Hi all,
I just received my MCAT score, so I'm looking for a little help on finalizing my school list and getting suggestions on what I should do during the next year to maximize my chances of landing a spot.
NJ resident, nontraditional student, 24 M, Asian American, applying 2014-2015 cycle
Academics 3.2 cGPA, 3.6 sGPA, 3.75 SMP (so far)
Top 20 Undergrad, 3.05 cGPA (ouch), social science major, had family and health issues that were a major part of my path to medicine (will explain in essays), upward (but bumpy) trend
+leadership experience, campus involvement, diverse coursework and work experience
-IA: freshman year alcohol violation, sophomore year academic warning
Premed Postbac, 3.66 GPA
+took 2 extra classes, participated in 6 months (class and paid) research
Masters (SMP), 3.75 GPA, only took two classes so far
MCAT 34 overall, 11PS, 10VR, 13BS (VR way below my AAMC average but I don't plan to retake for now)
Volunteer/Work/Medical Experience
200+ hours hospital, free clinic, soup kitchen, animal shelter volunteering
500+ hours ED medical scribe
100+ hours shadowing oncology, pathology, anesthesiology, surgery, hospitalists, etc
Work experience at a Congressman's office, real estate finance firm, chamber of commerce, etc
EMT B certification, Taekwondo black belt, aspiring polyglot
School List
MD: Temple, Tufts, UVM, RWJ, NJMS, Rowan Cooper, Hofstra, Albany, New York Medical College, Rosalind Franklin, Creighton, Quinnipiac, Tulane, Drexel, SUNY Upstate, Jefferson, TCMC, SUNY Downstate, Meharry, Penn State, EVMS, VCU, BU
DO: Touro NYC, PCOM, NYIT, Rowan
The school list is very much a work in progress and I'm looking to add around 10 more schools. I'm currently working on getting secondaries out as soon as possible. For the next year, my current plan is to finish the SMP (and do more research as a major part of it), continue scribing and do additional volunteering. An alternative (and more financially sensible) plan would be to find a full time job, possibly in research. I'll be glad to entertain any school suggestions and tips that could help improve my application. Thanks everyone, much love to SDN : )
