2015 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I started to submit on my phone in bed, but then realized that there were several things that could potentially go wrong and got up to do it on my laptop.

I'm usually at work at 7 am pacific so I actually slept in and woke up to submit.

Ok, that part is over, verified a few minutes ago. Now about that school list...

Verified as well! I have a question milski-- did any of your classes have an x instead of the / that indicates no change was made? For some reason, a significant number of my classes have an x, but I can't for the life of me see anything different? I went through my courses meticulously, so this is really concerning to me!

Did they change a BCPM classification?

Hmm, I just realized that it's my status they switched..I spent 5 years in undergraduate, so it looks like they altered my junior standing to sophomore standing. Does anyone think that adcoms will frown down upon this alteration?

I had a couple of classes with X-es like that last year. I could not find a difference either but I only checked the grade and the amount of credits. Is it possible that they have re-classified them? This year most of the classes were transferred from the last year application and I ended up with only /-s.

AdComs don't know what the change was, only that there was a change. I doubt that they would care too much, considering that they get to see the final outcome.

I wouldn't mind so much if it was one or two, or even a handful, but man-- it's like half of my transcript! I really hope that this isn't viewed poorly 🙁. I followed what it said in the guide and placed my 5th year as my senior year as well. I guess there's nothing I can do about it now.

Other than that, my bcpm gpa was higher than calculated-- so good news on that front 😀!

They are supposed to determine years based on credits only, regardless of when you actually took the class, maybe that's what tripped you?
I was so excited about getting verified that I forgot to check my GPA. Got a bit of a bump as well, which is rather surprising.

Yep, I think that's definitely what tripped me. I saw both credits and year standing in the applicant guide and, silly me, I went with my year without giving it too much thought. Hopefully adcoms don't look askance at this, I can't believe I didn't catch that in my ~20 reviews of my coursework!

Yay for the gpa bump 🙂!

Nice, I'm still waiting. My transcript is messy and I have lots of classes from a bunch of schools. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes them longer because of that. Crazy that the ball is rolling!

I had transcripts from 4 schools total, and I thought that mine might be held up a bit due to the larger number and a grad course I took with credit equivalents and not actual credits. Despite that, they were quite speedy. I'm sure yours will be coming shortly 👍!

It's definitely surreal that the ball is rolling, we've all worked so hard to get to this point! My application status says processed and made available to my school list. That gave me the chills when I first read it haha.

Sweet, that's good to know. I'm worried about some of my classifications because they are kind of weird, so we'll see what they come up with!

Need to get off of here, someone who submitted a whole 14 seconds after me apparently was verified already and mine hasn't changed from "ready for review" uh oh... haha, this is terrible. Is that what my life has come to?

Very cool some of you are verified already! Just submitted mine.

Still waiting on the transcript from my handful of community college classes I took while in high school. I guess they'll send it when they send it - but should I submit my primary app if it's not received yet? Pro: CC transcript was free; Con: I ordered it via fax three weeks ago.

Submitted just now.
Last transcript and my one letter outside my committee letter were marked as received today.

And now we wait.

When it is marked as received is there anywhere it shows a timestamp? Mine is marked as received as well, but I just was curious. Congrats on submitting! I submitted 90 minutes after it opened and I feel like I won't get verified for a month 🙁

Chill 🙂 Last year I think I submitted 2, maybe 3, days after AMCAS opened & it took about 10 days to verify. Anyway, there is absolutely nothing to do during the month of June if you summit early... just relax & pre-write a few secondaries. You all just tossed the ball into their court and now begins the big painful waiting game, get used to it.

& congrats for getting submitted everyone, g/l.

No time stamp that I can see, just the day that it was entered as received.
Nothing goes to any of the schools until the 27th regardless so it's just a month of relaxing (other than finals next week that is, damn quarter system)

I am not submitting this cycle, but I have several colleges/universities to take into account when I am ready for another cycle. How are credits/years determined? Since I have four transcripts to take into account, I don't know what will count as first year, second year, etc.

It's explained in the instructions. Basically you go with the number of credits as a cut off.

Like Leslie said - at the start of each quarter you look how many credits you have accumulated so far (counting all schools) and based on that you determine your year. For example, you have taken a year worth of credits at School A, then start at School B, your first course at School B will still be considered taken as a sophomore, even if you did not transfer any credits to that school and were treated as a freshman there.

Can't we get a day off or two? or three? lol
No, need to work on those school lists and researching the schools first. 😛

Peddle, peddle, little hamster... (to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star..")

Hahaha.. I know I know silly me. I have my list, I sent 18 applications, I might add a couple more.

Are you using the secondaries from last year then since they usually don't change?

Yes, I plan to use the secondaries from the school specific threads. One of the benefits of being a re-applicant is that I already have written plenty of those, so I have some material to work with. I don't think I'll get started on those this week though - there is the part about choosing schools and I'll probably read at least a bit about each of them. And completely unrelated, I have to find a reasonable job for the next year... So that means brushing up my resume as well. Did I mention how much I detest writing? 🙂

You guys are giving me a panic attack. Just kidding. But I really need to get those MM statements done. Just one more to go.

My sweet baby has been extra needy these past few days. But I finally bit the bullet and signed into AMCAS on my phone. So I can edit and tweak things while he nurses/sleeps.

Ugh I hate writing too! So much work! When do you hope to start a new job?

I work from home 8 hours a week. And it's not medical at all. Not impressive but I find staying home with my infant important.

Gotcha, that makes sense, I will have to take a look closer at those.

I enjoy writing about myself, haha. I have an internship that just started last week, but I'm still waiting for access to their computer system, so that is really disabling at the moment. I also need to line up a job, but that won't need to happen in a couple weeks.

A lot of things are happening, but I'm glad the first part of this race is done.

Submitted about an hour ago, so paranoid that there is an error SOMEWHERE in all of that writing! Anyway, time to pre-write a few secondaries this weekend or next, time to take a nice break and take my wife to dinner tonight!

Ugh, the pressure to start pre-writing those secondaries is on! Took yesterday off and will probably take today off as well. All I've done so far is compile last year's questions in a word document. VCU's essay last year was sort of beastly, wonder if they're going to change it! It's a never ending process...

Should we collaborate with making a pre-secondary spreadsheet? I have one from my undergrad, but I have no idea if it is current. I'd be up for division of labor. Google Doc?

I can probably spend some time helping with this over the next few days. Google Doc or Spreadsheet? Secondary questions? LOR requirements? Mission/school focus in four words or less?

I'm down with this! I've compiled all the secondaries from my school list except one. Haven't included LOR requirements or mission/school focus though-- this sounds like a great idea as well 👍.

Last transcript in this morning. Secondary prewritten. Waiting on verification and 2 letters

It's very important. My wife is probably going to work from home or take some time off with our children as well when they are infants. Plus you'll have less opportunity for that in about a year when you start med school so good to make use of the time now!

It's hard because I know what is important to me, and I think I know what is important to ad coms. And I feel like they aren't aligned sometimes, but I'm not one to compromise my values. I'll do the best I can and hope that it's good enough.

Anyone know if I should mark "some college" for my mother, who was a stay at home mother? She took one night school class at the local community college when I for fun, never seeking a degree, but it was technically at a college.

I'm not sure what to put for my father either, he is now deceased so I can't ask. He was a licensed general contractor/construction supervisor. I don't know if he went to college.
