2015-2016 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Received my financial aid information - 0 EFC and 0 student contribution - and have been offered a "Direct Med Unsubsidized" loan for ~$42k. I completed the modules they told me to complete online (MPN, Counseling), and am now confused about funding the rest of my education.

How do I get another $10-20k in loans? How quickly can I get it approved and disbursed to me, especially if I end up under-estimating my cost throughout each semester? I have very minimal savings ($5k) and my parents are up to their eyes in debt, so they will not be able to help at all.

Call the financial aid office. They are good at explaining everything and will sit with you and walk you through it. There is one loan with a sliding scale where you can take out as much as you need. I was in the same position...only with LESS savings (parents are absolutely awful with money and "borrowed" from me quite a bit), and sat with financial aid figuring out the best approach.

2/11 interview, received rejection today. Good thing I got accepted to my instate school O_O. Best of luck to the rest of you.

I was recently accepted here and wanted to know if there is there a second look here or anything for accepted students.

You can sign up to shadow a current student, or come to research day which I believe is April 11. Both are a great way to interact with current students and find out about the daily life here. First years just finished exams and got scores back so we're pretty much chilling for the next two weeks, so it's a good time to come check the school out.

Were you never put on hold for spring? Were you just rejected straight after interviewing?
No the email said something along the lines of "we are unable to offer you a seat in our upcoming class." Im guessing DoctorDozer got the same email

I also interviewed on 2/11 and have yet to receive a response 🙁

When did you get the rejection letter? Earlier this week?

Did anyone who interviewed on 2/11 get an acceptance?

Thanks for the info! Who should I contact about this because I haven't received any emails yet, only my acceptance letter in the mail

Yup. Said I was a nice guy but not their type. Said something about some other guy they were talking to. Idk. I think they just didn't want to hurt my feelings. Still hurt. :/

Call the admissions office on Monday between 9-5 and ask to speak with ilana Levine (she's great)...tell her you would like the opportunity to see the school again prior to the May 1st deadline of deciding where you wanna go, and she will discuss all options with you, get your info and send that to one of the designated students you can shadow, who will get in touch with you immediately to set up a shadow date. Or if research day is something you are interested in, she will let you know the details on that if you inquire.

Does anyone know if Downstate is receptive to an additional letter of rec after being put on the HFS list?

Anyone interview with Dr Yager!? PM me maybe?

Ok. Thank you so much!

So it seems post-interview rejection decisions are being done by email this year? Have any HFS or acceptance decisions gone out recently for people who interviewed in January/February? I interviewed 2/8 and have yet to hear back. I know it can be 12+ weeks to get a response after interview even at this time of the cycle but am definitely getting anxious.

I interviewed late January and was put on HFS about 6 weeks after my interview. I was recently accepted

Interviewed late January and haven't heard back yet. Did anyone apply MD/MPH and are still waiting to hear about the MD?

Just got put on HFS today :boom:. I am grateful that it wasn't a rejection but still a little disappointed! Interviewed Feb 17th. Am wondering how long i should wait to sent a LOI..

Is HFS "hold for Spring?" Just got that by email. Interviewed at the beginning of Feb.

All the cheap schools be waitlisting me. Here's hoping there's a lot of movement this year!

Do you mind letting us know the specific date you interviewed? I interviewed Feb 16 and have yet to hear a peep

From what I've read, HFS and rejections are all via email and acceptances by mail this year.

HFS just now.. interviewed Feb 22nd. didn't send a thank you email or update email post interview. not my top choice school, interview day confirmed that for me.

either way, downstate... you need to be more organized, because honestly, a HFS in April, weeks away from traffic day, is unfair.

thankfully have acceptances at other schools. good luck to everyone! I'm sure if you're on HFS and WANT to go here, send an interest/update email.. they're responsive as are most schools.

HFS Today Interviewed 2/24

Hoping for some good news in the weeks to come.

^^^Are you all IS or OOS? I interviewed 2/22, no response yet. Thanks

Hfs today as well. Guess I spoke too soon. From looking at last years thread there seems to be decent movement from this list in May.

Hopped on the HFS waitlist as well. Anyone aware or have any idea as to how much waitlist movement we can expect this year. Through my snooping around, it seems like many people have withdrawn acceptances and such so there may be several spots open. Thanks!

Have March interviews heard anything back yet?

Have had dreams about Downstate the past two nights lol..two nights ago I dreamt that I got accepted, and during last night's I dreamt that I went back for a second interview..had to fly over the ocean in a helicopter to get there. When I asked my interviewer when he expected for a decision to be made, he told me I would have to come back for a third interview with him. I think this process is slowly driving me insane :wacky:

Mid-March interviewee here - no word yet.

I called the admission office a few days ago and they said eight to twelve weeks...seems a bit long for March interviews. That brings us to May / June.

I really wish they could let us know before April 30th🤔 Interviewed second week of March and they told us 10 weeks at the end of our interview day...praying its sooner!

I think that's the generic answer they give everyone
