Hey guys. Pardon the silly typical anxious pre-med question, but I'm applying for an early assurance program where the average GPA is usually 3.82+/- 0.02 (so 3.8-3.84). Coming in, I have an overall GPA of 3.78, with a science GPA of 3.74. My question is, will my 3.78 be the end-all for my application? What I mean is, will adcoms for this program see me as less competitive because my GPA isn't above their average?

I understand that this is a silly question, because plenty of people would probably kill to have GPAs like this, and it's probably immaterial in the long run. But this has been giving me a lot of unnecessary worry, especially with where I attend medical school on the line. Thanks for all your support.

Some programs have strict cutoffs. The only way to be sure is call the admissions office and ask politely

Their website says that they require you have a 3.7 overall GPA and a 3.5 science GPA, but they also list averages of people who matriculate. Am I that far off in terms of my grades?

You're above their cutoff. Unless you can raise your GPA to their average by the time you apply, why worry? I'd say chill out.

So they wouldn't not consider me for being 0.02 below their average then?

If you're that close to the average, no one will really bat an eye. Consider the fact that some students applying to those programs have 4.0 GPAs. If the average GPA is almost .2 lower, what does that tell you about the GPA range of applicants accepted? No need to worry at ALL

Man that 3.78 gpa is so bad... man how will you ever become a doctor?

If you stress about these things, I can't imagine how nervous you would be if they interviewed you. If you are a tiny bit below average in one area (emphasis on tiny), then be above average in many others. Some of them don't require performance, only effort.

your grades are fine. but by the tone of your question, I guarantee you won't make it past the interview.

I would like to hear how you have determined that OP will not make it past the interview by the tone of his post that you have picked up on an online forum?

The reason for my concern is because I've heard of programs (both early assurance and regular) that deny people solely based on whether their numbers exceed a certain benchmark. I'm just not sure how my app will be evaluated

Refer to my first post...? Just call the admissions office

There are no certainties in this process, not even for 4.0/40 applicants.

There's a difference between someone's tone and what they are actually saying though.
but there’s typically little difference between what someone writes and what they’re thinking. it is not hard to imagine OP going on about some other random small deficiency that he thinks needs to be addressed during the interview and come across as just another immature neurotic premed

I guess, but I thought doc05 was going on more than that when he made his claim. I can agree that being neurotic is not good in an interview.

You objectively know that people with 3.8>gpa>3.7 can get in. Whether or not YOU will get in is a question you should be asking the admissions committee of this program, preferably in application form.

Jesus OP if you're freaking out about this, then don't apply. If you don't feel confident about your app for ED, then just do regular admissions. If you get rejected from ED, then your app will be really late and you'd be way less competitive.
