2016-2017 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I turned in many applications the day they were due and got interviews at those sites, so I don't think it matters as long as they are on time.
Hmm. I'm trying to figure out why I'm not getting many interviews. I applied on the deadlines, but it must be something else. Thanks!

Do you all think that applying to an internship close to the deadline (or on the deadline) hurts your chances of getting an interview? Does anyone know if this would cause them to (a) think you're not interested, (b) think you're a procrastinator, and/or (c) look at your application last?

I got an interview to a site I applied to the day before the deadline so I do not think it is a HUGE deal! 🙂

I have some serious problems with procrastination (and I had a lot going on at the time), so most of my applications were submitted between 11:00pm and midnight on the due dates. I have 5 interviews out of the 11 sites I applied to, waiting to hear back from one more. I was really expecting interviews from a few of the rejected sites, but who knows if that was a factor.

Awesome! wonderful that I am not alone (with my husband). 🙂
So I guess ... I may be not clear but... let's say you like site in NYC but then your wife does not have anything in NYC, but both of you have interviewed in Philly. So you rank Philly as first and then follow with individual preferences? Cause this is wquite different than if you were as individual? right?
if you were alone - you would rank NYC since you like it best?
You have to decide for yourself how to order your preferences of possible outcomes.

Ok, thanks! I applied close to the deadline as well. I still haven't heard back, so I'm not really sure how to approach this in regards to speaking to supervisors and ranking. The website says to contact supervisors in areas of interest and the TD to discuss the program and have questions answered if a site visit cannot be scheduled. But I'm not sure how it would be interpreted if I emailed supervisors without having spoken to the TD yet. Any fellow applicants have any thoughts or experiences with this?
LOL, that is a wonderful reply... I love it...

There are no options for phone interviews "We will only be offering interviews at this time in person on site, as phone interviews are not an option during this phase."

At what point is it proper etiquette to contact programs that you haven't heard from despite the date passing?

FYI for those who finally got the dates for the Bedford VA: I emailed the admin to request the "earlier" interviews end time (my schedule has changed drastically from the date we sent rankings!), and mentioned I could do the two other days if anyone emails her and wants to switch (they're actually better for me now). She forwarded the email to the TD, cc'ing me. SO, if you are thinking about making the request for an earlier "final interview," know that she'll be forwarding to TD and cc'ing you.

This process is bringing out my neuroticism in a serious way.

When did you hear from them? I still haven't heard back since sending them my preferences.

About an hour ago. I suspect she's sending them out by interview day. Someone posted about a week ago that they called, and she told the person that most people got their first choice, and that seems to be the case. I'm sure you'll hear today.

Hey guys i know we're all freaking out but i want to remind everyone that at the end of the day some messed up stuff is happening in the world and we're all safe and doing well...not that we haven't worked hard or that internship won't effect our lives but what we have is first world problems ... i pray for what's happening in Syria.

Good luck on interviews!:highfive:

Amen! Thanks for the reminder.

Not a big deal at all. In fact, from our end, we would have to look in a separate area to see when the application was submitted and have to click on a separate link for each applicant. That effort is not worth it so I doubt anyone knows when your application was submitted. Most reviewers don't even start looking until after the deadline and most come in the last 2-3 days anyway.

I'm wondering if this means we are still waiting on hearing about Giddings State School for this site.

Well I guess this one went out too. I wonder if we only get one or the other? Did you apply to the Mart Residential Treatment Center as well?

I applied to both and only got an interview to MRTC. Hope that helps!
Thanks for responding! I suppose that's what happened with me too, even though I didn't get a rejection from Giddings State School - only got an invite to MRTC.

did you apply to many sites because of couples match?
thanks
I applied to 18 sites and my partner applied to 15. We made sure that for any one site one of us applied to, the other person had 1-2 in the same geographic area.

It is very stressful! Unfortunately, we only overlap in one place so far... My partner still has to hear from 3 more sites though.

Does anyone know the differences between VA internship selection criteria and medical school/academic hospital internship selection criteria? Are they ever at odds with each other?

I can only attest to my own experiences. I have Practicum experiences in children's hospitals, but have been rejected from every children's hospital I applied to. However, I have a VA interview and an interview at a medical center. I have no VA experience.
