what do peope know about rotations? I'm from san diego....if i went to somewhere like DMU or OSU or somewhere far away, would I be able to do my core rotations in san diego, or do most schools require you do it at a hospital in the town of the school or something. i dont know much about that process yet. i think if i knew i could come back to sd for rotations it would make going away from so cal for thsoe first two years a lot easier.

i also am interested am doing international rotations. ive always wanted to go to south africa. what do you guys know about different programs and international opportunities. is that offered at most if not all schools? is there a school known for freedom to choose anywhere in the world? im kind of in the dark here but its something that is important for me when its time to choose what schools to apply/matriculate to

I dont believe either of the schools have anything set up in San Diego as far as rotations, but as for DMU we have various international/global health programs.

Every school has their own core sites. I don't know that any schools have core sites in San Diego.

Seriously, are you that attached to Southern California that you think that leaving for school will really cause you problems? You can always come back when you're all done. It's not going anywhere.

i dont think it will cause me problems. its a comfort thing. its scary goin away from something ive always known. but ill get over it, and if not, ill just go to western. its not something in too worried about.

Most medical schools have students perform their entire 3rd year at local hospitals.

The vast majority of your 4th year is entirely up to you (you may still have a couple of core rotations here and there that you'll be required to complete at a predetermined location). You arrange all of your electives/sub-i's at whatever hospital you like.

You can do a few rotations during your 3rd year out of state, and almost ALL of your 4th year rotations out of state.

Hey ryserr21,

I too, am from SD and considered freedom of rotations an important factor when checking out schools. What I found to be true of all medical schools is that they have their own core rotations where you have to do rotations at places they give you (during 3rd year). But all schools give you elective rotations where you do the rotations anywhere you want, you just have to set it up yourself. I've noticed that CCOM and PCOM have the most elective time where you have almost complete freedom to do rotations anywhere in the US during your 4th year. This way if you wanted to come back to SD for residency you just do most of your 4th year rotations in SD and show the programs how awesome you are, along with excellent board scores and great recommendations. As for international rotations, some schools set them up and most are very open to you setting that up as long as it is safe. Good luck with everything!!!:luck::luck:

thanks to all that replied, good insight!

Well here at DCOM we got core rotations for 6 months, 3 month electives (3rd yr) and 4th yr electives duh. So beyond the core rotations you are in control of your electives..so i suppose you can always work out something with an international site. I would still check with the medical school to make sure if they would recognize a hospital lets say in south africa to be an appropriate learning experience for ya. I believe a lot of students do international rotations during their summer breaks..the important aspect about rotations is though that you get some elective time during your 3rd year to explore whatever options you have on your mind...Good luck!
