It’s that simple.
While a likely factor, care to provide some objective evidence as to how that one conjecture explains all of the trends with the psych data? If it were that simple, the interview season would’ve gone much differently for myself and classmates applying psych last year.

I've said this before but I really wish the ERAS would just give us the data in a spreadsheet so we can parse through it ourselves. I just wish I could clean the data of people who ranked 3 or less programs, who had red flags on their app, etc., to obtain a more accurate picture of what we need to aim for to get into a specific residency.

Another interesting data point is IMGs and FMGs

They matched with lower Step scores compared to US counterparts. This could be interpreted along the same lines that US grads were applying to programs in desirable locations without an idea about their own competitiveness especially grads with <220. Or IMGS and FMGs have some holistic quality to them that psych programs perfer which seems kinda outlandish.
In the case of matched IMG/FMG applicants, their step1/2 scores are usually lower, It's not only case for psych...

Psych is becoming more competitive because it's attracting more US students due to better compensation and lifestyle.... Step1/2 is creeping up a bit while they have not changed that much for other specialties in the last 2 years except gen surgery from a quick glance at this charting the outcomes.
