Hello,

I was just wondering what track I should follow to be in the 2020 cycle for medschool. I am unsure of when to take my mcat, and when to apply. Can someone inform me on when to apply? Thanks!

In my opinion, you should try to have your primary AMCAS application in as soon as it can be accepted.... Usually June 1. Look to take the AMCAS in April or May

It all depends on how good you planned for that cycle.

I’m applying 2020 cycle as well, for instance: I’m currently creating my PS rough draft now and finishing up some prerequisites in my DIY post bac. I’ll be taking my MCAT April 2020, to be ready to apply that summer. Given the fact I get the score I want that is.

You have to plan now so that you know what you have to do to be a successful applicant.

The timeline I followed to be ready 100% by day 1 (which is when you submit if your transcripts will be ready by then, June 1st).

1. First ps draft in January and send out to your readers for critique. Make a school list, preliminary, and rework it up until submission day.
2. Activities hours/contacts/descriptions, preliminary after PS ready
3. Open up Interfolio acct and Ask for letters March through April
4. App opens in May. Order transcripts (if they are ready, trads might have to wait) AS SOON as Amcas opens to avoid problems. Order one for yourself to fill in AMCAS.
5. Work on AMcAS periodically up to last week of May.
6. Spend the last week of May revising AMCAS. Print it out. Red pen. Line by line. No typos or errors. No unnecessary words. One coherent narrative through the whole app tied together by most meaningful, letters, activities and PS.
7. Submit day 1
8. Prewrite secondaries in June.
9. All secondaries done by first week of August.
10. Profit

On addition to Lucca's timeline, I would find out if your school has requirements for a committee letter. At my school, they had deadlines for letters, the advisory group did interviews, etc.

AMCAS opens for editing May 1st. You have all of May to write it. Use a letter service like Interfolio to hold all of your letters. Then, once your letters are in Interfolio, the service sends them directly to AMCAS.

Some schools have their own letter storage service. Check your premed advising webpage or call them, in case it's cheaper. (Interfolio doesn't charge for storage, only for sending them out, which is a one-year subscription fee for I think $49 or so.)

I’m applying 2020 cycle as well, for instance: I’ll be taking my MCAT April 2020, to be ready to apply that summer.

Just to be sure we're all on the same page, the 2020 application cycle starts June of 2019, 9 months from now. We are currently in the 2019 cycle.

I am unsure of when to take my mcat

Take the MCAT after you complete the prerequisites, have had some months of dedicated study time, and have repeatedly scored in your target range on practice tests. January through May before you want to apply is a good time.
