Does anyone know where I could find a list of residencies that Wayne students have matched into? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Wondering the same thing...

Got waitlisted myself 3 days ago, similar LizzyM score. Theres definitely a chance, it depends on how many of their accepted applicants matriculate. Did you by chance ask them where you're ranked on the waitlist?

Or does anyone know if they even have a ranked waitlist and how they respond if you ask??

Current student here. Can answer questions if needed. Good luck everyone.

- Do most students live on or off campus first year?

- What are approximate monthly living expenses like?

- Do you need a car in 1st and 2nd year?

- What do you like/dislike about being a student at WSU?

- Anything else about Wayne State that you can provide useful insight into?

Thank you and good luck with your studies 🙂

Last I heard about 65% of the M1 class lives in the city of Detroit (most in the Midtown, Downtown, Corktown, Brush Park areas), while the rest are mainly living in adjacent suburbs like Ferndale, Royal Oak, Troy, Dearborn, etc. Each year more and more students opt to live in the city due to the increasing amenities (new restaurants, coffee shops, entertainment venues), living options, improving safety, and the convenience of a decreased commute. About 1/2 of the students I know (including myself) live within a 10 minute walk of the campus, which is awesome! Students who are not living in the city are most often students who attended Wayne State, Michigan State, U of M, etc. for undergrad and are living at home. Some students are renting houses in adjacent suburbs mainly because they have a large pet (and need the backyard) or wanted a cheaper option by renting a house with multiple roommates.

Renting in Detroit is significantly cheaper than renting in other large urban centers, which is great since you can get a "steal" with even the new modern housing options. That being said, rent is rising quickly and this probably won't last as the secret gets out that Detroit is not a city on fire and has a lot to offer for significantly less. I have friends living in Midtown who are paying $300-400 a month with a roommate by living in older buildings (50+ years) that have been recently renovated. You always have to be wary of the landlord/management though to make sure you aren't choosing a place where the heat will go out in the middle of winter with no help in sight, etc. Other students are opting for brand new luxury options which can run you $800-1200 for a single, etc. Most places include water/gas and some even include electricity. There is a wide range of housing options, though the trend is more and more luxury/modern living with rising prices as the market demand continues to grow and gentrification continues. As with everywhere else, you can go big or be conservative with your living expenses.

You absolutely don't need a car your first two years (possibly even your third and fourth years if you don't mind riding the shuttle for rotations at Henry Ford - though a rotation at Beaumont would be difficult without a car). I don't have a car as an M1 and have been managing fine. Uber is always an option and the new M1 rail means I will be able to travel Downtown (about 1.5 miles) from my apt for about a dollar. Parking Midtown/Downtown can be expensive (most housing options in the city charge an additional parking fee) and the city loves to ticket.

I posted earlier in this thread about the unique traits of Wayne that I have found to be strengths. Worth mentioning: the huge Alumni network (Wayne has the third highest number of practicing physicians in the U.S.), one of the largest medical campuses in the country with eight hospitals and 2000+ physicians on campus, one of the highest concentrations of medical professionals in the country (Midtown), the ultrasound curriculum (see previous post), the proximity of a large undergrad campus (significantly more dining, workout, study options when an undergrad is within walking distance), and Detroit as a hip and quirky rebounding city with probably the most vulnerable urban population in the country, which translates to early and meaningful clinical experiences. Cons are the hefty OOS tuition price and that the school is in transition with curriculum (next year the school is switching to a systems-based curriculum for the incoming class), which means there will undoubtedly be hiccups and kinks that can only be worked out in time and with student feedback (which, imo, they gather to a fault with the sheer amount of evaluations we need to complete).

So I received my "Welcome to the WSU School of Medicine" email last week, when will I receive the actual official offer, and is it by regular snail mail?
Also, I'm in a second bachelor's degree (already finished my first one with all of the prerequisite science courses, this second one was just to do something), and I might be failing a course, would it be alright if I withdrew from it? Would the school care, since it's not a science course, and they know I won't be finishing this second undergrad?

I would contact the school if I were you. You wouldnt want to have your acceptance rescinded because of a failed/withdrawn course. The second bachelors degree probably made you look like a strong candidate, for them to find out that you failed a course might raise the question of if you just put that on your app as padding instead of genuine interest but if you have a good reason as to why youve done poorly that might help.

They're not going to care that you dropped a course if its not one of your prereqs and you've already been accepted....

Edit - I didn't read that second part.

Not finishing a degree that you stated on AMCAS that you intended to finish could have disastrous consequences. Call.

I didn't state on AMCAS that I was going to finish it; the part that asks when will this degree be expected, I said that it wasn't expected to be completed.

That's why I just want to withdraw lol! I'm still taking 4 other courses related to this second undergrad, it's just this one is hard to cope with since I've been missing a lot if class to travel to interviews

Then no worries. I deleted so there wasn't any confusion (it wasn't my best explanation). Withdraw that ****.

Current/future courses listed on AMCAS are not binding, and all adcoms are well aware of this. As long as its not a prereq they wont care.

Sorry, I also called the school and spoke with the secretary who said it was fine since I wasn't withdrawing from a prereq for the med school. But I'm still so skeptical lol!

Thank you very much! Should I update each school I applied to about my withdrawal or leave it, since I didn't tell them which courses I am currently taking.

Then you should be good! Don't stress if they said you're fine 🙂 Congrats on your acceptance!

Anyone else who submitted early September and still hasn't heard anything back?

I submitted 8/2 and am still MR. I feel like it's a silent rejection at this point.

dang it, I was hoping for at least an interview -- I grew up in this area and plan to work here after residency so it would have been nice

I just saw an option to submit supporting documentation on the portal. I've never seen this before and I was complete 9/20. I'm assuming everyone else sees it?

I saw that and used to that update them on a publication. It was weird bc when I called a few weeks ago, the receptionist said no updates, but that was before that new option

Yeah, that is weird. I sent an update on a publication as well - I hope it pushes us towards IIs!

It appeared on 11/4/2016 for me as well; I used it to push through an update on clinical leadership experience. I am wondering if it's turned on specifically for wait list/alternate list applicants, but carried over systematically for all applicants.

Whatever reason, here's hoping that it improves chances all around!

Does anyone know if they have interview dates posted?

I love a lot of what Wayne has to offer but I'd very much prefer a more block or systems based curriculum. So could you please speak to the new/revised curriculum that will be implemented for the next incoming class? Thanks in advance!

I thought I heard that they are starting a systems based curriculum next fall. I could be wrong. If anyone has anything about this please post it.

Wayne is switching to a systems-based curriculum for next year. Honestly, some material is more approachable by a systems approach and other material by a subject approach - not to mention each student learns differently. Curriculum changed for us and it is changing again for you guys. All it means is that some students will benefit and other students will just have to deal with it.

Just our of curiosity, does everyone have the "post admissions acceptance" row on their applicant portal? Under it, it says "Activate your WSU e-mail account / Login to Academica"

Yes. I'm pretty sure that row has been there since the start of our applications. It doesn't suggest that we have gotten admitted (already).

I thought so too but thought I would ask. I interviewed 10/17 and haven't heard back.

I feel you. I interviewed 10/24. If the rumors are correct, we wont hear back till after December 1st.

That's crazy. Lady at my interview said that the admissions committee met on nov. 4th so not sure why it takes a whole month to get the offers out

From what I've heard and seen on the rest of the thread, they met november 1st since decisions went out to some people on November 2nd. Unfortunately we missed the cut off to be considered in the that batch and now we must wait till December 1st.
