Let's get this started (early, I know)! Post anything here relevant to post-doc interview questions, invites, or acceptances. I will try to alphabetize sites every few days at the top of the list.

As interviews start to come in, please post within this thread or PM to it me (click my username and then "start conversation") if you wish to remain anonymous.

Best of luck to everyone! For what it's worth, although I was incredibly stressed about post doc applications, in the end it was a much better process than internship apps.

To those of you who applied to sites using both APPA CAS and those not using APPA CAS: how did this work?

I am applying to primarily research post-docs. Almost all of them are not using APPA CAS (all but 1). However the one using APPA CAS is one of my top choices. My worry is, if I hear back from any of the other sites with an offer prior to match, that they may not wait till I find out about the site who is using APPA CAS. I hope that made sense :)

Anyone with experience on this and want to share?

My worry is, if I hear back from any of the other sites with an offer prior to match, that they may not wait till I find out about the site who is using APPA CAS. I hope that made sense :)

Anyone with experience on this and want to share?

I was in this exact position last year - applied only research focused post-docs, but had one top site that was still listing through APPA CAS. Perhaps my experience deviates from the norm a bit because I only applied to one APPA CAS site (and thus didn't have to deal with the separate recommender emails for each site), but I found it midly annoying but mostly painless.

As to your other question - that was also a concern of mine! Keep in mind that this process is different than internship... meaning that there isn't really a restriction on sites being able to communication interest directly. After I completed my interview for the one APPA CAS site, the director e-mailed me with a message basically stating that they were not able to extend official offers until xx date, but that they were highly interested in my app and would be interested in producing a competitive counteroffer should I receive another non-APPA CAS offer first. I ended up choosing another site, but it was nice knowing that there was a work around had this APPA CAS site ended up being my top choice at the end.

And I just want to echo the other posters - postdoc apps come at a stressful time (ie internship), but I found the process to be much more comfortable.

APPA CAS doesn't necessarily coincide with sites using the uniform notification day. I applied to all research sites. Several of them used APPA CAS but still sent out offers early. Some of them did not use APPA CAS but used uniform notification day. And if you have a site that does give you an offer early, you can feel free to ask for a reciprocal offer from your higher-ranked site.

As for the process itself, I found the non-APPA CAS easier. However, non-APPA CAS you don't get confirmation that your rec letters were sent, so that was a bit more stressful for me.

Hi guys! Back for more after internship apps! I've heard some mixed info. on how many sites to apply to for post-doc. I'm thinking 6-7. Is that about right??

I have definitely heard similar. I was told around 5-6 is fine and that most find the post docs they want. ::fingers crossed::

For those applying to non- APPA CAS and research sites -- when are your deadlines. I have some sites that say "open until filled", one with a specific deadline and others that have no mention of deadlines or when they start to review.

Members don't see this ad :)
The good news about the postdoc process is that outside of APPA, there is no universal deadline. New positions are posted all the time, so if you apply somewhere and don't get it, it's not as bad (compared to not matching for internship and waiting a year). I applied to 4 sites (really 3, but one of them lost funding for the track I wanted so I applied to a different track). I'm purely clinical though, so the folks who are gearing more towards research sites may have a different take. 6-7 sounds like a healthy number to me. Good luck!

6-7 would likely be fine, although that of course depends on the applicant's competitiveness and a few other factors. But at the same time, there are fewer folks applying for formal postdocs than for internship, given that many opt to directly enter the workforce instead.

I applied to around 12, which was about twice as many as was realistically necessary.

How's everyone doing with post doc apps?

I'm enjoying that they are pretty uniform for me in the materials (cv, cover letter, letters and sometimes representative publications).

Also I am not sure about others in how your choosing post docs. For example, at this stage it definitely is about fit but also to a larger degree about location and where I see myself settling down. How about for you all?

I'm running into a similar problem. I have a couple areas of interest for post docs, and there are a good amount of sites I can choose from. I'll most likely end up applying to more than 6 (my list is at 9 and not changing unless something mind blowing comes along). My husband and I are looking at it as an opportunity to complete my formal training AND maybe find somewhere fun and different to try out

I'm applying to clinical sites. Many are on APPA CAS but not all. I have one site on APPA CAS that makes no mention of a cover letter. Instead they ask for "A personal statement. Please upload your Personal Statement under Documents – “Personal Statement”. A personal statement is required for each track that you are interested in. " It goes on to outline the 4 ares the personal statement should cover. My question is should I still upload a cover letter? Much of the information they are asking for is addressed in my cover letter and I don't want to be redundant. Maybe a shortened cover letter to outline what I've provided?

Thanks!

I applied last year, and I had one site that asked for a personal statement. After discussing it people at my internship site, I decided to go with a cover letter, and I got an interview.

I have been thinking about this too. Do others think it's okay to send a cover letter instead of a personal statement?

**Apologies for cross-posting**

My brain is probably in a fog due to internship, but I had a question regarding the entire peds neuropsych process. I've registered for APPCN match through NMS (and will be applying to sites outside of the match as well), but I was under the impression (for match sites) that the application process is/was similar to that for internship (e.g., uploading everything into a database). Please tell me that I won't have to apply to 12-14 sites on a paper application and mail everything. <<<---- first world problem, for sure

The rationale I heard from my internship supervisors was that a cover letter is a personal statement, it's just a personal statement structured in letter form.

Anyone also applying to jobs too while applying to post-docs?

I quickly applied to a post-doc yesterday that said "rolling admissions" for 4 slots, just in case. I'd definitely take that one over any of the others. I plan to apply to 5 post-docs. I hear the VA post-docs are supposed to use APPA where the other clinical/research positions are not really required, and sometimes prefer to not have to abide by the XX notification date deadlines and can make offers in advance to scoop up the good candidates. Anyone else hear this?

