2015-2016 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

Is a shorter interview (30 min) generally a bad sign?

One source (either a school, someone on here, etc) said length shouldn't be used to judge good vs bad. For all you know, they really liked your app and they didn't need an hour to be wooed. (Ya know, they are busy.)

Length of interview is not correlated to how well it went at all. I had a 1.5 hour interview and got in, my friend had a 35 minute interview and got in. It all depends on the interviewer really

6 weeks... absolutely nothing 🙁

lol. Dude, I've been verified since 6/2, complete 7/6, and nothing.

y'all gotta chill...i was complete july 3rd, and wasn't offered an interview until january 6th, without being put on hold or anything, and eventually got in...this is a very very long road. just relax and don't pay attention to the timeline of other applicants lol

Oh wow. What were your stats?

Just received II! Complete 8/19, OOS, LizzyM 71-73.

Got scheduled for 10/21 at 1pm, which is not the greatest time for me, but at least I live relatively close by (Boston). Does anyone know how long the interview takes?

Also, does anyone have a good breakdown on how receptive other NYC schools are pre-II in-the-area updates? I don't want to send a letter that will reflect negatively on me.

y'all gotta double chill... MS2 here, I got an II in mid-February for the last week of March and eventually got in. There will be many early interviewees that get in, get waitlisted, and that don't get in, and amongst those that get in, people will choose to go elsewhere. Applying was the most stressful year of my life, but in hindsight, once your apps are in, there's nothing that you can do but wait. Try to keep yourself distracted with other things, and celebrate when the IIs come in.

II today, my 1st one! Scheduled Oct 2oth

IS, non traditional, average stats, strong ECs.

anyone know the post interview acceptance rate?

g6eARQB.jpg

do the math.

Lol I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up on this school despite having an interview. Those OOS numbers are pretty low
The number you actually care about though isn't up there. The number of matriculants isn't nearly as important as the number of acceptances they gave out. So your odds are definitely better than the table makes it seem.

acceptances (including waitlist movement) are usually 1.5x-2x the number of matriculants

Might it be possible that the remarkably low number of OOS matriculants is due to the applicants matriculating elsewhere as opposed to being rejected from SUNY? Even if there were 3 acceptances for every OOS matriculant, the acceptance rate post-interview would be <20% and that seems incredibly low to me (but what do I really know).

the proportion of matriculants from oos and is should be roughly the same even if that was the case. Its not like New York applicants are on average less capable than anywhere else in the country (like say some rural state)

Anyone knows how long the interview may take? My session is scheduled at 2:00 PM. Should I expect to finish the whole interview before 4:30? I need to get back to Mega Bus station at 6:00 PM (It seems I need about 1 hr to travel from Downstate to the Mega Bus station). Thank you!

Right, but I would imagine an IS applicant is more likely to attend SUNY vs another school (due to preference) than would be an OOS applicant. So I would guess that the OOS acceptance number is more than 3-4x the matriculant figure in this case.

I hope you're right. I'm oos too.

I wish that was the case, but the data seems to indicate otherwise. Hopefully it's just a statistical anomaly that can be explained through some external variable, such as what @Superstah_11 said.

Interview invite. In state.
Complete in mid July.

Do any of you bros know if downstate (or any other suny) is receptive to in the area emails? I don't want to send one unless they are.

Hey Hi! Those of you attending interviews, I was wondering if you're printing your secondary app for just in case? I wanted to do this, but I realized I don't have access to my secondary app anymore. Is this the case for everyone? Just wanted to check! Good luck everyone 😉 !

Anyone knows when the interview day ends?

Anyone knows when the interview day ends?

It depends whether or not your interview is in the morning or afternoon. Mine was in the morning, and we were done around 2 (though I stayed til around 3 talking with the other interviewees who hadn't gone yet). If your interview is after lunch, you'll be done whenever your interview is done (around 1 hour in length)

II!!!! Complete 08/05, OOS, LizzyM 74.

Is Downstate receptive to in the area emails? I have an interview at Hofstra on December 3rd, but Downstate scheduled me for October 28th. It would be nice to move my Downstate one back because flights are expensive, but would it also hurt my chances to interview later? Let me know!

Thanks!

I wish I got an II, but instead I got a request for my spring grades lol. Dang, I have an interview at another NY school and would have loved to save some money (assuming downstate would even want to give me an interview at all). Keeping my fingers crossed anyways 🙂

I read in last years thread they're super accommodating for this kind of stuff. I'd shoot them an email
