Hello,

I just got accepted to the 2020-21 UC SMP class, so I figured I would start the new thread. This program has a great statistics and I'm excited to use all the tools that it has to better my application. I am a high MCAT low GPA non-traditional applicant that will be applying for the second time after this program. If anyone else has been accepted and wants to talk about the program or Cincinnati in general feel free to PM me.

Thanks for starting this thread. I will be applying as soon as I finish my PS. What are your stats if you don’t mind me asking?

When did you submit your app? And did they ask for an updated transcript? I'm still waiting to hear back on my app and its been almost 2 months total.

I heard back in mid January, I'm a nontraditional candidate so they did not ask for updated transcripts. Hang in there, they probably review the applications in waves.

Hi! I'm in the current med school cycle and not too hopeful this late in the game and considering SMPs and had a few questions:

-Do students in this program usually have a high GPA before they start? I've heard SMPs are more for high MCAT/low GPA candidates--are there some who are more in the middle range for both?
-When people say they are applying to med school "during" the SMP, have they already sent in their primary/secondary apps before the start of the program? Or does it mean they apply right after they finish it (& thus taking a gap year)?

They have already sent in primary apps (and it is highly suggested that they have finished all secondaries before the start of the SMP too), if they want to apply during the SMP

Does anyone know how people who apply to med school the same year are evaluated at UCCOM? Ik the guaranteed interview is for those who graduate from the program.. I was trying to avoid a glide year if I could

I was also accepted! They told me yesterday 2/19. I was complete 2/6. Stoked between this program and another I was accepted too. But I will probably be choosing this one. I will be probably be looking for roommates or housemates in the future once housing starts to really cross my mind. If anyone is interested feel free to PM me

Congrats! Did you receive a email stating your app was complete?

No, I think I submitted everything on 2/1. On the portal it showed everything as received by 2/6. There was no specific complete email

Edit: I was wrong I received a complete email on 2/7.

Did you guys get a formal confirmation that your application is complete? And how long did it take to hear back?

Hi, I was accepted to this program recently and I did get a formal confirmation that my application was complete. I submitted everything on January 11, got the email saying my app was complete on January 17, and received my offer of admission on February 19.

Hey All, I applied March 5th, received a complete email March 12th... so now I am just waiting for a response. I’m a non-traditional applicant and I hope to have the opportunity to be part of this program. Best of luck to you all!

Hey, guys, I got into this program as well today! Can anyone speak about its merits and downfalls? As well as perhaps how many people get accepted/rejected? Just trying to gauge how competitive this program is

I am not sure how many people get into med school the same cycle as when they enter the masters. I know the guaranteed interview is for the following cycle so if anyone can speak to this that would be great!

Sorry I can’t answer your question, but I’m curious when you applied? Thanks!

Hey guys just looking for opinions if I would be competitive for this program. My MCAT is definitely weak (501). My sGPA is 3.35 and cGPA is 3.4. I have about 2000 healthcare experience hours split between paid and volunteer. Do you think I have a shot?

I applied kind of late. Mid-February I believe.

On a side note - I'm looking for a female roommate for this year so HMU 🙂

I personally think you should apply. I'd recommend trying to get another MCAT in before the program starts, since I don't think there will be much time to dedicate to MCAT studying during the program. Your GPAs are higher than mine and I was accepted, but I'm not sure how they weigh the MCAT.
Good luck!!

Hey so my MCAT score is around yours and I have a slightly higher GPA. I haven’t hear back so I’m not sure if you are competitive or not. Once I hear back I will let you know, but I still don’t think it hurts to apply. Best of luck!

Thank you I would really appreciate that. When did you apply?

I think my application was completed sometime in December. I had to send an updated transcript after Fall semester so I think that's what took so long for them to send the acceptance.

Can I ask what your MCAT that you applied with was? I know the averages are available but just trying to get an idea if there are any outliers

I applied with a 512. To your other question, I thought the video essay was a good and easy way to show your interest and that you can think on your feet.

Hi everyone. I got my acceptance this past Friday and I'm super excited about the opportunity. Does anyone know how the grading works for this program? Like are students' grades determined based on a curve of the med school averages and are students within the SMP graded on a curve against eachother?

Recent SMP alum here. For basically all of the classes, there is no curve. Grading is percentage-based with predetermined cutoffs (here's one class' scale from the program's website). SMP students aren't competing against each other for a limited number of A's. Rather, they're looking to run up the score, earn a solid GPA, and do as well as possible compared to the M1 average.

Were there any SMP students who performed better than the M1 average?

Yup. Plenty. Remember that most SMP students are here due to low GPAs. Proving that you can outperform the typical M1 at well-ranked school like Cincinnati is the ultimate trump card for your med school apps. It won't be easy though, so be prepared to do whatever it takes to excel.

Is anyone on here looking for a roommate for the school year? I was going to start looking into off campus apartments and figured I'd ask here since they haven't released the FB group yet.

I PMed you!

Did the students work together with each other, faculty, and alumni to help polish their application and personal statements? Or were the students too busy with school work and kind of fending for themselves as far as polishing their application?

Just accepted this morning! Could anyone speak to MD matriculation directly after the program (without taking a gap year)?

There's a real camaraderie in the program, and you'll definitely get help from faculty and former SMP students. When I was in the SMP, my classmates and I proofred each others' essays, shared interviewing tips, and MCAT help (for those taking it right after the program).

It's certainly doable if you've got a reasonably competitive app right now. Several of my classmates were able to score interview invites on their own very early in the program (including to non-Cincinnati schools), and good SMP grade updates through the first semester may have helped push them to an acceptance.

Hey guys, recently accepted student here. Just wanted to see what people were thinking for housing? I'm starting to look at apartments and wanted to get a feel for where everyone else was looking. Either way, looking forward to starting with you all!

There is a facebook page which some of the accepted students have been using to coordinate housing. Let me know if you havent been invited into the fb page yet

No invite to the fb group yet (assuming it'll be coming soon), just an email from Emma with details on financial aid, etc., and promising further info "closer to the start of the program"

You should email Emma with your email address for Facebook so she can add you to the group. She has sent out a couple of announcements on there already.

Hey all! Just got into this program recently! Does anyone know if the program is online or in person due to COVID? Also, is our best bet for the facebook group to email Emma?

As of right now, we are required to be in Cincinnati and they are planning on having a hybrid system in place. Best bet is to email Emma
