2014-2015 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interviewed April too but didn't receive any emails yet... Have a feeling maybe Im getting a rejection

I was accepted off the HFS list yesterday by phone. I interviewed in late March. How long after the phone call did people get the email confirmation? I was kind of out of it when the lady was giving me the details haha.

CONGRATS! 🙂 if you don't mind me asking, around what time did you get the phone call?

Uh oh, so there was movement yesterday. I guess it will just be crawling along now the rest of the summer...

Ah, so can we expect movement to only occur on Thursdays ?

Anyone feel that this year's movement at downstate seems slower compared to last year?

I was placed on HFS sometime in December. I'll tell you, it was a long wait.

Again, congrats. Great news that I am anxiously awaiting myself.

Quick question. Do they both call and email or is it just one or the other?

Thanks!

Hi! I have a question - how much time off do you guys get to study for Step 1? Thanks!

Does anyone know how sending in a new LOR at this point would work? Will they take a new LOR this late into the cycle? Would I just email them and tell them I have an additional LOR and then send it through AAMC?

Does anyone know if they are going to send a follow up e-mail on how to fill out the rest of the admissions checklist?

Hi! I have a question - how much time off do you guys get to study for Step 1? Thanks!

That is really up to you. The curriculum ends the first week of February, and rotations begin the second week of April. Some of our MS2s took their Step 1 in mid-March, giving themselves 6 weeks to study (and had a 2 week vacation before starting MS3), while others took them the first week of April and gave themselves 8 weeks to prepare (with only a few days off before MS3 orientation began). It's really up to you and how you prefer to plan it. But to directly answer your question, you get somewhere between 7-8 weeks off max.

Does anyone know if they are going to send a follow up e-mail on how to fill out the rest of the admissions checklist?

I'm not sure when follow up emails started going out because I didn't get in until a few days from now, this time last year. That being said, if you have any questions, I'd shoot admissions a quick email or give them a call. They're very responsive and will let you know whatever it is that you need to do.

+1 (I sent it already last week don't know if they will look at it prob not at this point unless it's from someone with wow power)

So did you just send it in without talking to them? I think I will just email admissions about it and see what they say.

According to another thread there was movement here today... The waitlist support gp

Me neither. Interview was in April.

Yeah a little disappointed right now. Seeing how people that interviewed a month after me got onto and off the waitlist. Maybe I was red flagged for something? I would definitely go here if accepted. Interviewed in Feb. Just gotta play the waiting game and try to stay off SDN.

Anyone get an "alternate list" email? I just got an email saying that the class is full but I was selected to be placed on the alternate list and that I should do my fafsa and all that.

Alternate list here as well. It's a tacit acceptance, pending people withdrawing from Downstate.

NO it is not a tacit acceptance previous years many people not accepted off this list. Don't get to high. But it prob means even if not accepted you have good chance next year.

Edit: that's prob what you meant but just wanted to warn people not to get to high like don't mortgage the house yet

Got the alternate email as well.

Can any of the current students mention what the probability of getting an acceptance at this point is?

I also got the alternate email. Does anyone know if it is a ranked list?

I would like to know more about this as well.. Is this better than the HFS list? I don't really know what to think of it. Did some people on the HFS list NOT get on the alternate list? If everyone was just moved from hold to alternate then what is even the difference.. Although the email sounded pretty positive...

Question regarding the Alternate List Form, do we have to sign on the line if we want to stay on the list? The way it's indented seems to suggest we only sign if we want to withdraw... Or am I over thinking this? lol...

My educated guess is that at this point, they won't take people off of HFS list --> acceptance. Instead, you are moved to Alternate list and from there you can be accepted (or not!).
Hmm yes that would make sense assuming there still even is a hold list, but I have yet to see anyone say that they haven't gone from hold to alternate yet, so I am still skeptical as to whether or not to consider this positive news.

haha yes I think you are over-thinking a bit.. you sign there after you select yes OR no.

Also got the alternate list email. Will be withdrawing soon. Good luck to everyone else still waiting on good news!

Well, people on the hold list have been accepted. I'm assuming some people have been rejected as well, and the rest placed on this list.
