MD & DO 2019 Match Lists

No ortho???

I got this from their match list search for 2019. I don't know where @ThatOneAnon found that list but it is 100x better organized than the one they put out that is organized by name on their website. I think all they are missing is ortho.

I know at Harvard and at UCSF, medical students can choose not to be included in the match list publication. I’m assuming other medical schools give their students this option as well. I would consider that factor when evaluating match lists as well...

For UCSF, I think you’re still included in the generic “how many matched each specialty” list they release, but will be removed from the hard-copy list that has names/programs. I was confused about why a certain specialty’s numbers didn’t add up between the two until I remembered it was optional. Lists that don’t list people by name are probably less likely to do this in general, I’d imagine.

Evaluating match lists as premeds is still a pointless endeavor, though, for reasons pointed out already.

Super random, but is University of Washington a top tier/prestigious program?

Yes, definitely. But also a strongly mission-based school so unless you share the school’s mission the match list will probably not mean much to you. On the MSTP side their grads match as well as any other T20 program.

Michigan match list is missing Urology matches too.

How the mighty have fallen

No dude. There is a Tulane and Kaiser Urology match missing from that list. That is not the full Umich match list.

Corrected.

Also missing an ortho to St. Mary’s

This is missing an IR to MGH.

Harvard is also missing a second OB/Gyn match to Brigham & Womens.

Yes. Derm is their #2 specialty after IM. And their IM matches are probably as competitive as many derm programs.

The majority of the graduating class took at least one extra year for research (or other pursuits).

Doing only a prelim year will get you licensed to practice medicine, but you would not be board certified in any specialty.

This is true for the majority of states, but definitely not all. One year of GME is required for U.S. MD's in 36 of 52 jurisdictions (including DC & PR); however, 13 states require two years GME, 2 states require 3 years GME and one state (SD) requires completion of a residency program. For DO's it's a little better as for some reason ME, PA and WA believe "bone wizards" only require one year of GME while MD's require two years! It should also be noted that many states require extra years for IMG's.

As a DO student, I have never heard of the “bone wizard joke.” I think this is a hilarious and it put a smile on my face. Thank you! Instead of a DO, it will be a BW from now on.

Cannot stress this enough. Even in fields like Urology, the top 10 are not what you might expect (Harvard/Pen/Yale aren't there for example)

Good point. For instance, Iowa, Miami, and Thomas Jefferson are probably the top 3 programs in ophthalmology. You would never know that by name of institution.

Super random, but is University of Washington a top tier/prestigious program?
Depends on the specialty. In ophthalmology, it’s not considered top by any means. It’s probably mid-tier but def solid improvements in the last 3-4 years. In other specialties like IM, peds, ortho, etc. UW is generally considered a top 10 program.

Anyone have Duke?

@MC_Infarction Could you please share Duke’s match list when you get a chance? Asking for a prospective student (my baby cousin)!
Below is Duke's list. A quick opinion that I wanted to share - I think a match list is one of the poorer proxies for how you choose a med school. So many things go into how people rank programs other than just sheer reputation/ranking.

Does anyone with more experience have any insight on the Sinai match list? How good it is, is it what you would expect?
How can anyone expect anything from any match list? The match process is very individualized, and there's nothing to get out of it except maybe possible connections to some programs you might be interested in. Different classes = Different people = Different interests = Different match list every year.

I can comment overall that medicine is quite good but not totally star studded (see: Stanford). All 4 Neurology matches are very strong. Peds is overall quite strong as well.

Huge grain of salt, self-selection and personal fit (however that may be defined by any individual person) play an enormous part in this process, so again, interpreting a single match list is like trying to read tea leaves.

EM is very good. OBGYN is very good.
Yep, like Iowa optho mentioned earlier, Cook County in Chicago is another one of those classic "most people outside of the field probably think it's a bad match but it's actually a phenomenal match"
