I'm entering my senior year at Baylor (TX resident) next semester. Baylor has a + system, which is not recognized by the TMDSAS so my GPA is a significant bit lower than it will be on the AMCAS.

TX schools will see overall GPA of 3.37 with a 3.32 in BCPM. I'm in the honors program which requires a thesis to be written during my senior year. So I will have 2 years of genetics research done by the time of graduation and a thesis. I have no publications or abstracts other than the thesis, however.

I scored a 32Q on my MCAT.

I have 6 months of ER volunteer work as of this month (adding up to 50 hours or so).

I have spent a month shadowing a surgeon.

I also have held the same job for 5 years now. I'm still working with the same company, but for the past two years I have been working in the pharmacy department. I'm a certified technician and work roughly 20-25 hours/wk during the semester, and around 30 in the summers.

My GPA makes me very nervous for TX schools, but I feel that the rest of my application is fairly strong. Only question is, is it strong enough to get some interviews despite the low GPA?

Out of state my GPA is a 3.51/3.47, so I'm not as nervous about getting into some of the OOS schools I've applied to. But anyway, somebody out there want to weigh in on my chances? Hopefully people familiar with applying to TX schools. Thanks!

If no one has any advice specifically about TX schools, I would also like to hear what people think of my chances OOS as well. Any thoughts?

Still curious, if anyone out there wants to sound off

You're probably fairly borderline. You might get a chance in TX, but I'm not sure. Make sure you perfect all your essays and nail the interviews you get. Your 3.5 will probably get you in somewhere OOS, though. Good luck!

I think you have a shot at TX schools. Perfecting your essays along with good interviews, just as Milkman said, would get you in. As for your concern about getting interviews, I think your essays could definitely land you an interview spot based on the information you've provided. Good luck 👍

Try and apply. You may get in. You never know. :]

You're numbers are decent. The gpa could be improved, but not much to do now, and your MCAT is solid. I went through the UC's, which are a little tougher than the TX schools, and numbers around 3.4 and 32 would have been borderline; but being from Baylor might help a bit. Your experience shows that you have an idea what you're getting into with medicine, and your job shows commitment and should be a good character rec. Taking all this into account, I think you have a very solid chance at getting into a UT school, but not Baylor. Your essay and LOR's need to be solid, you should score interviews, just do your best there, apply broadly OOS and you should be fine.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Yeah, I'm hoping my essays will push me into the threshold to get those interviews. I'm shooting for San Antonio because I feel a fit there, but I am still applying to Baylor as a reach school. Keeping my fingers crossed I won't have to pay out of state tuition, though the OOS schools I'm applying to seem like places I would be really happy too. Thanks again everyone!
