I've been perusing different forums in hopes of finding a definitive answer to this, and after finally getting to a recruiter today (Navy) I'm kind of hoping I haven't shot myself in the foot. I recently decided (this week) I'd like to go the military route, most specifically the AF or Navy (family background in both). I figured I missed the 4 year and so am gunning for the 3 year scholarships. I called up Navy recruiter and finally got in touch with him today. He told me that the 3 year scholarships all go to previous 4 year applicants who were placed as "alternates" or at least, that's how it's happened over the last three years. He also said the last applications are due March 1 so basically, I missed my shot for the Navy.

My question is then, does the AF do the same thing? Am I completely hosed with those two routes or can a D1 apply and get one of the HPSPs to cover the last three years?

Looking for current/recent 3 year Navy and AF recipients to comment if possible.

Thanks y'all!

They don't know, a girl in my class didn't start her application for the Navy until school even started and was still able to get the 4 year once the new budget year started, which is Oct 1st. So she started school and her application in late July and was commissioned on Oct 1st. The only thing she missed out on was the stipend for August and September, all other fees and tuition etc. was backpaid.

It's probably just a slim chance of anybody getting it this late in the game and your recruiter doesn't feel like doing all the work (cause it's a lot) for nothing. That's how some recruiters are and others are the complete opposite. Kind of a crapshoot on what you get.

I am in my 4th year dental student and I have a 3 year Air Force scholarship. Get in touch with the recruiters in May/June before starting your first year. Alternates probably have an easier time getting a 3 year but I did not apply until my first year of dental school. I contacted my recruiter in June and just had to wait around for updated paperwork to come it. It is a long process so get started early. Idk about Navy. I only applied for the Air Force.

Are you currently a D1? If so, I know the Air Force boards have already met and made their decision.

Navy is the only branch I know of that offers three year scholarships to their four year applicants who weren't selected. There might be other options with the national guard or looking into a two year scholarship.

Thank you for your input. Would it be alright if I PMed you to ask some questions?

Not currently but I start this fall and wanted to see about starting the app process now for the 3-year programs.

Did you go through MEPS before or after sending your paperwork to the boards? If I am going to D1 in august, when would be a timeline to have everything submitted by for the 3 year AF scholarship?

I think you have to have everything submitted by late july for AF

MEPS was after the selection. They don't want to waste time on someone who isn't selected. I was notified that I got the scholarship in late November and MEPS was at the end of December.

My year was different because we had to wait on new paperwork so my stuff wasn't submitted until September. I think it is normally submitted in July.
