2017 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I certainly can't say I feel dramatically more confident after my first two interviews (DO). No decisions yet, so I'm just distracting myself with the rest of life, and anxiety over my next two MD interviews. I have one in state, then one OOS. I'd offer whatever it took for the OOS school to accept me, so I'm most nervous about that one. As in, super nervous. (Basically a perfect city for my SO to get a job, and there aren't many of those, and everyone wants to be in those cities for some reason...) Haha... Once I'm done with that interview, I'll be a mess, I'm sure. As a reapplicant (with no IIs last year), this is certainly a better year!

And ya, there are some mixed messages on the decision timeline. AAMC told schools not to release decisions on Saturday (per gonnif), but applicants have been told by schools that they can inform them as long as it's not in writing. In part I understand, since they get to make someone day, but it also feeds into the neurotisicm of this whole process. (Though as I said, that one school could ask me to run there for good news, and I would. 🙄)

I am having a hard time pulling the trigger on this DO deposit. Today is the last day and I hear back from my state MD school on monday

And if you look at the asterisk at the bottom of that, it says if the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, then it should be the following business day. Also, the aamc guy in charge of overseeing this stuff sent an email out to all md admissions offices to clarify, that this year it would be the 17th.
I stand corrected.

Bummer guys. Well, maybe it'll be midnight on Monday then. Either way, it's still pretty awesome to get that email. The only thing I remember about it was opening it up, and it said, among other things hyping up the school, "congratulations! You've just been accepted to one of America's best medical schools!" I was like, never mind "best". I just got my first acceptance, to any American medical school, anywhere! Booyah!

Ugh. That's a toughie. I'd need to put it down, you may feel more confident.

2 more rejections, Pre II
🙁
I'm sorry! As someone who had to reapply with no IIs, if you have that happen, you can still recover. (Not sure if you have an interview or not.) It's a long and torturous process though, for sure.

The only ones I'm thinking might go tomorrow are some of the TMDSAS schools. I asked at one interview and, while I'm not sure the admissions coordinator understood the reason for the question, was told they were planning to send OOS notices to some people on the 15th even though it was on a weekend. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if that was misinformation, though.

Also, this is possibly the worst week ever for my phone to turn into a (repairable) brick, and yet here we are. GoPhones are a lifesaver.

I ended up biting the bullet. Well I have the confirmed option to be a physician.

One interview so far. I thought it went well and I wasn't nervous. That is shocking, because I am a shy person. I was impressed with Fort Worth's botanical garden and I reached nirvana in about 5 minutes. The campus looked fun and an older student came up and introduced himself to me.
I want more interviews, but if I got accepted here without another II, then I would be perfectly happy. TCOM gave me such great vibes.

Woke up to check on some statuses today, not surprisingly no news yet. However, OHSU (top choice) has a lovely little warning that says their portal will be down for EIGHT HOURS starting at 8:30am on 10/17. Wow, talk about bad timing.

Hey at least you know thats 8 hours you wont have to obsessively check your portal....

All the schools I've been to have said the 15th is a guideline not set in stone. A few have said they'll come into work on the 15th and call. I'm not sure about 15th or 17th then, but sounds decisions are coming soon either way!

I saw that too and sad faced. Maybe they will call like UW does (wishful thinking)

Holy crap holy crap holy crap I got in somewhere! I got a midnight e-mail from one of my schools and I'm going to be a flipping doctor holy cow.

I started this whole process as a career changer four years ago and it seems like forever and yet no time at all and I'm going to get the chance to have those little M.D. initials by my name one day.

I still have to study for a test tomorrow but holy crap, you guys.

ETA: I just realized I have no idea what to do with this. I am waiting to hear back from other schools as well - if I accept the offer, that doesn't permanently bind me to it, right? I can accept it now but withdraw at a later date if I'm lucky enough to have multiple choices?

O3E pay w/8 years?
I was under the impression none of the programs give you the automatic 03 bump until after grad?

Today is going to be hard. Unfortunately, I Wasn't scheduled to work today. So I'm sitting at home, stressing myself out with refreshing SDN, my email, and school portals.

I need to get out of this house!

In 2008, the NDAA authorized save pay for USUHS and HPSP (base pay only). So at USUHS or during the 45 day ADT with HPSP, prior service are paid 2LT pay, or their previous base pay, whichever is higher.
Ah, I just saw ur profile. Thought you were prior enlisted. Didnt realize you were an officer.
Any idea if I were to do HPSP if I would get regular 01 pay or 01E pay for ADT? And if they would give me BAH during that since I have a family?

Congratulations to all those who got acceptances today. Best of luck to the rest. May this day bring you good news.

I will be on SDN all day today.

One rejection today (why send them out today of all days?) but I don't care because I got a couple more acceptances, including one from my top choices. Is today real?

me: I can't believe I made it through today without any rejec...

A huge CONGRATS to all of you with acceptances today! I guess my schools are all on the no-notification-on-the-17th bandwagon. Sigh. Guess it wasn't worth stressing all day!

USUHS! If I end up going there, I'll be paid about a $100K a year with everything else covered.
One of my closest college friends goes there and he absolutely loves it there and I bet you'll love it there too if you decide to attend there! Congrats!

No acceptances today (I've only completed one interview at a place that typically doesn't send acceptances until Thanksgiving-ish, so chances were slim to none lol), but I did get a II invite at EVMS! I wish I had checked my email sooner, ugh. You have to schedule by phone before 5 p.m. I saw the email at 5:43.

Heard from one school today. Not an acceptance or a rejection. Can't say I was not disappointed. The other two have been silent. I will not be expecting anything at this point in time today. Again, congratulations to those who got acceptances today and best of luck to those still waiting.

Same here. I've been holding out for a state school that I felt really good about during interview day.

But, congrats to everyone who received good news!

Gotta say, I'm a little disappointed in this crew. 🙁

Y'all are a bunch of slackers.

Nobody has started this year's acceptance thread yet!!

😛

See last years and get crackin'.

(I can start it, but I feel like it's more fun if one the current acceptees does it)

Fun fact: Last years nontrads had acceptances to something like 79 different MD and DO schools.
