Hello all. I had a rather disappointing experience over this current cycle ('21-'22) and only wound up with 1 interview that turned into a WL. I need some help to improve my app under the assumption that I'll need to re-apply (how I'm approaching my situation).

I'm:
-25
-White male
-Live in and from TX
-Upper-middle class background

Stats:
-3.7 cGPA/3.8 sGPA
-507 (126/128/127/125) - already studying to retake this for next cycle
-B.S. in Speech Pathology/Audiology from UT-Austin, completed a post-bac program with a 3.9

ECs:
-400 hours shadowing for an ENT physician - I began shadowing for an ENT physician at the start of my post-bac program
-200 hours clinical work as a speech therapist in undergrad - I administered speech therapy for stroke survivors and children with communication impairments at 2 separate facilities
-500 hours work as a staff member of my college radio station - I worked as the department head for our membership unit, training new members and facilitating orientation
-500 hours research - I work as an RA for a lab studying social cognition of autistic adults
-200 hours interning with a local speech therapist - I did clinical observations of a speech therapist while in undergrad

Employment:

Currently
-Scribe/assistant for the ENT doctor with whom I began shadowing. I room patients, take histories, write scripts, and follow the physician through physical exams. I also recently underwent training, sponsored by my employer, to conduct hearing tests for our office audiologist. I've been conducting full-length, diagnostic hearing tests for a few months now
-Office aide for local speech therapist. I work insurance and assist with clinical work for a speech therapy office

Prior
-General & Organic Chem Tutor on Wyzant - maintained a 5-star review with 30-50 responses
-Call center worker for undergrad alumni association - worked to collect donations for my undergrad
-Cashier at a local grocery store
-Retail associate at a clothing store

Had 5 strong LORs, wrote a nice PS (friends and family who read it felt it flowed quite well), but submitted most of my secondaries around early Aug., which I realize now is kind of late.

Thanks to any and all who've read this far.

How many schools did you apply to?
MCAT is low for MD. App has some unnecessary fluff IMO.

25 schools. Yeah, I agree. really was hoping it'd be higher but felt like I wanted to go through the cycle trying for MD. In hindsight, should have added DO schools + prepared more for MCAT.

Apply again to all your Texas MD schools but also apply broadly to DO schools and I suggest these:
TCOM
SAM HOUSTON STATE
UIWSOM
OSU-COM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
MU-COM
CUSOM
PCOM
LECOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
For AMCAS MD schools you could try these:
TCU-UNT
Tulane
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Hackensack
Quinnipiac

thanks much for your advice - will do

Where is your nonclinical volunteering focusing on the unserved/underserved in the community? I really don’t see any and you need about 200 hours of service to the disadvantaged. Stop shadowing the ENT. 400 hours is overkill but ask the doctor if he has a friend who is a primary care Doc and shadow that doc for a day or two. What were the two facilities where you did your SPL undergrad rotations? I have no idea how you presented this as clinical services but if this was the only clinical experience you had last cycle that might be the problem. What have you done to significantly improved your application for the upcoming reapplication! If you’d share your list from last cycle perhaps we could see if the issue is a bad list!

No, that is a good point. My SLP undergrad rotation at the stroke clinic was non-profit, and for underserved individuals. The school work was volunteer but not focused on underserved communities
