3.45 GPA: transcript: Please help...

I am posting cause I really screwed up during two semesters at Loyola University and I was wondering if it is possible for me to get into ANY US medical school with the grades I am going to post. What sort of MCAT score do I need, what other EC's do I need? Do I even have a chance of getting in?

My E.C. include 6 months at Children's memorial for about 55 hours, 70 hours of shadowing over a 4 month period of time, 2 years of community service through APO (fraternity) for about 25 hours a semester, research since this past summer as the lead biologist, 2 years on student board for my mosque, 50 hours of phlebotomy work for the past 6 months, I am going to be volunteering at Stroger hospital for 6 months.

My cumulative science GPA is at a 3.47 right now. Please if you have any information that would help, I would appreciate it. My worst semester was when i got a C in organic chemistry and had like 3 B-s. Give me your honest opinion. What sort of MCAT score do I need if I want any hope of getting into medical school here. Should I give up on MD and just go DO? Should I apply to an SMP program? I am freaking out and need some advice....

Your cGPA is low for MD schools; however, not too low. My advice to you is: Get both your cGPA and sGPA to 3.5+, then a 32+ MCAT will help your case tremendously if your are applying only to MD schools. On the other hands, for DO, your GPA is ok for now and 26+ MCAT will give you a decent chance. Also, you might need more clinical exposure. Dont worry too much; just kill the MCAT and you will be fine. Good luck...

A C in OChem II isn't so great. Are you planning to take Biochem, by any chance, next semester (to help redeem it)?

IMO with a 3.45 and three solid recent semesters of good academic work giving you an upward trend, you might be fine with an MCAT score of 33+. You need at least a 30 for SMPs to consider you at most places. You're fine for DO schools as Demayette said, but you'd need to retake the OChem II. I think your ECs, as projected, look fine.

Yes. Either that, or repeat the class.

You could retake it at a community college over the summer.

I do appreciate all the help guys. So what you are saying is pretty much I need a 33+ on my MCAT and I need to get more clinical time in. I would like to get my gpa above a 3.5 but in order to do that I would have to go to full time and spend 5,000 dollars and wouldn't be able to concentrate on my MCAT once school starts. Should I take 15 credit hours? If i do that and pull straight A's I will increase both my science and my overall gpa above a 3.5. But if i screw up one bit and get an A-, it won't happen. And also I won't be able to get as much time in to study for the MCAT. Let me know what you guys think....

IMO, Since the MCAT is key for you, consider taking a 12 hour credit load (or the minimum to be considered full-time), while studying for it/taking a formal prep course.

IMO the MCAT is far more important than GPA. If I were you, I would go part time in order to have more time to study for the MCAT.
Scenario 1: Let say you go full time and you increase your GPA to 3.5 and score 28 in the MCAT.
Scenario 2: Part time your GPA stay at 3.47 and you score 30 in the MCAT.
My point is that scenario 2 stats is much better than scenario.

realisticly.. i would recommend trying to redeem your normal gpa.. by possibily taking a easy minor..
and spenidng time to get a mcat score 28+
from there..
your path to DO is probably 100%
MD likely 50/50 < might be more if you have a colorful last name =)

But med school applications have just gotten tougher over the past couple of years. Are those stats still valid?

You can extrapolate. You can also see how higher/lower stats in various combos work for or against you. It helps one to keep things in focus.

TchnoZ33.. a bit off topic, but i was wondering if you have any recommendations on Orgo Chem teachers. Im a bio/pre-med freshman at Loyola in the Honors program. Also do you think it would be more difficult if I put a year between my gen chem and my orgo, as in taking orgo junior year instead of sophomore year? Im considering studying abroad sophomore year

Honestly, I wouldn't be the best person to ask about organic chem teachers. But from what I know May and Crumine are actually both amazing teachers. Crumrine is really fair about his grades and his tests and May is just an amazing teacher in general. My biggest recommendation is to just go to class, pay attention, keep up with the readings and problem work. Review everyday for an hour or 2 and honestly, its an easy class. Just don't get behind on the work. As for taking a year between g chem and orgo, there is no problem at all. Just keep in mind you will need orgo for your mcat, so as long as you know how to take care of that, it really isn't a big issue.
