2025-2026 UNLV Secondary Essay Prompts (same as last year)

#1 - Required: Why are you interested in the Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV and how does your background and future goals contribute to our mission? (500 words)

#2 - Required: Briefly discuss how you envision yourself contributing to the care of our growing and diverse population in the state of Nevada. (500 words)

#3 - Required: Briefly discuss how you define professionalism and how you will demonstrate professionalism in the classroom at the Kerkorian School of Medicine and in clinical training settings in our valley. (500 words)

#4 - Required: Provide a BRIEF chronological list of your time since graduating from high school up to the point of applying to medical school. Do not write in essay form here. This should simply be a list by years. (250 words)

#5 - Optional: Applicants who are Nevada Connection are strongly encouraged to share more about their tie to Nevada in this essay. Nevada residents or applicants who are out of state (western region) with no tie to Nevada may also use this box to elaborate on their commitment to Nevada, per our mission, if they would like.
(250 words)

#6 - Optional: Applicants are welcome to share with the Admissions Committee any disruptions or impacts to your application components, the application process, and/or your personal life that may be relevant to your holistic profile. Please also use this area to present any information related to academic and/or MCAT performance that requires further information. (250 words)

#7 - Optional: If you have any other information you believe is important for the Admissions Committee to consider, please include it here. Do not restate information already in your primary AMCAS application. (250 words)

For individuals who are reapplicants you will also have an additional question appear in #7 due to conditional logic that is:

"If you are a reapplicant to UNLV KSOM, please include your changes/improvements since your last application."

****It's helpful to know which OOS applicants will be considered for admission at UNLV:****
"Admissions review does consider Western-region applicants in our out-of-state category. These states include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, and Washington.
Non-Western region applicants with no qualifying connection to Nevada currently do not advance to secondary in our process."

Good luck to all applying!

Hello Everyone and Welcome to the 2025-2026 AMCAS cycle. We're very excited to start another great admissions season. Schools were able to download recently and by the end of the week our application software will start doing invitations to secondary for those who qualify. For details on any portion of our process, please don't hesitate to visit our Applicants website. We look forward to providing insights and resources here and you are welcome (and encouraged) to also email us when you do have additional questions at [email protected]

If I got an email letting me know my app was received but I haven’t gotten secondaries should I reach out? Or how long do I wait before I reach out?

Is mcat cutoff true?
Your MCAT cannot be more than 3 years old at the time of application (so for 2025-2026 AMCAS cycle we will take an MCAT from May 2022 or later). You also have to have an MCAT taken by October 1, 2025 which is our application deadline.

To get an invitation to secondary you must have a qualifying MCAT, GPA/BCPM GPA, and Nevada residency, Nevada Connection, or Western Region status. If you have an adverse action that does require a review by our team prior to being moved forward. Similarly, if you don't have a qualifying GPA, a team member will look at your file for appropriate post-bacc or graduate work to pass you through.

If you have a Nevada Connection you've had to report to us via email (per the instructions in the AMCAS confirmation email) it may also take a moment to get your file updated. We're very busy with the start of the cycle and processing as quickly as we can.

If you think you should have gotten an invitation to secondary, you're welcome to email us at [email protected] and we can look at your file specifically.

Is it recommended to fill out the optional essay if there is nothing else to add? Does it count against you to not answer it, possibly indicating less interest?

No, if you truly don't have anything additional to share, it's not a problem. (It really is optional.)

@UNLV Admin 2 for the secondary, are the only classes you require us to submit listed on the application? Specifically, is it just the three biology courses, one biochem, and one behavioral sciences? I am just a little unclear if other classes like physics, ochem, or math also need to be listed. Thank you!

Correct - we only need to know what courses you feel fulfill our pre-req list (3 biol/1 with lab; 1 biochemistry; 1 behavorial science).

What is the accepted appropriate abbreviation for Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV to use when writing secondaries and trying to save words?

@UNLV Admin 2 if I got an MCAT score less than 500, would I be sent a message saying I was not sent a secondary for this?
Hello - at this time, we do not have an auto email that notifies candidates of ineligibility to go to secondary. In the case of MCAT being below 499, we allow the application to be set aside in case a new MCAT score comes in that would make it eligible. You are allowed to take the MCAT up until our application deadline of October 1st. Shortly thereafter, if you do not have a qualifying MCAT, then you would see a final rejection notice in January when we notify all applicants who are not moving forward in the cycle.
