*Note for USAJobs (courtesy of vegpsych) 11/13/2017: "OKAY- for all of us applying through the USA jobs application. I just spoke to someone on the phone and he said upload a copy of your AAPI, and they are aware that the categories of where we can attach files doesn't exactly match up well and they will check every document we upload regardless of what category we put it under. So that was a relief - basically just make sure you have your transcript, enrollment verification certificate, and a copy of the AAPI uploaded somewhere."

Y'all. Stop.

I got an email today in lab meeting, and when I glanced at my phone I saw the words "XX Hospital" and "invitation" and about fell out...before I realized it was just a networking invitation for a party at ABCT. I had to excuse myself from lab meeting for a solid 5 minutes to get it together.

Thanks! I'm trying to channel my inner warrior, Beyonce Pad Thai, throughout this process. Also, I wear lots of bright colors, don't always eat super healthy, and say "how DARE you?" all the time, so it seemed fitting.

edit: I also lay on the floor when I get overwhelmed, sooooo...there's that too.

Does anyone know if it would count against you if you opt for a Skype interview at a site where in-person is "preferred"? I'm specifically looking at VA sites, if that makes a difference. I know University Counseling Centers have already dropped the in-person interview to level the playing field for people who can't afford to travel to the average 5+ sites.

I'm child-focused, so I can't speak to VAs specifically. Our DCT told us to prioritize our top sites for in-person interviews and, if we have scheduling problems, ask about Skype interviews for the sites lower on our lists. When we asked if he thought sites would penalize us for Skype interviews, he didn't come out and say that it would definitely hurt us, but he did make the point that there are a lot of benefits of seeing the site and meeting the people in person - for both applicant and the interviewers. I imagine interviewing in person gives everyone all around more "data" to help make ranking decisions. So, maybe try to visit your top sites in person, and then ask about phone/Skype interviews for the lower sites?

Thank you! I have thought about this - however we won't receive interview invites all at once, so I might get a lower rank invitation early and have to decide then and there about paying for travel. This expense is no joke (*sigh*).

Yeah, the travel piece is definitely another layer of stress! Our DCT also suggested holding off on purchasing plane tickets immediately (if possible), particularly if we're still waiting for a top site, and to accept the interviews as they come and then cancel and ask for a Skype interview as needed. Of course that's easier said than done, particularly if one site interviews in early December and another in late January, but it might be another way to approach things.

I'm really morbidly curious to see how much I spend throughout this process. I'm tracking all internship-related expenses in a spreadsheet because when I asked people from my program last year, the responses ranged from $1,000 to $8,000 ( :bigtears::cyclops:) which wasn't super helpful when I was trying to budget for this year.

Right?!? Looking at airfares, hotels, and transportation, I am estimating up an over/under of $600 per site (*faint*)!!

I posted about this a few months ago, I think, but I was able to string together my interviews in two "waves" and it wasn't too bad. One thing I did that I highly recommend is making a calendar for December and January and listing all potential interviews days for each site. That allowed me to figure out which days were least likely to overlap and plan a little.

I also lumped interviews into two waves to make travel more manageable (and give myself a break) but still ended up spending most of January out of town. I ended up spending about 3k on flights, hotels, and rental cars. A few things that cut down on costs for me: I booked all of my flights at the same time and through the same airline- saved tons that way. I was also able to line up interviews regionally so that I wasn't flying 1000 miles one way just to go back 2 days later. I remember I had to change one interview to make it work and had a column on my spreadsheet with the region of each site and tried to line up region with interview dates before I heard back. But this meant spending at least 2 weekends at hotels and flying at weird times sometimes. Also, if the site was relatively close to the next... within 2-4 hours... I just drove... which wasn't totally fun for this west coaster (snow + ice).

Remember to leave plenty of time before the interview to sleep, shower, and eat. I made sure I was at my destination at least 12 hours before the interview start time.

Regarding Skype interviews... In person is always better but if the site offers it and it's low on your list then go for it.

This is really helpful information! I've also heard that the print-out calendar method is a helpful strategy. I'm curious, how many of your sites had their interview dates posted ahead of time? 5 (out of my 18) don't have dates posted which makes it hard to plan ahead. Also, about when did you purchase all of your plane tickets?

I have a print out of calendars for December and January with all of the potential interview dates for the sites that have them posted already. Its color coded by level of importance (ranking) and type of site.
Question: Have others found that University Counseling Centers only offer SKYPE interviews? All of mine list that as the only option.

