2019 NRMP Match Report

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anybody aware of any significant changes from last year that would be good to know for somebody who is ignorant of the match process?

When does the "charting outcomes" one come out?

Am I interpreting the numbers wrong, or was DR a blood bath this year?

925 US seniors applied to PGY-2 spots, only 665 US seniors matched... Yet 30% of DR programs filled with non-USMD's? Seems bizarre.

There were ~150 IR spots offered, maybe that throws off the numbers since almost everyone applying IR would have also applied DR?

Kind of seems like a lot of specialties had significantly lower match rates for USMD's than we've seen in the past, unless I'm an idiot and can't math:

Anesthesia had 907 USMD matches / 1270 applicants = 71%...

yeah, it seems like it. Im not sure if that includes people dual applying who matched into other specialties first. Considering the 2018 data has a similar story, but the charting outcomes paints a different picture.

Same for general surg

If you look at the grand total on the bottom it becomes apparent that they are counting people who dual applied twice, so it makes sense considering Gen surg and Anasthesia are popular back-up specialties.

Also goes to show how much self selection plays a role here. Nsg and Ortho have decent match rates while DR is abysmal

The DR match rate is depressed because nearly everyone who hopes to match to integrated IR also applies to DR programs as a backup. Also nearly everyone who applies to the PGY-1 (categorical) DR programs also apply to the main group of PGY-2 DR programs.

So do you think that has a significant effect on the people just hoping to match DR? That's something that I've been wondering ever since IR became stupidly competitive.

Hard to tell. Need to look at the next Charting Outcomes. It would help to see what proportion of applicants for a given preferred specialty match to each rank on their list (1, 2, 3, 4 or more), but NRMP does not provide this specialty-specific data like it does for the fellowship match. You could ask them.

Rad Onc was very surprising this year given how competitive it usually is but 20+ unfilled spots.. wow. Yeah job market..

I know Ophthalmology (never on NRMP since its via SF Match) was a bloodbath this year as well (and well I guess most years). 0 unfilled spots and overall very low match rate with 94/95% of matched applicants USMDs.

Same with ENT, crazy competitive this year with 0 unfilled spots.

Derm interestingly had 3 unfilled spots.

You are interpreting these wrong. This chart is not great for seeing how competitive everything is, because this includes ALL applications, and many people apply to multiple specialties. DR is not competitive at all, and you can see this from the past few years of charting outcomes data.
