First of all, I did not have the guts to even ask this...I am seriously grateful for the student who posted the 3.2 GPA, bottom 1/3, top 10 med, 205 step 1, MD/PhD in the match stats b/c she/he gave me some confidence to keep dreaming about being a radonc.

I have honored only IM (so A) w/ half b+ (3.5) and half B(3.0) on clinical rotation. I found out in med school that I can't memorize worth ****.

I went to a top 20 undergrad and have two masters degress (MS and MPH from top schools) leading to 2 first author rad onc papers, 2 first author abstracts in rad onc translational research, and 9 poster presentations. Heres the plus: I have 3 big wig letters of recs that love me but were shocked about how bad I did my first two yearss

I also did two fellowships program before medical school from ivy schools in preventative medicine.

Seriously, how bad am I? I will apply to all programs. Do I only have a shot at uc irvine (b/c its on probation?)

thank you

A Baylor rad onc resident who works with me for research as a med student had similar credentials, fewers letters. Another (MDACC resident) who worked with Buchholz was worse, but wrote 5 papers while a med student (all retrospective stuff) - he matched at MDACC. In fact that guy actually was the last one admitted to his med school class as well. The last slot is just as good as the first.

I was formerly interested in rad onc and may still decide to go for it depending on how much I conclude that my decision to change to another specialty was influenced by being scared of not matching. I have similar stats as you and I always feel all alone because it seems like we have one of the rarer situations. Plenty of people have the good grades, relatively low step 1 combo. I'm always worried that someone's going to think I'm a slacker genius that decided to try only on step 1 when in reality, it's that I suck at memorizing and end up finally getting all the info into my brain in time for step 1. So, as a fellow student that can't memorize, I'm just offering some moral support. Good luck!
