2016-2017 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So still no update on the Addictions track or PTSD track for Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System (West Haven)? I can't tell if they sent out the acceptances and I'm the only person on here who applied to these tracks or if they are actually sending out notifications for different tracks days apart. Does anyone know if sending out notifications for different tracks on different days is normal? Also if you applied to one of these please like this or comment back. Thanks!

Does anyone know if the univ of North Carolina site (child track) listed today from 11/22 is chapel hill?

I applied to the PTSD track too and haven't heard yet. Fingers crossed!

Regarding the Center for Behavioral Medicine post, the invitation read "for both the forensic and clinical tracks."

Congrats! Which track was that ?
Regarding the track, there was no track specified. I know that they were no longer offering the "under-served track" so I applied to just the clinical track. I hope this is answering your question. It seems they have emailed invitations in at least three waves (based on this site), so hopefully there are more to come!!!

I actually asked TD's via email before I applied about this... 2 to 3 didn't reply, 1 said no, another said no but apply anyway if you think you're a good fit, and the majority said yes, that they do consider terminal masters in determining cut offs. I hope that helps!
that does help thank you 🙂 i have two more sites whose deadlines are 12/01 and than i can officially put this part behind me! I'm also going to start looking for plan B sites, which I think will help me calm down and wait. I'm in a school psyd program so I have some options.

I applied to both of those tracks and I haven't heard a word, and someone else in my program also applied to the PTSD track and also hasn't heard. I think we're still under consideration!

Thank you for the reply 🙂 I applied for Clinical Neuro Track which has it's own match number. This is the one with Witchita Consortium though, was that the one you applied to?

I also applied to them. I'm a bit worried that I don't have a phone that they can access since I'm researching abroad now (noted on my cover letter that I'll be best reached via email). Should I email to inquire my status?

I've heard no from several people
hours for internship should only include doc hours, however its favorable that one has a terminal masters degree

This is what they said in their interview invite email to the Clinical Health Track folks, so it sounds like notifications for your track have not gone out: "NOTE: If you applied to more than one track, and if you have not already heard from that track, you’ll be notified of your interview status directly from that track coordinator very soon"

It is a super anxiety-producing process... I've honestly been avoiding trying to come up with reasons why I might have been rejected from a site. I mean, generally-speaking, sites just tend to be super competitive. Most sites reject 60-70% of applicants without an interview. That can't be easy because most of us are pretty damn qualified.

I've reviewed internship apps two years in a row now (funnily enough for an internship that rejected me for an interview back in the day) and it's really, really difficult. A lot of people are qualified and seem like they would do quite well at our site. However, there are just too many people who have certain experiences or qualifications that seem to match the training better. I realize now that it doesn't mean you're a bad applicant at all. It just means that you didn't have some certain qualification and/or experience (or the level thereof) that someone else did. And, yeah, I recognize that it's really unfair. I wish there was a different way to do it, but I'm not sure what that would be.

I mean, in principle the "different" way to do it would be for sites to be more direct sometimes about things -- "we are primarily interested in applicants with ample experience in motivational interviewing," e.g. Sometimes they do say things like "we expect you to have extensive experience in giving this kind of assessment", or whatever. But not that often! And of course I imagine it's a bit more complicated than that.

I very much appreciate your response! This seems about like what I imagined.

A lot of the brochures do seem to be pretty similar... particularly for the VA's. The differences [at least as far as I can tell from the brochures] are nuanced.

I think I personally would wait to email them. They listed their notification date as 12/15, so if you haven't heard by then, I think you could ask. But, if you stated it clearly in your cover letter, I would guess they'll know to email you. Good luck!!

Has anyone heard from the Vanderbilt VA neuropsych track? They have a tentative interview date for December 5th which is fast approaching!

Also waiting on adult health track for Rush. Haven't heard anything!

Also waiting on adult health at Rush. Seems like either they haven't gone out or all of us got passed over. Fingers crossed for everyone!

Not sure if this helps, but I heard from the Generalist Track yesterday and scheduled my interview for Dec 5 (only December date left available from what I saw). There were other January dates open as well.

Like syzergy said above, I think it's always best to assume that you'll get a rejection (on 12/15 if nothing else). Then if by some chance they are reviewing on a rolling basis, it'll be a pleasant surprise! I've had no site invite me to interview later than the first contact listed here that didn't explicitly say--even just in their email to invitees--that they were reviewing on a rolling basis.

If a site strongly prefers in person interviews, but you already have interviews scheduled for the dates they provide, how do you approach this?

I would be honest and say that you unfortunately already have interviews scheduled for that day, but that you know they strongly prefer in-person, so you're wondering if there are any other options.

I got the same invite around 12 (central time). So for those waiting to hear from Lovell, it may be that they're sending e-mails out over the course of the day (or next couple of days).
