So I was finally hired for a CNA position where I can work a schedule that combines 2nd/3rd shift together.

I graduated last May. I want to take a couple of science courses this next school year (fall and spring semesters) to increase my science GPA. Ever since I graduated I was trying to get a job in clinical research (as a coordinator or assitant). I had several interviews but never got a job. So a couple of days ago I contacted every person that I interviewed with to see why I was not hired. I found out that one of the university hospitals that I tried to get hired at ONLY hires from within. So I spent hundreds of dollars driving to this university hospital. I had one doctor that said I would be a great contribution to the department, but the person they hired volunteered there for a few years. How they could see volunteering in a clinical research envrionment trumps my 3 and 1/2 years as a (real) patient transporter (full-time employment) and a 1 1/2 year long internship where I learned about clinical research. So I got passed over by a person that was not paid for what they did and I WAS paid for what I did. When I read that I got pissed. Therefore, to trump this set-back, I want to volunteer in a clinical research setting to strenghten my application for medical school.

How do you go about asking a clinical research department about wanting to volunteer for them? I would be willing to volunteer about 10-15 hours or so a week.

Since I already have 2 years of experience as a lab assistant and did a summer internship, I was still getting passed over for research tech positions. Therefore, my experience in this area once again sucks balls. Therefore, I will volunteer my time in a research lab as well. How do you go about talking with a PI for volunteering time in their lab to go along with a couple of courses and the clinical research volunteership?

Here is my background:

B.S. degree in Biology

- Currently a research associate for an Internet based health information company (part-time)

- Medical writer (freelance)

- 1 1/2 years as a crises counselor

- 2 years as a lab assistant

- 1 1/2 year long intership at a hospital learning about clinical research and purging patient charts into the electronic database

- 3 1/2 years of employment as a patient transporter

- A summer research internship.

Even with all of this experience I still came up empty with employment because I didn't have enough experience. I hate these ex-nurses taking up clinical research jobs.

So my experiences suck! How to improve?

- Volunteer about 10 - 15 hours a week in a clinical research department?

- Volunteer about 10 -15 hours a week in a research lab?

- Get a certificate in clinical investigation from Boston University (online)

- Take more science classes (might as well pick up a biochemistry degree as I'm only a couple of classes away from it)

- Shadow! I will try to shadow every specialty their is (before school starts and volunteering in the other places). Shadow about 25 hours a week from April to Aug. = 550 hours (which goes on top of my 100 hours already!!!!!!!!!)

I hate these inside connections!

In the end, take the MCAT, go to a DO medical school, do the residency thing, become a doctor, and hire staff the right away by doing clinical research trials myself.

I'm not really sure...you lost me somewhere in there... 😀

I'd just email some PI's about volunteering. They often need unpaid labor to help coordinate research visits, chart filing, etc., etc. Send them your résumé at the same time you offer your time. I bet you'll have some luck if you cast a wide net. :luck:
