3.0-3.1 GPA...what schools did you interview with and get accepted to?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It took me two application cycles.

Interviewed at UT-Houston, NYU, and BU.

Rejected at UT-Houston.
Waitlisted at NYU.
Accepted at BU.

I used Kaplan blue book, 1001 questions in chemistry, topscore, and some random textbooks depending on what material I was trying to get specific info about.

I studied 3 hours a day for about 5-6 weeks.

Then the week before the exam, I probably studied 6 hours a day.

Interviewed: Case, Temple, UF, MUSC, Louisville
Accepted: Case, Louisville
Waitlisted: Temple

3.1 overall, 3.0 science

I can't believe that you didn't get into Houston even with that awesome DAT score... I really need to go to Houston... What do you think the difference was between Houston and BU? I'm not even applyting to out of state schools, but may be I should seriously consider... Did you interview with Baylor and San Antonio?

I spoke with a few people from admissions at Houston and they told me that the average gpa for the incoming class is somewhere around 3.6-3.7 with a DAT of 18. They put a lot of emphasis on GPA, which I clearly lack. BU has a slightly higher DAT average, but their GPA standards are much, much less stringent.

Didnt get any call backs from Baylor or San Antonio.

Applied in late December

Applied to: UMDNJ, Columbia, Temple, Stonybrook, Michigan, Case Western, NYU, BU

Recieved interviews for: All except Michigan.

Only went to interviews for: UMDNJ, Columbia, Temple
Canceled the rest of them.

Accepted at UMDNJ (my first choice)
Waitlisted at Columbia, and Temple

I don't advise applying as late as I did.

Hey dentallover15,
Actually, you're partially right.
It was a combination of the fragments and also to the time I spent in Okazaki, Japan as a student last year too.
It's the name of the city where the school was.

Rezdawg,
I'm assuming that the 3.08 is overall GPA? What was your science GPA?

2.92 science

Were those the only schools you applied to? Are you a CA resident? What do you think my chances of getting into UOP, USC, or Loma Linda

GPA: 3.00 will be 3.02
Sci: 3.15 will be 3.17
DAT: AA: 20 PAT: 18
Planning on doing a one year masters. Thanks!

I also applied to UCLA but didn't turn in the secondary. I'm a CA resident, but applying to so few schools was probably not so smart. I just didn't know any better at the time, but it worked out ok, so I can't really complain.

I don't know too much about USC or Loma Linda admissions. Neither school interested me so I didn't apply. I would call UOP and ask them what they think. They're pretty forthcoming with opinions on whether they think you need to retake the DAT. They do tend to like 20+ on all sections except math.

I just called UOP but the lady seemed vary vague and was not forthcoming with opinions. She said doing a masters would be good, but there is a large applicant pool, etc...Do you think it would be a waste of time to apply?

Sorry they weren't helpful. I've always been able to get help. Maybe it was just the person you talked to, I dunno. Your stats are just below the average for UOP, so your chances may not be so good unless you want to retake the DAT. I'm not sure it's worth it, there are other schools out there you have a decent shot it.

bump

This is a good question...

Are there any dental school students that got accepted with a 3.0-3.2 gpa??
If so what were your other stats??

Thanks... just curious 🙂

hi gatszu,
so you're from ucla undergrad?? and also do you have research (srp, 199)? thax!

I have a fairly low gpa (around 3.0), and i've noticed a lot of posters on this thread also have low GPA's, but my question is, how did you manage to pull off excellent DAT scores?

Is there anyone here that peformed below average in the BCP classes, and still did well on the DAT? Or did everyone here do extremely well in these classes, and therefore did well on the DAT's.

You all should be very proud (I don't need to tell you that!), I've known people with above 3.6 GPA's who can only manage 18's and 19's.

If there is anyone that did not remember or do too well in the basic sciences during the semesters, how did you take on the DAT, and still do so well?

@bruinbear: i didnt do spr or 199. i did do some research w/a professor though. nothing formal, i just asked the professor if i could get involved/do research in his lab cuz i was interested. thehe said i seem bright enough, so he let me. i didnt get published or anything. as a matter of fact, i didnt even finished what i started. after 2 quarters, i realized i didnt have enough knowledge in the area i was reaserching and i didnt have the time to go more in depth, so i stopped.

@3_OH: some people are just lazy. i got through undergrad not doing homework and studying the night before. other people copy homework, lab reports, and work their butts off to maintain a high gpa. but in the end, they lack a true understanding and apprecipation for what they "learned."

How do you mean a one-year masters? Are you talking about a M.S. in perio, for example? I thought all M.S. in dentistry were 2+. Can you explain? I'm interested...

Thanks.

I think he means a one year masters program to enhance his application. There are a few programs out there that will give you a masters in biomedical science, or something related, in one year to better your app for med/dental school.
