2016-2017 Interview Thread

The advice that I have gotten so far from the radiology residents at my home institution is to put your top choices somewhere in the middle of the interview season, because you will have had practice in other interviews and you won't be so burnt out as you will be by the end. Schedule maybe one(?) "practice interview" in the very very beginning and then a couple of your "middle" choices after that.

I think in the end, it doesn't really matter all that much. But definitely don't schedule your top choice first or last.

This. I tried to do the one's I thought I cared the most about last. Thought I would get 'better' at interviewing throughout. In reality I probably peaked halfway through and ended up being very burnt out and zoned out towards the end. Fortunately my #1 program ended up being a place in the middle of my lineup anyways.

Great advice! That definitely makes sense. Good luck to everyone this upcoming season!

hey guys thanks for all the updates. How are you doing with the prelim invite?

Only one prelim invite as well (but to my home program)

Just one prelim med invite for me so far.

Only one prelim invite as well (but to my home program)

Same only one prelim so far.

Same here, one invite by home school and a second one (U of South Alabama) who offers to interview with their prelim-rad program when you are invited for a rad interview. It looks like it's slow across the board. I was just wondering. Again thx for the update. Enjoy your success and hope to meet you on the trail.

2 Rads invites, 1 Prelim Surg invite and 1 Prelim medicine which said they would interview if the rads program interviews me.

3 rads invites, no prelim invites

I applied to 15 transitional years, 15 prelim med. That seemed like it would be enough but not totally sure.

Anyone else getting invites to some of the more competitive programs they applied to but not the less competitive ones? (Even though invites have gone out for both)

Also, 1 transitional invite, 3 radiology invites so far. Radio silence today on all fronts.

It all depends on your stats. I applied to 10 TY and like 45 prelim IM. It is not too late to add more. But if your numbers are up there, no reason to worry.

Big programs will probably wait at least for the MSPEs and will likely take their time. I applied to very few top programs (WashU, Duke, John Hopikins, Emory, UTSW). None of them has issued invite yet (at least not to me).

There are a handful of highly regarded programs that have sent out invites already, albeit not "Top 10" programs.

I would consider UF, University of Chicago, Jackson Memorial, and Mayo Arizona to be Top 50 Programs

I've got 4 surgery prelim interviews so far. I'm guessing that's because none of you all applied for them 🙂

Where did you get IVs from? I haven't heard anything from my pre-lim surgery so far.

I feel like I'm a fairly solid candidate: 254 Step1, 264 Step2, top quartile of my class, good amount of teaching experience, a few pubs and some ongoing research. For prelims, I applied both regionally including community programs and to some top programs. I know transitional years are super competitive so I don't know if I have a shot there. Thoughts on maybe adding 10 or so more prelim programs. I hate to spend more money but obviously would rather spend a couple hundred more dollars than not match.

Do some programs add more interview dates? Like Uchicago for instance, 2 interview dates. really?

Yeah. Last year U Chicago had more than one round of interview invites and tons of dates

Your numbers are very good. I would not worry too much. But stories abound regarding good candidates who didn't match because they didn't play it safe. I would just tick an additional 10 checkboxes and pay 200 extra for safety. It is not time to count my friend. I am sure you are fine, but the safety afforded by 200 extra bucks is well invested. You call.
Good luck.

Bummer I was really hoping for a Texas A&M invite... Crap.

I hear Texas schools show a lot of in-state preference for their first round of invites. No worries, you may be in the next batch.

I hope you are right. So how long would you wait before getting in touch with a program that you would rank high on your list? This one would be definitely up there for me.

I'm also a UTSW student and this program is high for me as well so I can understand your concern. Be patient though, they have a ton of interview days and I like your chances just being from UTSW. We probably have the same advisor but she told me around mid October if you haven't heard back, then you can consider reaching out to express interest.

OK Clutch. So that rules out the theory about Texas School showing late preference for Texas Students...
I hadn't really talk to Dr B about that, so I didn't really know. It is useful info. Now the fun part will be to figure out who you are. Don't spoil the mystery. I will try and guess...

I have no idea, but I'm in the same boat as you. No invite, was high on my list, and got that generic message from the PD a couple days back.

According to the 2014-2015 thread, there were two reported waves. First was 9/22, second was 9/26 but that doesn't mean there weren't more. Additionally, there weren't any reported Drexel rejections in last years thread until 10/20. It's still super early, hang in there!

-All the best!

For Jacobi, I also received my invitation 2 days ago. The dates they had for interviews were more than those listed above.

Those were the remaining dates available after I booked my interview. Since you have to call the residency coordinator to book your day she only told me the available dates remaining. I didn't get to it until the end of the day so there were probably a bunch more available but were all filled up and not really relevant to this forum.
