedule matches.
Same for me - excited to have a little prospie to show around 🙂I didn't do the Shadow-A-Student program as an applicant, but I'm going to be one of the students that applicants can shadow, and I'm sure that any other students that are participating will make it a great experience for you, should you choose to do it!

Just got the post-interview hold email. I've heard they take quite a few off the hold list at Downstate though correct? Interviewed in early December.

I thought they only did snail mail. Is it just for rejections and acceptances?

I suppose so, since like I just said, they sent me an email 🙂 It said I've been placed in the "hold for spring consideration" category.
Does anyone know how much movement there is off the wait list and when?
I would also like to hear some solid numbers on this. Although from everything I've heard, a large portion of the class is from the wait list. Downstate tends to over-accept a lot and get a lot of people that are accepted but then choose to go elsewhere. I think someone told me once that almost half of the matriculating class where accepted off of wait list.
I interviewed the third week of November and I haven't heard anything.Has anyone that interviewed the second week of December heard anything?
Just received a pre-interview rejection via email... 🙁 Good luck to all those still in the running!
Woot! Got the acceptance today! Interviewed in end of November.
Does anyone know how much movement there is off the wait list and when?
MS2 here. Timing wise, I believe movement begins late April and has the potential to run through until orientation week. I remember getting my phone call on May 15th! No exact numbers on movement for you though 🙁
At least you heard backHold email today as well. Interviewed second week of November. About time!!
Put on spring hold back in November. Just got an II today!!!
Thank you so much @elprezidente and @Keladry!! 🙂 Didn't realize you guys didn't have class Friday, which is basically the most convenient day for me to visit, but I guess I'll find a way. Thanks! 🙂
Actually, we do have class most Fridays - that week was just an anomaly! If you PM me specific dates or weeks, I can get you the schedule for those days. We definitely have class on all the Fridays this month, at least.Thank you so much @elprezidente and @Keladry!! 🙂 Didn't realize you guys didn't have class Friday, which is basically the most convenient day for me to visit, but I guess I'll find a way. Anyone else who interviewed 3rd week of November or later hear back?

I heard back roughly a month ago.
