Hi guys,

I have my 2nd year ortho final exam this Wednesday and was wondering if someone could help explain something to me. In a slide on the use of functional appliances with class II malocclusions, the lecturer wrote in the slide "slip lower anchorage" as one of the bullet points. She was a guest lecturer and I don't seem to have any additional info in my notes on this point. I would really appreciate it if anyone has any insight as to what she meant? 😕

Thanks a lot! 🙂

Hey class-mate. Unfortunately I can't help you - I really zoned out during her lectures.

If one of the questions is "what is the function of a functional appliance in treating a skeletal class 2 malocclusion", just put "Slip lower anchorage" and the other three points on the slide, and you'll be fine.

In this case it sounds like "slip lower anchorage" means letting the lower molars come forward to achieve a class I occlusion at the end of treatment. The opposite would be to "hold/maintain" anchorage" when you want the molars to stay where they are and not "slip." I like your classmate's answer though. We learned so much of dentistry in dental school that way.
