2014-2015 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Called the admissions office today to inquire about he post-interview turn around time, as I am on my tenth week now without a word. They told me it typically takes 10-12 weeks. I don't understand how this process works, considering it seems so many people who interviewed after me have heard back. I'm going crazy.

Out of curiosity, what did they estimate as CoA?
About 64k total, and I'm in state.

The reason why I'm unhappy is bc I'm only offered 50k, all of which are in loans.

You can take out up to the COA - there was a discussion of this above. They "offer" less for some reason, probably to keep people from maxing out their loans if they don't have to (and you probably won't have to), but you can always take out up to the COA.
But yeah, it's a state school. There's very little financial aid available, other than the fact that it's state school tuition prices. Sorry :/

Ok, thank you!

Was accepted and withdrew today, good luck to those still hoping to matriculate! The match list looks really awesome this year.

Out of curiosity, when did you get accepted, and when did you interview? Trying to get a feel for turnaround times. Good luck wherever you are actually attending!

When did you interview?

Sorry I just got some PM's too about this.
I interviewed Sept 7, it was my first, and was accepted mid-October. I kind of procrastinated to withdraw because it kind of feels weird to say no to something you worked so hard for lol but obviously I could only choose one in the end. Felt bad when they sent the e-mail today asking for deposit and promptly withdrew.

Good luck guys!

*Oops, just realized my original post was really misleading. Sorry!

Haha you psyched me out. I thought you got accepted today. Feel like there hasn't been anyone accepted in a while

Accepted (today?)
The letter in the mail says 4/3, but I'm pretty sure the mail came today.
Anyway I sort of found out when they sent me an email asking me to make my deposit, and it started out saying "Dear Accepted Applicant."

Interviewed 2/25

Congrats mate!
Is that the same email where they said they would send your login credentials in a separate email? Did you receive the second enail?

That's the one, also one with the link to the newest match list. And nope, didn't get the second email. Called the office but I think they left at 5 lol

I'm going insane. I interviewed a month before you and still haven't heard ANYTHING lol

Does anyone know how the 4/30 date fits in with downstate's admissions schedule? Anyone think there will be a series of decisions released before it (so people have time to make a deposit etc)? anxiously/hopefully waiting post-interview...

People are accepted up until orientation, so I don't think the 4/30 date has much significance.

No news is good news, I think. Just stay positive and occupied with other things. Like Keladry said, it's not chronological. I did send them an update the morning of 4/3 (two new pubs and an A grade in Biochem), but that might have zero to do with it. Keep the faith!

I'm just concerned haha I called and asked what typical turn-around time is and they said 10-12 weeks yet it seems nobody has waited that long lol

I may call Monday and see about my specific case

I waited 11 and a half weeks, and there were others who interviewed after me but heard before I did. So don't worry.

How much is the tuition? At upstate the tuition is 38k which is a bit higher than I expected. I thought the SUNY's would be around the same.

@Keladry I was put on "hold for spring consideration" about 2 months after my interview.

Do you think it's worth it to send a letter of intent? I don't know what their final decision is.

I believe it's ~35k, not sure why Upstate is 3k higher.

I don't know if it affects their decision at all. I was also put on hold, sent an update letter (with midterm grades and research/thesis stuff), and did get off the waitlist in mid-late June. I don't really think the letter was responsible, but I don't think it hurt. So send one if you really really want to, but try not to stress about it too much (easier said than done, I know).

So would you recommend I hold off on the LOI until (if) I get waitlisted?

Also, do people get accepted after being on hold or do they all get put on the waitlist?

From what I can remember, "hold for spring" basically turns into the waitlist, and they accept from there. I could very well be wrong, though - maybe @elprezidente has a better memory (or knowledge of admissions). In any event, I don't think the timing matters all thaaaaat much, because likely the letter won't matter thaaaat much, so send it whenever it will most make you feel better. 😉

From what I read in last years thread, people definitely get accepted straight from the hold. Not all go on the wait list first. Hold just means they're gonna re-review you then decide.

Anyone know when the "Hold for Spring" happens? Like, if we're on that mythical list, when we hear the verdict?

I mean, it's Spring. Just sayin'. If they're waiting until 6/21 that's just mean.

According to last year, late May.

From what I've heard there is a lot of movement from the Hold list. Fingers crossed I receive good news next month, or else I'm SOL. We should be seeing a sudden influx of people being happy about being accepted sometime in May!

The two times I called in the past 3 weeks they said typical turnaround was 10-12 weeks and that they were mailing decisions out throughout the following two weeks. I am going on my 13th week post-interview and still have not heard anything. Just called and the very nice woman in admissions said "It shouldn't be much longer".

Pretty much getting the same response. Maybe we're waiting for the mail?! Hoping

just to clarify: by "the following two weeks" do you mean april 15-april30?

They told me "the following 2 weeks" when I called on March 26th and on April 9th so I am not sure what to make of it.

Don't want to be that person but...why did Downstate think that the color scheme and font for the checklist webpage was a good idea?

It's in the email they provide asking for your deposit. It doesn't look bad from the outside but once you login, your eyes will bleed.

Hold for spring e-mail just now. Interviewed first week of March

Just got the "Hold for spring consideration" e-mail. Interviewed 2nd week of Jan.

Hfs today as well. Interviewed late January. Thought my interview went perfectly so this one kinda caught me off guard =\

It might have gone really well! It's possible the class is just full at this point, but there'll be movement once people have to commit to a single school. Hang in there, and good luck!
