i met a guy today who said in person that he got a 43 on the MCAT this january. he said he felt terrible after the test and was absolutely shocked at the result.

apparently, all he did was take the AAMC exams back to back right before the exam, and got the result he did.

to be frank, i am shocked.

now, a 43 is in a league of its own....but does it REALLY happen?

can people REALLY get a 40+ via luck and minimal studying?

He was lying.

This. Or, like in the real world, people do hit the lottery.

More likely he completely made it up to impress you or was trying to play off the effort he put into it (either to make sure he doesn't come off as snobby or because he's embarrassed for some reason of the work/time he put in).

if your an attractive female, and this guy spoke to you + said he got a 43, then he was lying with a capital L.

43 is so high...sigh...

i'll find out about my score soon, and realistically, i am looking at a 33 with a 12/11/10 (projected).

at this point, i am ready to go DO and settle for perhaps general surgery or emergency medicine, two specialties that are at least reasonable for DO graduates.

the MD ship has set sail into the sunset, and there's nothing i can do about it.

It's not cool to say you studied all summer to score highly

IRL I'll tell people I studied for like a week or two beforehand

i guess...but still...43 is the 99.9th percentile...

and a 33 is the 90th percentile...

night and day, night and day...

Easy, have him show you the MCAT on his phone (assuming he has a smart phone).

Or a picture. I wouldn't show people openly unless asked but I would definitely carry some sort of proof for when people ask "Whats your MCAT?"

Wow the ego..

Why don't you actually take the test first before you start planning how you will tell people of your high score..

Seriously? How pretentious could you be? Carrying around proof of your MCAT score that doesn't matter beyond the scope of medical school applications?

speaking of ego...a moral/prude christian girl told me that she studied for a week and pulled a 36...up until then, she really did seem like a really humble and genuine person.

Totally get you. You should be proud of whatever you score on the MCAT but there's really no reason to feel the need to advertise it to the world.

I've posted my score on these boards once.. only to prove the value of retaking a score that is generally thought of as no re-take territory. Unless a friend asks me straight up what I got, I won't tell them a score and just use general words. Throwing in lies about preparation time is hilarious.

I'm betting he actually scored a 23, but added a few points to be impressive.

Aka: Liar liar pants on fire.

was trollin u buddy

43 with minimal studying? Mathematically possible. But very improbable. He was likely lying, exaggerating, or severely understating the level of his preparation.

Are you a guy? If so, that's a super attractive attitude. It's refreshing to meet men secure enough with themselves to let their accomplishments speak for themselves and not brag or put other people down in order to look good. 🙂

yes i am a guy...but are you complimenting me? or is it just sarcasm?

i am just curious

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is that it's possible if you are someone with incredible test-taking ability who aced all of his or her pre-requisites at a competitive university (yes, you learn more at a better school and that's that for now) and got lucky on the exam. It is also possible for me to win the lottery tomorrow if I buy my first ticket tonight.

In short, the 1% of the 1% of MCAT takers. Do with that what you will.

Pfft, with my stats I can't be pretentious.

And I guess the picture thing is pretentious (but I would take a picture and just look at it for myself) but this is something easily verifiable.

Wasn't saying you were pretentious, just your hypothetical guy who carries a picture of his MCAT score next to a picture of his nieces in his wallet

I smell photoshop accusations incoming....

Surprise! That's not really his niece!

Unless this guy aced all his prereqs and had all the material down, he's lying. I can see someone getting lucky with no prep and scoring in the low-mid 30s, but a 43? Not believable.

You sound upset

It's very possible. I studied for 2.5 weeks while doing graduate research and scored a 33. I only did 3 full lengths--one from EK, free AAMC 3, and AAMC 11. I know two other people who studied for 3 weeks and pulled 36's. There's a fellow who was a Chem E major (3.3 GPA) who pulled a 40 with two weeks of review, and doing only 2 full lengths in that time frame. Some people are just intellectually gifted and fast thinkers, although I wouldn't put myself in that category. But these people actually DO exist.

I wouldn't have believed he got a 43 with no prep but when I read he took the AAMCs back to back it seemed plausible.
Just think about how he prepared compare to how many of us prepare for the MCAT.
All that he knew was what he got out the pre-reqs, which is enough, so now all that he learned for the MCAT was how to take the test, I bet by the 2nd to last exam his strategy towards the test was simply to completely use any background knowledge he could remember but focus on whatever the passage told him, which always gets you huge points. As far as verbal it might have been a combination of what I just said and maybe he likes to read a lot?

Not saying I really believe him though, he probably put in some hardcore reviewing for at least 3-4 weeks and then took the FLs, no one would be that stupid to waste them and then score a 43..

cue the violins...

My friend got a 40 after a week of studying (he did all the aamc exams the week before)... But that's because he was a TA for all the Pre-med classes, and he was acing these courses at our University (and the science classes at my university are tested at a Graduate level...). He was literally so legit, it made sense. He was studying for the classes 24/7, so no doubt the basics of the sciences he was studying would be easy to him. Right after he took the exam he said he thought he bombed it. A month later, he obviously didn't... So hence, having the experience behind him it is possible. For this person, it is also possible. The thing you have to consider is his luck as well, he may have gotten all questions about concepts he knew well. I doubt he would've consistently gotten a ~43 on his exams. The fact that I majored in Biochemistry helped me a lot in the Bio side of things.
But I mean, in the end, I wouldn't think of it as a huge deal. Unless he's a close friend, you don't need to care what the others got. Just focus on yourself! 🙂 This is all my 2 cents.

Nah I know someone who studied for 2 weeks and got a 43; he's a genius though.

Kringle: I know I do not have any authority to say this, but DO NOT gravedig posts. This post is from 2013; probably around 75 percent of these responses are from inactive FSN users.
