2014-2015 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can't believe how much movement there was today. I'm excited to see all that action but the uncertainty is killing me.

That's the nature of this process, which is why so many people say that being waitlisted is not necessarily a bad thing. With the withdrawals that some have mentioned above + the action that goes on behind the scenes (those that don't post on SDN), I would imagine that there will be some more movement either tomorrow or early next week. Sit tight everyone and best of luck!

Hope to hear some good news soon! On the HFS list since February ...

For those that sent out LOIs, did you email them to the Director of Admissions directly or to the general admissions email? I was told that it's better to do the former. However, I sent one to the Director of Admissions a few months ago and never received a confirmation so now I'm wondering where to send any additional documents. Thanks!

I would bet that sending it straight to dean of admissions is not a great idea, but I doubt it hurt you-just more likely to be completely ignored. Which they probably are anyway. Yup, I sent one in too to general admissions addresses. They said they "filed" it. I would be more surprised if someone read the whole thing than if they barely glanced at it. Just my feeling-they have a much better indicator to tell if someone will come to their school-looking at other acceptances or lack thereof.

It probably varies by school, though, which is what is so frustrating about all these little questions...

For what it's worth, I sent an LOI to only the Dean of Admissions a few months ago and was accepted yesterday. There's no telling whether it helped at all, and some people told me to address it to the Dean and cc the admissions committee - I don't think it could really hurt you either way, and as people have said, LOIs might/probably go completely ignored anyways.

I have to make a tough decision betweeen Upstate and Downstate: can any current students explain why they chose downstate over other schools (if accepted at more than one), what they like best, what they like least, what they find easiest/most diffivult about attending? Any advice would be appreciated

PM me with your questions.

Still on wait list for MD, but got the MPH acceptance a while back hmm what to do?

I'll take the MPH acceptance for you if it's weighing you down to much.

I don't think there anything you can do except maybe you can write a letter of interest emphasizing how you would utilize the MPH and the MD degrees for the betterment of society and serve NY etc. Prob waste of time but WTH

Just thought it was strange to get in on one and wait listed on the other.

it is really two separate divisions I don't think an acceptances in one guarantees anything in the other. Someone reported the same on last years thread i believe

Edit: no that probably does not make sense maybe MD but not MPH

If you want to PM me as well - I feel like I've probably answered these somewhere on this thread, but let me know what you want to know.

If anyone's interested in getting an apartment near downstate, I'm a 22 year old male looking for a male roommate

Seems like they review Wednesday's and let people know decisions on Thursdays. So we won't be seeing movement presumably until next Thursday

No news on Friday?

@elprezidente Did you mention before that after the first few days of people getting off the HFS list, it's more or less finished?

Got in from the HFS list a couple days ago. Couldn't find any information in regard to financial aid. Can anyone who has received their financial aid package give me an idea of what it'll be like? Thanks in advance.

From my own package, and what I've seen other people post, it will pretty much be all loans, and the loans they give add up cost of attendance without room and board, so don't be surprised if you see a considerable difference between the two numbers. They do that so students can make their own decisions on how much they want to take out for room and board, which would be done by increasing Grad Plus, or that's how it worked for me.

Movement continues throughout the summer - I got accepted late June; people definitely got accepted right up to orientation. Movement may slow down a bit, but it does still happen!

So it seams there was only movement on Thursday and then nothing new on Friday. So probably same thing will happen next week? Hopefully they have not already done the initial bulk of the movement.. I would think it would at least take more than one day.

So..for anyone who plans on living in the dorms, how are you submitting your deposits since the deadline is May 15th? I've emailed them but have yet to receive a response

You gotta figure that at least a handful of the HFS applicants turned down the acceptance, so that combined with the fact that they (hopefully) didn't give out enough acceptances to fill their seats in one day leads me to believe that we all still have some hope for Downstate. Anyone wanna join me for some thumb-twiddling and neurotic overthinking until Thursday?

I mailed a check along with the housing application to their Residential Life Office. The address is on the housing application.
Awesome. Did you get any form of confirmation?

Well, based on last years thread, it seems that the wave of movement wasn't all on a single day. There was one batch and then another batch about a week later that spanned a few days. So I think there will likely be another large amount of movement next week. It's just too bad that I won't have my updated transcripts to send them until later!

I was thinking I'd scan and email my housing application into the office just so they definitely get it by May 15th, and then put the check in the mail first thing in the morning and indicate in the email that it's on its way

I mailed them sometime around the week of April 27th, but haven't gotten a confirmation yet on their checklist page. I did call them to ask what was the best option, and they did say that email would be ok but not preferred. You can definitely try calling, they're pretty helpful.

Emailing the check?

2 of my friends are moving out of their converted 3 bedroom apartment 1 block from campus at 350 Lenox Road. The apartment needs 1 or 2 females to replace them.

Rent is ~$700 if 2 people, $400-$500 if 3 total people. Move in date is flexible. The apartment has a fully functional kitchen and furnished living room. It is very convenient for those who want to live near campus but not on campus. You can walk to the student center and join in all on-campus activities. Feel free to message me. Photos available on request. 🙂

Hi, everybody! Long time lurker, first time poster –
I’ve been preliminarily approved for a fantastic 3 BR/2BTH apartment in Crown Heights. It’s about a 10 min walk to Downstate. I’m a 23 year old female looking for 2 other MS1 female roommates. I’m clean, organized, and from Long Island, looking to explore what Brooklyn has to offer.

Please PM me if you’d be interested and for more information (pictures, etc)!

Hey guys, I hate to repost but for those of you that were interested I've got updated information about the apartment. For everybody else still hunting for housing, I'd def recommend checking out the Facebook group -

So I interviewed quite late, on April 15th. Can anyone comment on how this bodes for me relative to this upcoming May 15th deadline? Should I expect to hear back at the same time as everyone else?

Side note, did anyone here interview with Dr. Meyers? Thanks guys.

If no decision was made on your application yet, then it's likely that you'll have to wait a bit; I doubt any non-waitlist spots are readily available, and those that do open up will probably go to individuals that are already on the HFS list. But this is all just my speculation and educated guessing.

I interviewed 13 weeks ago and I still have not received a decision. I called admin once around the 10 week mark. They looked up my application by AMCAS ID and said there was still no decision on my application and that in ~2 weeks I would know. They were really friendly but I don't want to call and bug them again. A friend of mine who interviewed after me was waitlisted then accepted (reapplicant - game changer?). If your theory holds weight why wouldn't they just waitlist me and put me on the bottom of the list?

So... we all think there should be another batch of movement today correct? I'm anxiously checking my phone..

If trends are correct, yeah I would expect to see movement today. I am also updating email every five minutes lol. Good luck and try to stay sane!

I was one of the late interviewees (late March/early April) and just got the HFS email! I'm in at Stony Brook and will probably be going there, but am still curious as to what the Downstate decision will be. It would offer the opportunity to stay in the city.

Seems weird to be getting the HFS email at this point-- shouldn't they just be accepting/rejecting?

Just got the HFS email also after an April interview. Really confused about what to make of this.

Hmm is today perhaps just a "get on the list" emailing day? lol

Anyone get off the list today?
