Hello,
I might drop to a 3.89 GPA this semester. May be, not sure. Is a 3.89 GPA much different than 3.90? I know I might lose the highest graduation latin honors with the fall in the GPA but will someone with a 3.90 GPA have a BIG edge over one who has the same stuff except a 3.89 GPA? THANKs

3.9 will have a HUGE advantage over you. You may as well give up everything and try and find work as a sanitation engineer, though that may be a strectch with only a 3.89.👍 👍

Your post history doesn't look like that of a troll so I can only assume you're actually serious when you ask that question...

My advice to you is to start drinking, heavilly. You should listen to me, I'm pre-med.

This HAS to be a troll. No-one is that thickheaded.

HUGE difference. A 0.01 one at that.

Let's trade GPA pinkslips, you take mine and I'll take your 3.89.

that is very unfortunate that you weren't able to achieve 3.90 especially because you have 3.89. i think you might want to consider doing a postbac program to boost-up your gpa.

It was actually a serious question but some of you guys made a real joke of out of it. I was just a confused pre-medical looking for some clarification.... oh well 🙁 . Will be careful next time before I post.

😱 😱 I dunno but I think you should be more concerned about how you're gonna survive past 30 without any common sense..

Wow. The first thread I've ever read and been absolutely appauled.

Hmm...I've heard a lot of med schools have a 3.9 cutoff for secondaries...so you might be screwed in that department. You can always take basket weaving or scuba diving to try and get that GPA to a 3.9, if not, try to get at least 50 more volunteer hours to offset the difference....GOOD LUCK

Don't worry dude. The pre-allo playground is a rough place. You just made the mistake of wearing your pocket protector on the first day of class. Just be grateful this is an anonymous forum otherwise you'd be hanging from something by your underwear.

Rock on with your 3.9.

You're fine. Just get a baller MCAT score.

Your 3.89 is FINE, fantastic, wonderful. Please, don't worry about this! Your GPA is high/great, and that's it. GPAs like 3.7/3.8/3.9 are all high. Save your worrying for medical school itself.

Just be grateful this is an anonymous forum

this phrase keeps popping up around here. Aren't you people aware that your anonymity is only as deep as the email address you registered with? The admins, not unlike a freshman girl with self esteem issues at a frat party, just give it away for free. 👍

oh but sorry to derail this bullet train of a thread 🙂

Realistically it makes no difference and shouldn't hurt you. You're above the national average and also the average for most schools.

The sticker price effect is what will kill you.. Basically, your GPA seems lower than it really is since you're now mentally placed in the 3.80 to 3.89 category instead of the 3.90 to 3.99 category.

I don't get it? 😕
So some people should know what school I go to by my email, right?

you might still be able to get into Stewart U SOM

more like admissions office calls SDN admins and ask for email address of particular SDN member, admin gives adcom said email address.

SDN member is foolish either because (a) they applied to med schools using the same email address as the one they used to register on SDN

or (b) they think SDN admins actually HONOR that privacy policy that everyone needs to agree to when they sign up. 👍

Everyone here is so mean, it makes me cry. Anyway, obviously he knows that a .01 difference in GPA will not matter, what he is curious about is how much it would help to have summa cum laude or w/e on his transcript as opposed to not having it.

IMO with that strong of a GPA, not being able to list the highest latin honors on your app will not hurt you. Your still basically guaranteed acceptances to many good med schools, assuming your MCAT's are decent.

yes because the hallmark of "nice" is blowing sunshine up someone's ass until they explode.
go ahead and look up the number of people with 4.0s that don't get in anywhere, much less "many good schools" before you go offering money back guarantees. 👍

I guess the real question is...if I had a 3.9 (and I really wont ever have a 3.5) then should I round it up to a 4.0?

considering AMCAS calculates your GPA for you and you probably won't have a 3.90, your question is lame.

But if I were you I would round down because it makes you seem more impressive.

An interviewer asked me what my gpa was and I said "about 3.5" instead of "3.52" and it worked for me. By the SDN law of transitive anecdotal experience it should work for you too!

Hi guys, I have a 2.94 GPA. Will raising it up to a 3.0 help me at all? I really need to know this.

why stop there? raise it up to a 4.0 if you want a shot at a top 10.

yeh forget med school with that GPA, you will be doomed ...

Well hey, we're talking about lots and lots and lots of hundreds of thousandths of points.

Just to clarify, SDN does not share any user information with outside entities including, but not limited to, school admissions committees. We take the privacy of our members seriously.

Give the guy a break, he is new and does not know everything.Jeesh! Everyone knows that if you want a top ten shot you need a 46 T on the MCAt!🙄

easy enough to say that, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Maybe you should clarify the privacy policy with the SDN member you people gave up and the dean of admissions who requested that you do so?

Hasn't happened.

if you can say that without equivocation, great. An SDN member has communicated with me via PM that this exact scenario happened to him/her. Sure, he/she could be lying. If he/she is, nobody has anything to worry about.

But then again, if one of your admins did do this, why on earth would you feel obligated to advertise it on the forums?

Point is, just because the privacy policy is supposed to protect member privacy, it doesn't mean it does.

Let me clarify.

No volunteer with SDN has passed along personal information to an adcom or anyone else. If there is evidence otherwise, we will take action.

You or the member in question can feel free to PM me or Lee Burnett with more details.

I'll leave it up to him/her. I just wanted to get it out there. my work is done.

I realize that you may be concerned about your drop in GPA, and certainly about people's reactions to your concern. The thing is, you know that 3.89 is an awesome GPA. And we know that you know. And you should realize, deep down, that the difference between a 3.89 and 3.9 is .01, and that's it. So those of us out there with lower GPAs feel like you might be flaunting it a bit, and we read your post as "whine whine whine 3.9 GPA whine whine whine 3.89 whine whine." Your initial concern gets completely lost in the aftermath.

So, in short, you will be fine. And people on SDN (myself included) can be quite snarky to people who complain about their very high GPAs. So take a deep breath and feel lucky that you have such a solid GPA to put on your AMCAS app.

In fact, many adcoms add up all three digits to give you a numerical score between 0 and 21. Your 3.89 is much better than the 3.90.

can somebody delete threads like these?

Yes and those people have bad MCAT scores, notice I said a nice MCAT also.....
