2016-2017 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So the interview is really 3 hours long? I figured they'd be interviewing more than one applicant during that time.

No, the interview is not three hours long and they interview everyone in the group at the same time, not one by one (there are multiple interviewers)... There are MMIs and a 45 minute one on one interview. The rest of the time is a tour and lunch. Read the email, their website and this thread for more info...

How do you think the letter of recs are differentiated ? Class rank is important. I am unsure if the grades have an honor component or not.

DEPENDING ON HOW HIGHLY YOUR REFERENCES RECOMMEND YOU AND HOW STRONG THEY THINK YOU WOULD BE AS A RESIDENT!

I just got the interview invite via e-mail. For each available date, does anyone know why the two sessions you can choose from are different in length? One of them is 3.5 hours long and the other is 5 hours long. Why is there such a difference? I assumed you'd be getting the same type of interview regardless of which session you choose. Maybe the interview doesn't take up that entire period of time? Sorry for the newbie questions, this is my first ever in-person medical school interview.

Different number of interviewee's on each day?

Has anyone heard a date for when the next admissions offers will come out?

The first of each month is the date on which the individual that interviewed you will "present" you to the board. On that day, they will decide whether or not you are admitted. I interviewed on 10/28, and we were told that our group would probably not be presented (or ignored?) till December 1.

Do you know if calls go out the week of the decision or if they do it on a specific day?

Are mmi new this year...I interviewed last year and all I had was a one on one interview

I'm starting to question the legitimacy of the rumors for a Nov 1st release date. I really hope someone can prove me wrong with an acceptance soon.

Highly doubtful that acceptances will come out today. Earlier in the thread it was stated that the Admissions Committee meets to discuss applicants on the 1st of the each month. Not that acceptances are sent on the 1st.

Even if a decision is made today for recent interviewees, I assume that it takes Admissions at least a week or two to formalize the acceptances and email them out. Keep an eye on your inbox in two weeks, not today.

You can check and see how many students have applied/interviewed/accepted offers on their website on the right side of their admissions website page under "admissions tracker."

I was accepted a couple weeks ago!!! First school I have gotten an acceptance from 🙂 Woooo!!!
I interviewed a few weeks ago too.

Looking at last year's thread, it seems that people who interviewed in late October heard back on November 20. Is it possible that decisions could be released before December 1?

I think so. The lady that informed us didn't sound 100% positive.

I was told the next round of admissions offers would be released mid-November, so I'm assuming before Thanksgiving they'll be released.

Hi guys, to answer a few questions:

Afternoon interview slots have been ending around 3:00-3:30, but the school reserves the extra time in case it runs over with the morning slot or has a hard time finding replacement faculty interviewers, etc. To be safe I wouldn't book a flight out before 6:30 just to make sure you have plenty of time to get to the airport in case interviews are running late and you do have to stay until 4. Also, winter is coming, so I imagine traffic delays will only worsen during the next few months.

The school is clearly not vocal and firm about its dates for announcing interview results since the dates probably aren't set in stone and the school doesn't want to be held accountable to timelines it couldn't maintain. I would expect to hear back from the school about 2-4 weeks after interviewing, with possible delays due to the upcoming holidays. The Detroit area code is 313, so you'll simply have to become accustomed to hyperventilating every time your phone rings and every time you get an email notification. One of the many cruelties of this process.

Lastly, the school is not updating the admissions tracker as often as they should/could. I see it as a ballpark estimate and not a real time counter (which would be nice but somewhat of a commitment to maintain).

I had heard that the admissions committee meets the first and third Thursday of every month. So if that's accurate, the next release date would probably be after this Thursday.

Congrats! I wonder if that suggests those of us who interviewed at the end of October will be hearing back soon too. I would assume that they discuss waitlist and new interviewees at the same meeting.

Wait listed at Wayne -___-... Realistically do I still have a shot or lost cause?

Of course you have a shot! I mentioned this before, but it was heavily emphasized during my interview that being waitlisted isn't the end of the road!

They told us at my interview that the majority of the applicants should expect to get waitlisted at this time and that they would have a lot of movement as the cycle moves forward.

I was put on the waitlist a few weeks ago and have received no email today. Going to assume that means I am still on the waitlist. Anyone else in the same boat?

Yes. Interviewed here 9/12, waitlisted 10/17. Seems like they are already moving people off the wait list so I have hope.

Hey guys so I got an email yesterday encouraging me to apply to Wayne and after researching the school, fell in love with it and added it to my list. Hoping it's not too late in the cycle!

So it seems like if we haven't gotten accepted off the waitlist by now then we shouldn't expect to this month?

I wouldn't lose hope. I know they say not to compare this cycle with last cycle since each one is different, but looking at last year's thread there were acceptances off the wait list in early and again in late November.

Fingers crossed for all of us.
