2019 Pharmacist Salaries

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I actually timed my dentist last time I was in - he spent less than 1 minute looking at my teeth (two commercials on the TV) - he was in and out of the room in 3 minutes. I am not complaining, I had no issues, the hygienist did a great job I feel. Just made me think how profitable it can be if done right, although I never really considered being a dentist, it was about the only healthcare professional I didn't consider!

Yeah its a pretty good gig, but it has its problems currently. Some dental schools cost 500k+....to buy a decent practice can cost 500k to 1 mil....so thats a big big big hole of debt to start out with. In addition- insurance companies are squeezing dentists...lower and lower reimbursements.

But if you have a good practice, its very very very good gig. But if you are just mediocre/work for someone...the job sucks.

Just my 2 cents.

I’m a 2019 pharmacist and I’m making a lot of freaking money. And I got laid off once this year - which ended up working out in my favor

Pls do share more!

Honestly, out of my 8 hour work day.... I'm actually drilling/filling hunched over maybe 2-3 hours. Alot of things are delegated to staff to do. The other times I'm just checking hygiene checks which takes 2-3 min of my time and mostly is socialization.

So what do I do in my free time in the office? Lots of tvs, books, and watching CNBC marketwatch stuff...

But your "work" also involves fronting the office expenses, building a patient population, and doing risk management, it's just on a different timescale than your operational day-to-day duties. All of which are capital work activities, but they are all still work. Pharmacy does not have that avenue outside proprietorship and has a more developed corporate world than dentistry (not that entities like Aspen and Dental Practice Solutions aren't trying with their franchising model).

Graduated in 2017 and started as a staff pharmacist at a 400+ bed hospital in South Carolina at 104k salaried. Moved back to my hometown in Virginia. 118K at a mid sized hospital and dirt cheap cost of living.

That’s a good deal.

Fantastic

Owning a home is not expensive. 40-50k is enough to buy a small home with a low property tax. I found apartments much cheaper overseas if I want to stay there but I am currently living close to my family so I don't know what I want to do for my future. I was retired but I went back to work because I wanted to stay close to my family and because I got bored watching movies and playing video games everyday lol.

Sure, I've heard about 50k houses. I live in a very low cost of living state in BFE and that kind of house is found in the ghetto. You'll get robbed if people know you are a pharmacist. They will take every decent thing you own. Simply living that cheap isn't an option unless you enjoy being a victim. A 120k-175k house would be your best bet as those tend to be more middle-class neighborhoods. Your neighbors might be nurses, cops, military personnel, etc.

Not having children or at the very least a spouse seems like a waste of your life. You can't have any of that living in a trailer.

So you as a couple could be in a half a million dollars of debt? Sweet Martha. Can you pay that debt on 1.5 salaries? 1 salary? Can you relocate? Can you sock anything away for a house, a retirement fund, kids?

Well, thank God for IBR at least. I've noticed a lot of people are not retiring these days. It's becoming more of a norm to work until you literally drop dead! I refuse to pay a cent more than I have to for my loans. I am not living in poverty just because I chose to better myself through education. That is ridiculous.

I live in Michigan and the houses in the ghetto cost $4,000 for 3-4 bedrooms with land. There are small houses for $50k around here for 1-2 beds in nice neighborhoods but I seen very high prices in other states compared to Michigan. I lived in Flint, MI for many years and we owned a rental that cost 5k for 4 beds but we never got robbed lol. We didn't live in the rental we were living in a mobile home lot but now we own a big house worth 300k. I guess you get lucky sometimes.

Flint, MI, the place that had a national major water crisis with lead in its water? No wonder it's so cheap.

Oh yeah, lol. I was using a water filter in my shower and drinking bottled water.
