Hello all, I recently took the mcat and received a 28 total with 11 PS 7 VR 10BS as my subscores. My undergrad GPA was 3.7 cum and 3.6 science and I was wondering if the 7 verbal score is too low. Thanks.

Absolutely not. Apply to any DO school. If you apply to a handful you should have some luck. A 7, especially in verbal is totally cool. The cutoff is usually at 6

Thanks Awesome, I was disappointed with my verbal performance but I was really happy with my science scores and wanted to make sure that my verbal score wasn't too low.

I agree with awesome sauce.

I disagree with trying to tier them into DO and MD.

If the goal is to become a physician then retaking with a goal of 30+ would set the OP up for opening a whole new cluster of schools.

The number of DO schools is 30. The number of MD schools is over 4 times that.

To retake would greatly open more doors for the OP.

My retake was of much value for me. Even retook a course back then. It was costly and time consuming but in my experience and case, worthwhile.

Good luck either way.

Before I took the test I told myself if I got under a 30 I would retake.

What score were you expecting?
Were you doing better on practice exams?

A 28 is not a bad score, and if I were you I would apply.

That being said, if you have the time and you really want this, I would think about taking it again. 28 is below the national matriculation average and although you have a shot at any school, your chances increase with a better score.

Studying for the mcat takes perseverance...
Medical school is going to take perseverance...
Being a doctor is going to take perseverance.

you have a chance at some MD and almost all DO schools depending on the other aspects of your app.

have you started this year's application yet? if not, then i would maybe suggest waiting to apply until next year and in the mean time you could retake before the 2015 MCAT starts. if you have started primaries for MD right now - good luck.... if you haven't started primary for DO right now - get on it because you're running very short on time.

I intend on applying next year. Money is very tight right now and I need another year of work to afford the medical school application process. I am also planning on continuing clinical volunteering and shadowing as well. I dont plan on retaking the MCAT at this point, I hit my average and with my work and volunteering schedule, I dont want to risk doing worse on the exam.

I agree with your decision, neither a 28, nor a 7 in verbal is in retake territory, especially with your solid GPA.

I'm in the same boat as you. I got the same exact subscores, although my GPA from my undergrad was significantly lower. Good luck to you.
