1) When you do clinical rotations in 3rd/4th year, is there a shelf exam at the end of each rotation that counts for your grade? (like in medical school?)

2) What are the core rotations that everyone has to do & how many are specific to podiatry?

3) How much time does your school give you to study for the boards (part I)

4) How many chances are you given to successfully pass the boards? (per school policy)

Thanks so much for your help! I'm trying to evaluate what student life is like as a pod student and your input is much appreciated! 😀

1) Nope, Our attendings decide whether or not we pass and submit student evaluations to our school.

2) At Scholl we have ER, IM, Gen Surg, and 4 required Podiatry Rotations

3) As far as time off, we got 3 weeks after 2nd year was over and then the 10 days leading up to boards. But the majority of studying was done while we were still in school or capstones.

4) Not sure, I believe 3. Boards are tough but if you don't pass it after that many tries you might want to reevaluate your life and your decision to go into podiatry

1. As stated before - student evals by the attending at the rotation site

2. At Temple you have 3 clerkships and 5 externships in 3rd and 4th year. Clerkships are your pick of any 3; IM, Ortho, Vascular, Neuro, or Cardio and are not limited to podiatry as you are rotating with your DO and MD counterparts. Externships are largely podiatry rotations but you can also do some out-of-scope things as well.

3. Some schools end later than others in the year (which is why boards were pushed back this year compared to last year but still in July). Temple students had 6 weeks off between 2nd and 3rd year. However, they usually start back in June and perform clinic duties in the morning and are done at noon to go study. Once July hits you have no clinic or classes and study for the boards. Temple also has optional board review classes in the afternoons after clinic duties.

4. There is technically no limit to how many times you can take the board exam. There is, however, a $900 cost each time you take it so that may be your limiting factor 😉 Some schools will also not let you sit for boards in July if they feel you will not pass. Temple does not do this.

Just to clarify (unless they changed things for your class) IM is required for all students. You enter a lottery to determine when/where you do your IM rotation as well as the other two as there are only a certain number of students allowed on each rotation/month. IM/Cardio satisfies your IM requirement, so it's not really a separate rotation. The only rotations you're missing are Infectious disease and "rotating podiatry" months, which the school created to address the shortage of IM spots. While you have to do 5 externships, you can also take a vacation month to fit in another or repeat two months at one hospital if you really like it and they have space for you.