I see post-doc as a year for specialization, at least that's my rationale behind it. I am not looking forward to writing 5 cover letters/personal statements. Did you guys modify yours per site or use the same one?

That is correct about research positions, at least. I applied to VA research fellowships and only a few of them used the universal notification day. It's kind of a prisoner's dilemma sort of situation because a site can be hurt if they abide by it but others don't. I know of a few that specifically started sending out offers early because they'd gotten burnt in the past and all of their top choices had accepted offers prior to notification day. The good news for applicants is that it means 1. You may get an offer early, which even if it isn't your top choice could give you leverage for a reciprocal offer 2. Other applicants you are competing with may accept other positions and "drop out" of the running.

As for clinical VA post docs, I didn't apply to any but my fellow interns did so I know a little about them. I can't think of any that sent out early offers. They all seemed to use the notification day.

I am applying to both jobs and postdocs. So far, only the VA sites are using APPA CAS. I am modifying a paragraph in each to make them more site specific.

Emory SOM Postdoctoral Opportunity

Information about training program, faculty, and application process can be found at:
http://www.psychiatry.emory.edu/education/fellowships/professional_psychology/index.html

For more details and/or questions about the below position, please contact Dr. Dorian Lamis at [email protected].

Serious Mental Illness and Suicide Prevention Clinical Research. This one year clinical-research position entails involvement in two projects focused on preventing suicidal behavior in patients diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BD) who present to the Grady Hospital Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic (BHC). As part of the Bipolar Clinic and Research Program (BCRP), the purpose of both studies is to better understand the genetic, environmental, and psychological factors that contribute to suicidality in BD patients. The first genetic/epigenetic study examines the potential interaction between the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTT) and childhood maltreatment contributing to subsequent substance use and suicidal ideation/behaviors in African American BD patients. The second study aims to identify treatments to reduce suicide risk factors, enhance protective factors, and improve quality of life through a 6-week group-based intervention program. The fellow will be expected to take a leadership role (i.e., project manager) in the clinical research efforts of the team (e.g., recruitment/ screening of study participants, program implementation, supervising/training, data analysis, manuscript preparation). The fellow will also be involved in conducting diagnostic intake assessments and individual/group therapy with patients at the Grady outpatient BHC diagnosed with a variety of serious mental illnesses. Additional opportunities to conduct research and publish results on suicidal behaviors and associated topics will also be available.

I am also applying to post docs and jobs and I was wondering how you are going about applying for jobs. I have seen quite a few positions listed which I would be eligible for once I graduate, but I don't know if I am eligible to apply for those positions now since I would not be able to start until Fall 2016. Are you planning to apply for jobs during the spring and summer since you will be closer to completing your internship?

My training director advised my cohort to hold off applying for jobs, particularly VA jobs, until January at the absolute earliest. Jobs posted in February or March would be appropriate to apply for since the hiring process at the VA can take multiple months. However, if you are looking at non-VA or federal positions, I would apply and include in your cover letter when you would be available to start. Willingness to consider your application will of course vary from job to job and the urgency with which they are looking to hire, but can't hurt to try!

Side note, my internship is completed as of 7/1/15, so if you are at your site until August or September you may want to wait until April or May.

I am focusing on postdocs now and will start to look for jobs in February or March at the earliest since they probably cannot hold positions for that long.

How common are purely clinical post docs (general)? What about in neuro?

Most formal post-doc training programs are specialized to some degree, although there are handful that seem to label themselves as a post-doc in general clinical psychology. The University of Kansas Medical Center used to have one.

Neuropsych post docs are competitive by quite ubiquitous in the states.

For neuro. Purely clinical? As in 100% clinical and 0 research? Those are pretty rare. Most will have some research component built in, like 15-25% in many cases, I'd guess from those that I know directly.

I haven't even applied yet I need to get on it. So in denial it's already post doc application time!

@psychrat -- sorry about the rejection! Sending good vibes your way for many offers!

Since post doc applications are much fewer in number, I suspect most people will not share their success/rejection stories because it will be easier to guess who they are.

Depends on the interest area most likely. We're still like two and a half weeks away from our deadline and have 30-something applications in progress on APPACAS. Things like neuro and trauma track positions will get a ton of applications, especially within the VA.

Just checking, but if the site I'm applying to only requires GRADUATE transcripts, do I still have to have an undergraduate one sent in to APPA CAS? None of the sites I'm applying to require one.

The first application I submitted didn't require them either, and I didn't send APPA CAS my undergrad transcripts. APPA CAS still "verified" my application within a couple days, so I'm assuming we don't need to.

Last year APPA CAS required it but I think they've fixed that.

They may require it after selecting the candidate though...

Entirely possible, although I never had to submit any for my applications or after being selected. Will definitely vary by site.

I would say that if the application materials don't specifically request it, no need to send it (unless asked later).

But with most schools offering transcript services online, that will hopefully at least save you some time if they end up being needed. Having to drive around to the 3 undergrad campuses I attended to request transcripts in person when I was applying to grad school was a bit of a nightmare.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm going to not send an undergrad transcript unless a site requests it since it seems unnecessary. I'm really excited all my materials are done and ready to be submitted! My only issue is getting LOR in...trying to find nice, non obnoxious, ways to prompt one of my writers that "I have an application due very soon" so my materials are 100% completed for their review...

Hey everyone! Just wondering if anybody knows about how long it takes for postdoc programs to let you know about your interview status after you submit your application? Thanks and good luck to all!
