2014-2015 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know when to send in a letter of interest as well as what to include in the letter? I'm currently on the waitlist. Thanks!

Just received information about the "operation Success" 5 week program. Any current students know anything about this? Is it worth going to? They do strongly recommend it..

Does anyone have any idea how full the class may be ? Wondering if late interview (feb/march) aree for actual seats.

II for early March as well, complete something early august so this was completely unexpected for me. I'm out of the country right now too so I guess I'll be flying back soon! 😀

Hold for spring consideration today :/

Generally, it seems that late interviews are for waitlist positions. I was in your position last year, read previous year's threads and saw that most late interviewees were put on the waitlist ("hold for spring consideration"). I was waitlisted 5 or 6 weeks after my interview (in early May) and was accepted not long after May 15th, about two weeks later. A very large portion of last year's class came off of the waitlist - I'm not sure if it's that way historically - but it definitely was true of our current MS1 class, so definitely be optimistic and give it your best!

Interviewed 12/16, "hold for spring consideration" today.

Some people who have already been accepted should join the Facebook group they sent out! I've been waiting to join, but no one is in it yet haha

Actually, we do have class most Fridays - that week was just an anomaly! If you PM me specific dates or weeks, I can get you the schedule for those days. We definitely have class on all the Fridays this month, at least.

Can I just say I love the Tortall universe references in your name and picture! Lol 🙂

I tried to but I couldn't find it! The name they gave didn't pull up any results.

*high fives*
There's a professor here who looks just like Numair and I've yet to find other Tamora Pierce fans here so no one appreciates it as much as I do.

This really does give me hope. Thanks! Did you send in a letter of intent after the waitlist? This is my absolute top and I would go in a heartbeat.

I didn't send a letter of intent. I personally don't believe in them - I feel that adcoms at many schools receive them, throw them in your folder (if they even bother to print them out) and never look at them again, but that's just me. Feel free to send one if you feel inclined. I got off of the waitlist pretty early - I think WL acceptances started on May 19th/20th (according to SDN posts) and I got a call on the next day whereas some of my friends got the call in June or even later, my point being that not sending a letter of intent really didn't hurt me. PM me if you want more info, I'm more than happy to answer any of your questions.

That makes sense. It seems like some say definitely send it, other don't. But thank you. I will PM you since my interview is coming up here soon.

For what it's worth, I did send one - don't know that it made any difference. I interviewed in January, got put on hold ~10 weeks later, and got off the waitlist in mid-June. 🙂

Yeah I think I would send one because this is absolutely where I want to go. With a 10-12 week turn around I wouldn't hear anything until Early to mid May.... geeez 😱

They can be slow, and it's a long process in general - hang in there!

Shadowed a MS1 here yesterday and it was a really great experience. Went to a lecture, got a full tour of all the facilities and even go to put some gloves on in the anatomy lab. The experience gave me a much better feel for the institution than my interview day so I definitely recommend it for all accepted students. Its looking like a really tough decision between here and Hofstra for me.

How long was the day?

Anyone from the first week of December hear back yet? I interviewed Dec 7...nothing via email or snail mail yet

Edit.. I see that people who interviewed later than me heard back. For rejection do they use snail mail? Lol

Looks like nobody who interviewed was rejected yet

I'm pretty sure they send acceptances by snail mail. They then follow that up with a confirmation email a few days later. At least just in my experience.

ooohh myyy goosshh... downstate really likes to take their sweet time huh. Interviewed on Dec. 17, not a peep.:yeahright:

IS there a fb page for 2015? The acceptance email mentioned a link, but it was broken. Any thoughts?

For those of you who did the Shadow a Student day, how did you sign up?

That's why I asked. I thought there was some super secret other page that had more members...
I don't think it exists yet, but at some point someone (I guess in our class? It's probably our responsibility) will make an 'unofficial' page (without the official Downstate people as admins) and that's pretty much what everyone uses. The official page was used during orientation week, though. No idea when people actually joined - I didn't get in until June, so I have no idea what happened before then. 😛

Anyone want to work on making an unofficial one for before orientation?

just received an email from Downstate. Hold for spring consideration.:eyebrow:..

Hold for spring consideration a little while ago. That makes 3 schools total that I'm wait listed at. So frustrating. :dead:

Welcome to the club. Please enjoy some chips and refreshments while you wait.

Don't lose hope yet. As I've said a few times on this thread, there was TONS of movement on the waitlist here last year. It started on May 20th or so and continued until the very end of the summer - I'm pretty sure someone got in 4 or 5 days before orientation started. Downstate puts many applicants on the waitlist. I'm not really sure why they do that, but just know that the hold for spring consideration is not a rejection. Be optimistic and best of luck to all of you!
