Southwest Airlines is the best airline because there is no charge for last minute changes.

Thank you. We all just gotta be grateful for what invites come our way and hope for the best.
 
Just a heads up... I just got an email invite for Seton Hill, so maybe some of the schools are still handing out invites in waves? I barely turned my app in by the deadline, so maybe thats the reason for my late invite?

Just out of curiosity, what is up with these hospital programs? I just don't see ortho and hospitals hand in hand. Do they have good reputations? Didn't apply to any, simply curious. Congrats to everyone btw!!

Maybe a previously invited applicant subsequently turned down the interview to go to a different interview and you were next on their list. If so, his/her loss is now your gain. I imagine we will see more of this as the invites pick up and conflicts arise. Best of luck to you.

Hospital-based programs in NYC are popular because in order for medicaid ortho patients to get approved, they first have to be screened at the hospital or dental school (even if you are a private practice accepting medicaid patients, the patients have to go through one of those institutions first). Therefore, the hospital programs have a lot of medicaid ortho patients to choose from which isn't a bad thing because you will learn more from difficult cases.

Hospital programs allow you the chance to earn an ortho certificate just like the other programs out there. Most of the hopsital programs out there today also pay you some type of salary as well, so you get to come out with less debt that your private school colleagues.

You also get to see some crazy syndrome type of stuff that private practice punts over to the hospital. I had an assortment of 10+ cleft lip + palate patients in my patient pool and thought this was normal for residency. Apparently it was not. Other co-residents treated patients with conditions like Treacher-Collins syndrome, Pierre Robin syndrome, cleido-cranio dysplasia, ectodermal dysplasia, etc. Stuff you only read about in Oral Path textbooks.

I received the application complete email from them yesterday, got the interview invite today.

Hmm, interesting. I guess you trade having to work in a hospital (which probably isn't that much different) for getting your pick at a ton of interesting cases.

So is this mostly an east coast thing? And for the sake of discussion, is treating those oral path patients really that useful or more of just a cool experience? The orthodontist I make retainers for commented the other day how he has only seen one case of Cleido-cranio dysplasia in his whole career. I suppose it would help for those rare occasions?

Vanderbilt and Mayo Clinic are most definitely not on the east coast.

The syndrome patients represent the extremes of malocclusions you will see in private practice. For example, cleft patients have maxillary impacted canines coupled with several missing teeth and maxillary deficiency. You have to put your ortho and oral surgery and restorative hats on to figure out a treatment plan to make the occlusion and smile look good working with what you've got. It makes you think harder so you are more prepared when you see those impacted canines taking u-turns in the sinus in private practice on the teenage princess patient who has a meltdown when you tell her she must have her deciduous canine extracted in order to bring the canine in.

And what do you know, I recently have been covering for a private office that gets all the cleft patients in the county coming into this solo doc's busy private practice office right alongside the princess meltdown patients and other assorted suburban kids. Ironic.

what are some good questions to ask them maybe some things that are important to have in a residency...that is where hindsight comes in handy lol

Congrats !!!!!!! I am getting nervous here 0 interviews so far, and I see three programs that I applied to sent the invites. I guess I need to be patient and wait hopefully for interviews from other programs !

So far, there are 8 schools here that I applied to and I only have 1 invite. I'm estimating that we're about 25% done with the invites so there's still plenty left out there.

Do pretty much all of these places send all of their interview invites out on the same day, or do they have multiple days that applicants are notified?
 
I'm still waiting too..none so far..🙁 congratulations to those who got called!
 
If you saw the interview dates announce here and you didn't here anything, there is a great chance that you didn't make it.

The good news is that things may stir up and you may get a second shot when some applicants who have a lot of invites and have conflicts in their interview dates that they have to decline somewhere, which means programs may call you back to fill the open positions.
I suggest you check the updates here once a week or longer. To know things that are not belong to you anymore is more hurtful than helpful. Since if you get an invite(s), they will not invite you here, but directly to you by other way. Look up here just to see what's going on so far would be better.

Just got an email from MUSC to interview. Looks like they sent out another group today. Congrats to everyone getting interviews!

Same here....seems like almost half of the schools are done with sending out interview requests.
The next 2 weeks are going to be even more stressful for those of us who are still waiting for some good news 🙁
