I was mostly referring to the # of volunteer hours and research hours some people are listing. More often than not people are listing hours in the thousands for service, research, and clinical hours. I could see maybe in the thousands in ONE of those catagories but in several for the same applicant? That's unreal. Unless most of these people are non-trad's who've been out of school for years and have had the time to accumulate these hours over the course of many years. For anyone who is a undergrad or a recent graduate, I dont see how it is remotely possible to compete with those stats.

I know I have thousands in research and stuff, but yea I have been graduated for a year and a half and have been working a full time research job... no worries at all. Realistically, I think if they see that you have a mixture of interests, including helping people/being with patients, somewhere on your app, and so long as you have a decent enough gpa and MCAT, you will be fine.

Thanks for putting your info in there (if you did), definitely keep spreading the word on that thread's existence. I want to be able to get as many stats as I possibly can so that we can help future applicants see where they fall in line.

As long as it is somewhere I will be fine. However, there are a few schools that I am not a big fan of that if I only get into those specific ones (I won't name them), I would consider taking a year off and applying earlier. My adviser said if I can somehow get a 32+, I should be able to have a decent chance come october my top 5 DO choices I listed. Thank you for your feedback, I am realizing I am really pressing the recommended dates that people say on this forum.

why in the world did you not get in with a 3.48 and 29. When and where did you apply???

Btw that is not underdog at all. You are above the average for both gpa and MCAT at most schools... At least for DO schools (which this is mainly a DO underdog thread as far as I thought).

Yes, im wondering the same thing. How were your EC's? Your stats look pretty good, and im wondering why you did not get in.
 
Alright guys I have a problem. In fall 2013 I took 2 courses with another institution. One was 3 credits and its completed, the other is 6 credits and it is still in progress ( it is a 1 whole year course). The system in AACOMAS does not allow me to put 2 courses in one term if one is completed the other is still in progress. I messaged AACOMAS and this is what they said:


"You will need to move the in progress course to another term."

I asked if they want me to move the course in the term before or the term after. And this is what they said: "You cannot put an in progress term before a completed term."

They are not so helpful. What do you guys think they are trying to say. Should I put the in progress course in Spring 2014 even though I
was enrolled in it in Fall 2013?

There has to be a red flag somewhere or something else going on, that person is as almost at the average for some MD schools. Definitely not a DO underdog.

Wow, I just realized this was a DO thread. For what its worth I applied to two DO schools with those stats two years ago and did not get an interview, yet got 2 MD interviews. Go figure.

Which DO schools did you apply to? I'd figure with your stats, you should at least have gotten interviews from the DO schools...Also, are you an international student?

Going to be applying very broadly to many MDs and DOs.

2 god like LOR's and 1 strong one and 1 good one.

Applying to 13 in state (NY) schools (5 of which are private and are probably way too competitive for me) and 9 OS. All are MD.

Sorry about that, new to SDN, how do you delete posts? I've been shadowing two physicians since I was in middle school, so I assume they wrote me some good ones.
 
3.4 cumulative 3.6 science and a 28 mcat. My breakdown is whats killing me (P12/V5/B11)
I had an AAMC average of 9 for verbal so it was a very bad day I guess.... Retake is coming up though

I have a lot of ECs including starting my own LLC. Being an EMT-B, tutoring, research, and med scribe, but apparently I can't read 🙁

I'm going to say f it and go for it. I've put applying off for years due to other people telling me I can't get in. Retaking classes is not an option because of financial reasons, applying broadly is out of the question too. I'm well aware that this will be damn near impossible but I'll never forgive myself if I don't at least try.

I am sure that shadowing produces the type of experiences needed for them to write such a strong letter, doesnt matter how long you have been there. This is sarcasm btw.

I only know of one person who got what you would consider a "godlike" LOR. Through the grapevine of other professors, it basically said that "if you do not accept this applicant then you are either blind or extremely stupid." (in a more eloquent wording). And that was only possible after like 3 years of ridiculous amounts of hard research work, presenting at conferences, destroying that professors classes (including some grad classes), cat sitting, etc.

Quantity does not = quality

My app is done just awaiting my second MCAT score then I will have a better idea. I am still finalizing a school list though! The anxiety is starting to settle in a little, but I am ready to get this thing started. Good luck to everyone!

100% complete. Working on Secondaries now. Just waiting for June 3rd. My birthday is June 5th, so you know its going to be an awesome week ^_^

I guess I forgot to answer how I am feeling.... nervous as crap. For reals, had my wife just hold me for like a solid 10 minutes last night heh. I just hope I get into a good schools where we can both be happy and not throw us into a mountain of debt that we cant get out of. Definitely getting in the panic time, really double checking that this is the path I am called to go down, before throwing $2,000 at applications and interviews heh. I woke up this morning refreshed and reinvigorated for this path.

So needless to say it is very up and down. Its a stressful time.
 
Yeah I'm freaking the **** out. MCAT is on june 5th but I'm still trying to suubmit on time. About done with my MD personal statement, just need to trim it down for aacomas.Probably 90% done with the rest of the app, just need to spend a few hours proofreading everything. Not a fun time.
 
I am still stuck on deciding exactly which schools to apply to as an international student. I want to apply broadly to maximize my chances. Can everyone check out my thread " International Applicants for 2014-2015 cycle" and give me some opinions?
 
So are these types of stats worth applying at all...

cGPA - 3.03
sGPA - 3.03
MCAT - 27

Or is this TOO much of an underdog?

Any mitigating factors? Upward trend? Solid EC? Work experience? At glance I'd say chances are closer to rejection, but I wouldn't say you're definitively out.
