2024-2025 UC Davis Secondary Essay Prompts

1. Discuss any elements of your application that you feel might be concerning to the Admissions Committee (This could include explanation of metric trends, institutional actions, legal violations, etc.) Please enter N/A if no concerns to report. (500 Characters)

2. Do you have a connection to Northern or Central California? If yes, explain. (500 Characters)

3. Please list the activities you would like to be considered in your application to UC Davis. The secondary activities may be used to highlight your experiences specifically relevant for UC Davis. You may use your most meaningful experiences listed in your initial AMCAS application or select/add others that may be relevant to UC Davis. Please only list three. The admissions committee will review all AMCAS application activities as well; this an opportunity to highlight your most meaningful and/or relevant to UC Davis School of Medicine. Please list your actual hours completed at the time of your secondary submission, not projected commitment. Therefore, enter your secondary application submission date as your end date for activities still in progress. (3 activities can be listed,
500 Characters for each)

Good luck to all applying!

I'm a bit confused about the course requirements. My university only offers 1 gen chem course for 4 credits, one semester, so should I just put that in? And then put orgo 1 or biochem as part of gen chem?

are the prompt same as last year? can someone post those here please?

Does anybody know if they manually go through to check off your prerequisites before marking you complete? Have everything in but still marked as incomplete after secondary submission

My general and organic chemistry courses without their labs are each 3 units. Am I supposed to include my labs to fulfill units?

Honk honk, I'm a clown. They require one year of the subjects or 8 units total.

For the first optional prompt, I was wondering if I should mention the two C+'s in math classes I got in my first year and the W I got in my senior year. I did learn a lot overcoming these challenges, but I've read somewhere about not bringing attention to those sorts of things?

EDIT: For some context on the W, I got sick with COVID-19 leading up to the midterm and the professor did not give me an extension, so I put my best foot forward and failed the midterm. The midterm and the final were the only grades in the class, and given what I got on the midterm, there was no way I would have passed the class even if I aced the final, so I took the W.

Does anyone else have it on their application portal where it shows everything as checkmarked and says the application is complete but never got a application complete confirmation email? Sorry I know this is kind of neurotic but I submitted Day 1 and I know sometimes there's system errors on the 1st day and just wanted to make sure my application isn't falling through the cracks

If it would make you feel better I’m sure you could email them just to double check

IS SoCal Secondary received today

Last edited:
I received a secondary from UCD SOM, but I'm from SoCal (Los Angeles), and I've never been to NorCal except for SF/Berkeley. I am slightly confused since I've heard that they want people from Northern/Central California. I literally have zero ties, so what do I write for the secondaries lol

Just finished a webinar with uc Davis. They said that they plan to start sending out II invites starting in late July

Also that if you are a reapplicant and took preview last cycle, you don’t have to take it again. Which is cool

Super neurotic, but do you all see your paragraphs for the 3 activities after submitting them?

Mine shows all the fields except the written part

For which question?

Nah submitted like yesterday and I thunk it's like that for everyone where you can't see the written part. Think they do it that way so they don't get people calling and asking if they can correct typos and stuff after they submit lol

still haven't received secondary. should i be concerned? Verified on 5/31 with 90% MCAT and 3.7 GPA.
They are pretty much the only school that pre-screens before sending out secondaries (only send like 50% of applicants secondaries). Anecdotal but I had a buddy that was 4.0 and 99th percentile MCAT and they never sent him a secondary. Where are you from? They really like central and northern California applicants....

Not true at all. Pretty much all the UCs screen, tho I'm not sure how strict UCSD screens. Also, that 50% is taken from UCI. I don't think any UCs give an estimate of how many applicants apply vs how many get secondaries.

Can I consider being from the bay area as Northern California?

I was at a uc Davis info session last week and they said last year they got 8700 primary apps and sent out only 3500 secondaries.

When were you verified? I was also verified on 6/1 so that could be playing into it as well
6/3, so it's not looking great. Did you get any kind of confirmation when they received your primary application? or just the secondary application?

Nah I didn't get a primary app confirmation. Just a secondary invitation

Hi everyone! For the first optional discussing elements of my application that may be concerning the Admission Committee, should I write about how my MCAT score is on the lower end as I had to work full-time in order to fund myself and my cycle (I do not receive support from my parents)? Or would it be best to just leave that question blank? Thanks!

I honestly doubt there's any reason or excuse, however sincere or circumstantial, they haven't heard before. But it doesn't hurt to put it if you want since they can verify with your contact you were working full-time. I don't know if it'll help or not. I'm just stating the facts to help you better decide.

Thank you so much!!

Is anyone using the "Most Meaningful" section as more of a "why Davis" section? like highlighting activities and then briefly explaining why they align w/ UC Davis's mission?

Yes, this is what I'm doing. So hard w the max character though!

How much do you think timing takes into account for secondaries? I was verified 5/30 and I haven’t gotten anything. Bit worried now.
