Just out of curiosity, what's everyone's backup plan if residency doesn't work out this year?
retail

and i dont hate retail so it would not be end of the world but i really just see myself in more of a clinical setting/know i would be happier there.

It is for you guys. I didn't decide to participate until it was too late, except to scramble.

You're looking for the end, while I'm waiting for my game to begin. 😉
That dragged on to. I found out mid April where I was going, but waiting to get interviews and hear back from places is not fun. 😛

I'm gonna beat rxlea to the punch, 1.5 days! RAWRRR! 😛

but tomorrow night i'm assuming none of you will be functioning / sleeping lol

Good luck everyone. Thanks to all the advice given by the seasoned members of this forum. I know its helped me a lot.

Cheers

Tomorrow is going to be a long night. Ugh. Come on! lol

Anyone pull sql data? If so, have a favorite tool? /random waiting for match day banter
I think it depends on how large the data set is. What are you planning to do with it? I think there is a tool/wizard for extracting to SAS, and I think you can extract into Excel but Excel is limited when it comes to size- correct me if I'm wrong. I've never had to do it personally. Do you have an informatics person around you can ask?

24ish hours. Eeeeeek

Zero focus today, going to be the slowest day ever. Kind of wishing I had tomorrow off, should be a short day anyway though.

Yes, long day today. I'm doing outpatient clinic work this afternoon and that makes the day go fast. I'm going to watch some movies and play some video games tonight. Tomorrow off day! Woot!

What made you change your mind?
During a summer internship, I met some of the coolest pharmacists (some residency-trained) who were confident and great as teachers. Then I went to another hospital system for a number of rotations over the last few years and met some of the most arrogant people I've ever come across, and their personalities were awful. Positive patient-centered care was replaced by constant derogatory remarks and holier-than-thou negative attitudes; I wanted no part of any of that.

I'm back at the original hospital I mention, and I've become inspired again. There are really good people out there doing really good things. I'd rather be that person than the one who makes it a point of honor to yell at a physician.

so just wondering, we find out from an email from the national matching service?

Hey Guys,

So as I have been awaiting the match results like everyone here, I have been acquiring about positions in case I do not match. This is an email I received from one of the recruiting companies:

Thank you very much for reaching out and sharing your resume with us. As you may be aware, there no longer is a shortage of Pharmacists in the US. Therefore, hospitals are able to fill their positions much quicker and no longer are willing to hold a position for someone to graduate and pass the board exams. Years ago, this was a common practice, but sadly, not any more.

In reality, the end of April or into May is the best time to start applying to opportunitites. I would even go so far as to wait until you are licensed and can then start immediately. If you would like to recontact me then, I will be more than happy to do whatever I an to assist in your search, but right now is just to early.

Kind regards,
Adam DeBruin RPh./President

Basically I am getting the same general vibe from each recruiter/company. I just got off of the phone with one of the recruiters who said they won't hire anyone without a residency for a hospital job which I understand (hence why I am applying to residency). There are jobs out there but I can't seem to draw interest from any of these companies or hospitals! Out of the 500 (yes I know, a little obsessive) emails/CVs/resumes/calls that I have sent out, I have heard from 1 and it was for the IHS. Let's hope us going for PGY1's land that residency!! Fingers crossed 🙂

From another thread ...
Because I have had it drilled in my head that residency is outrageously competitive, I ended up applying to 16 programs, several of which are very well regarded and top tier hospitals. I ended up getting 16 interview invites, and actually interviewed at 14 due to time constraints. It has been a very exhausting last few weeks.

:wow:

This is what a match email reads:

To: KARM12 - Applicant Code 12345

This message provides you with your Match result for the
ASHP Resident Matching Program for residency positions
beginning in 20xx.

Congratulations! You have been matched to:

Residency: AWESOME HOSPITAL X

Program: PGY1

Program Code: 123456

12ish hours! I'm going out tonight for a margarita. Some peeps at my rotation site are taking me out tomorrow for either a celebratory or a "sucks to be you" dinner/cocktail hour.

Either way, I'm grateful for supportive people in my life.

can't believe match day is almost here...best of luck to everyone in a few hours!!

I hate when they whine. Most of the stuff they whine about I cannot change, "Dr X doesn't start rounding until 4pm." How is this my problem? 🙂

I keep stuff I want to whine about to myself or share it with friends outside of work. I'm sure no one wants to hear about my problems. lol

In case if you don't get matched and you would have to go through the scramble process, should we contact programs directly while we apply them through Phocas ?? Will you guys contact individually as well? Sorry, I am getting confused here.. Need some advices..

Outside of a couple of programs last year, I didn't contact programs outside of Phorcas. I probably will this year though.

What about the participating Phorcas program...? Should we contact them after applying through Phorcas??

I would contact before you apply. Get your name out and make sure the spot is still available. A few programs came up in the scramble list but the position wasn't available anymore due to funding or whatever, so it's good to see before you fork over $25.

I've been a hospital pharmacist since I graduated in 2009 but I applied for a non-traditional residency this year (one month on, one month off...2 years). I've only be going through the process for about a month and all I can say is I had an incredibly sleepless night last night. I can't imagine what other people have been going through. Having said that, good luck to all!

Good luck to all - I am excited to see who we match with at our program this year!

Remember, not the end of the world if you don't match - one of our former students didn't match a couple of years ago, he is now my neighbor and was able to get a job at a local hospital - had to do per diem work at a small rural hospital at first, but all worked out in the end!

I stayed up to 3:00, and slept for a few hours. I'm wide awake now and nothing. This is killing me. Going to watch Grey's and then check again.

I swear if I get one more email from groupon hahaha

Good luck today all!