A few tips: Yes, having all potential interview dates on a calendar at the ready is a good idea. For travel, utilize your networks. Find people to crash with in the cities where you interview. Old college acquaintances, friends of friends, distant relatives... I put the word out on facebook that I was looking for places to stay in various cities and wasn't disappointed (tips: make sure you travel with ear plugs, eye mask, and caffeine of some sort in case you're sleeping in a place where those are needed). Also can share hotel rooms with other students (or even find folks on SDN to split with!) Take snacks, to save on breakfast/afternoon munchies. Try to schedule regionally (though this didn't quite work out for me, but I tried). Look into taking the train (or even megabus if you're super frugal) if you're in places where you can do that. If you haven't used lyft or uber before, I think you can get a code for a free ride for the first trip. My biggest savings was by staying with people instead of over the hotel - although I did have one night in a hotel alone, not splitting with anyone, and it was magical. I slept like a rock and it was so nice to have some true alone time in the midst of everything. If you have a credit card that you earn points on, don't forget you can sometimes use that to get a free flight / hotel night or two (e.g., I have bank of america credit card and find using their point system so onerous and confusing that I never use it. So by the time internship came around, I had enough for some freebies). If you are APA or AAA member etc., remember to ask hotels/car rentals if they have discounts. Prioritize your top sites for in-person interviews. That definitely affected my rankings in surprising ways.

Like sing said, this can be done frugally. I did 8 interviews for <2k. luckily two regions stacked up nicely so I didn't have to go back and forth. One region was driveable. A couple interviews coincided with a classmate so we could split lodging costs, and a couple more were where I had a friend/family member living so lodging cost was 0. Also, in the Northeast, I used public transpo/trains. Saved a ton of money there.

Thanks to all for the tips and tricks! It's really helpful to have feedback from others who have successfully navigated this process. It's also nice to have the reassurance that yes, this process is stressful AND you can get through it with your sanity!

Also, got a call today from a number I didn't recognize and immediately answered all enthusiastically and professionally....and it was just someone from healthcare.gov reminding me that it's open enrollment and to pick a new health insurance plan. :yeahright:

Hi slaney -- all my sites had their dates posted either on their websites/brochures or in their APPIC directory listing. If flying Southwest, I bought flights right away, but I think I held off until early December to buy most of them.

Hi,
I received an evite from one of the sites I applied to xXxX hospital, to join an alumni reception meet at the ABCT conference in San Diego . does that mean they shortlisted me? or they invited every applicant?

As much as I'd like to hope so, I don't think it means anything. From what I hear, they host this party every year.

Slaney, you just shattered my dreams..lol..i was so excited to be invited...but if you think about it it's not like they invite all the applicants that applied, i feel they invite a few shortlisted applicants. let's wait.
By the way are you coming for the reception? hope to see u there.

Hahah, I'm sorry! As much as I want to hold out hope, I'm still skeptical... If you think about it, their application was just due today and that invite went out last week. I'm also acutely aware of trying to not get my hopes up, particularly for this site. So who knows at this point.

I won't be at ABCT, but I hope you have fun!! :)

I don't think it definitely counts against you, although I agree with other poster's points about how it's nice to see the place in person, get a good feel for it, etc. - this is hard to do on Skype (e.g., you won't have any lunches with interns to chitchat). I've seen Skype interviews make someone look better than I think they would have in person (you can hide negative quirks in quick Skype interviews that lack informal time with interviewers and current interns) but also seen some stronger candidates be hindered by Skype (your personality and enthusiasm may not shine as much through a screen as it would in person)... so part of this is knowing yourself and knowing how to come across on Skype in a way that enhances your best features.

I've been trying to hold it together but can I join those of you who are rocking in a corner? There aren't enough distractions in the world. I'm sitting in the lab right now and watching Frasier, which is typically a warm blanket type of show for me but nothing is working.

What is everyone else doing?

But really. At this point, I am equal parts dry shampoo and double stuffed Oreos.

Edit: to be clear, I’m not eating dry shampoo. I’m just too stressed to bother with actually washing my hair.

That's why my avatar is Angelica Pickles dumping cookies into her mouth. I relate to her on the deepest level. Last night I got home and looked around my mess of a room and I was like this is a physical manifestation of the internship process.
