Hi SDN, thanks in advance for reading. I am a non-traditional Texas med school applicant looking for a little advice. First, my stats:
1.) GPA
cGPA: 3.41
sGPA: 3.57
Upward trend? Post-bac GPA is 4.0 – which includes OCHEM I/II and Biochem
2.) MCAT
2018: 518 (128/131/130/129), score is unfortunately no longer valid so I retook it
2023: 513 (127/131/127/128)
3.) State of residency
Texas
4.) Demographics
ORM
5.) Undergrad
State university in Texas
BS Biomedical Engineering
6.) Clinical experience
2 years full time employment in clinical research (current and ongoing)
7.) Research
1 year in undergrad of research assistant'ing
Total 8 years full time employment in bio/medical research
1 primary authorship
1 conference podium presentation
2 poster presentations
2 non-primary publications
8.) Shadowing
ER & OBGYN (my specialty of interest), total of 64 hours
9.) Non-clinical volunteering
Undergrad Greek org, 250hrs
Post-bac, STEM program for children, 100hrs
10.) Other extracurricular
Greek org, leadership (did a year each of president and secretary)
11.) Honors/Awards
National Merit Scholarship
Full tuition scholarship at undergrad
Eagle Scout
12.) Other
Early 30’s, married w/ children
3Q casper
Previously applied 2018-2019 cycle but did not complete secondaries due to circumstances, so I got no interviews
Current cycle:
I applied to most of the TMDSAS schools (minus El Paso, Lubbock, and RGV)
My applications were complete by first week of july
I have received 3 II's (UT Tyler, UTMB, Long), and I feel like the interviews went quite well
I am a little discouraged to not have received more II's. I am concerned that my relatively low GPA and MCAT score may keep me out of EY 2024. I'm not sure I have it in me to retake the MCAT and apply again, so my two questions for this board are:
1.) WAMC? Any insights into how nontrads with meh stats fare, or about Long/UTMB specifically would be appreciated
2.) Should I put in DO applications? I do have an interest in the holistic side of things, especially when it comes to maternal/fetal medicine, which is where I would like to practice
Thanks y'all!
