It is -24 degrees this morning in Minneapolis!!!! Almost half of my coworkers aren't even at the office yet because they can't get their cars started.

I do have to admit this post is part of my plan to scare away the competition at my #1 choice (Mayo). ;-)
Seriously though, I love MN and the cold and snow, but today is friggin cold!!!

Not to mention the windchill, which is -43 degrees!!!

Holy Crap! how can you live in that?!?!?

Lots of layers!!!

I also tend to wait to do errands like buying groceries, etc. for a few days until it gets warmer... like 10 degrees

This is very sad... it's -43F right now with wind chills and I was having trouble breathing getting out of my car and into the building.

And my car just barely started today..... it almost gave up....... so many weird things were happening to my car that I was almost afraid to drive to work... and i have an all new 04 from Audi!!!!! This is sad......... very sad.... i gotta move down south~ I've had ENUFF!!!!

MDT,

do you go to Medtronic????

I PM'ed you.

I replied to your PM.

How can you live in that kind of weather. In philly we complain when it hits +24 degrees. I love the cold weather, but that seems to be a bit extreme.

we have tunnels and skyway (no joke)

WoW! And I thought we had it bad, here in Chicago with a temp of -10 and windchill of -30. Aye Caramba.😱

my prayer must be working!!!! It's now only -33F with wind chills!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just another reason I will always be a Cali girl 🙂

BTW, you think that's bad, the other day I called my sister and she said it was -60. Guess where she lives.

And I thought we had it bad in Philly. I need to call my friend in Minneapolis and make sure he is still alive.

Don't you guys plug in your cars? In Alaska we have battery blankets to make sure that the cars start in the morning. Some people even have oil pan heaters and heaters that circulate warm water through the pipes. We never have problems starting the car, but it takes for-freakin'-ever to get the cab warm at -40!

wow! that is uninmaginably cold
😱
its 65 degrees here where i live!

Some people plug in their cars, but I'm sure it is not as common a practice as in Alaska. It is quite a bit colder than our normal temps for this time a year, so I think most people just try to tough it out when it gets this cold.

However, it was cold enough this morning that they had to delay the opening of St. Paul's Winter Carnival ICE PALACE until noon.

It's in the 60's here, too. Including wind-chill, that's a 110 degree swing😛 .
So . . . when it's that cold outside, is it physically possible to pee in the woods? Somebody try it and tell me how it goes.

-60???? That's a whole different kind of cold.................... 😱

For all you bona fide Minnesotans what are the must haves so my bones do not freeze and I can get the car going? from my understanding Mayo does not close very often so I need to be prepared...

Yeah this morning, I had to walk 50 yards to my morning class, and i swore i got frostbite. It burned to breathe it was so cold.

The best thing you can do for your car is to be able to park it inside of a garage at night. Engine block heaters work well, but you have to be able to plug it in, and most parking lots, including those at apartments, do not have a place to plug it in. Other things you can do is make sure you always have at least 1/4 tank of gas, letting it get down too low will make it easier for the gas lines to freeze. You can also add HEET (Isopropyl alcohol) additive to your gas when you fill up to keep the gas lines from freezing when it gets this cold.

Rochester does have a public bus system, so if your car isn't starting you could take the bus. Also, most of their buildings are connected by tunnels so you won't have to go outside much once you get there.

Essential clothing items: hat, mittens, scarf, and a parka-like jacket. A dressy wool coat looks nice and works most of the year, but isn't going to cut it on a day like today. I wouldn't worry about buying new winter clothes until next fall. Your future classmates who grew-up in this weather could help you out and I would guess what is available in TN is different than MN.

Well, we are for sure planning on buying a house with two/three car garage and the car will be inside. I do not mind taking the bus at all and that may be even better than driving back and forth and Mayo does not have parking for the med students. Thanks for your help!

Damn. It's been cold here Boston, but thats ridiculous...

I remember my senior year of HS, we had 2 cold days off of school, where it was too dangerous to be outside longer than a minute with exposed skin, for fear of frostbite. I remember the wind chill being 60-65 below 👎 Yeah, I DONT miss Michigan

My sister is in good ol' Minot, North Dakota. I visited her for Christmas and it was painful being there. I told her that I didn't think people were meant to inhabit such places, only polar bears.

Yikes. And I thought Ithaca was cold. It's in the single digits around here, but I think we've only hit the negatives once or twice this winter. The snow has been rough, though.

*represses memories of scraping a foot of snow off her car*
*wishes for a garage* 😀

Today Duluth had -53 wind chill. Why am I going to go there next year?? It could be worse though. I remember a few years ago when the wind chill actually hit -100 in parts of the state. DAMN!!!

The coldest it has gotten in Omaha since I've been here is -15 or so. What sucks is when it gets under 10 or so, you cant really breath out of your nose cause your nose hairs will freeze! I consider 25 degrees hot weather now.

Outer space?

Well we have now warmed up about 40 degrees... it is now a very comfortable 20F in Minneapolis! By tonight we will also have about 1 foot of snow since Saturday night. There is finally enough snow on the ground to get my snowshoes out... ;-)

And you are excited about it!!!! Well.. I had to do the snow three times yesterday, and I will have to do the same, AGAIN, today+pissed+ Man, I hate to do this!!!

It is warming up because of the high heat capacity of water... That's why we feel warmer when it snows... a good application of our physics, ha?😎

This air mass is also coming from the south, rather than from Canada... probably also has something to do with the warmer temps. I figure we can't do anything to stop the snow, so I might as well enjoy it.
