I was hoping for some advice from the SDN community.

I'd like to do a 4th year elective at USC this coming October. I'm not interested in matching at USC or in California at all, though. I'm interested in radiology as a career, but not necessarily as an away elective. The emergency medicine elective at USC looks interesting.

I have a few questions for people who are at USC, who've done similar things, or have advice in general on the following points:

1) Is October too early to be doing fun electives? Do October grades affect match outcome? Should I be doing an elective at home where I can get another LOR instead?
2) Is it all right to do an away elective in a hospital and department where I have no intention of applying for residency?
3) How is the EM elective at USC? Do fourth year students generally have a good hands-on learning experience? What are the attendings/residents/staff like? What are the hours like?
4) What is the radiology elective like at USC?
5) What are some good electives at USC for someone who's pretty much interested in learning about anything?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I'd appreciate any input. I'm basically just trying to spend time with my grandparents and make it to my cousin's wedding without having to take two red-eye flights in three days. I'm also interested in not doing any damage to my residency application (by which I mean: poor evaluations from a random away elective, losing an opportunity to strengthen my application to east coast radiology programs, etc).

Thanks so much!

This is what USC says on the EM clerkship application:
"During July to December, due to space limitations, we will only accept students who plan to apply to our emergency medicine residency program."

So you may not be able to do an EM rotation in October...

I did a CT/Trauma rotation there in August. October might be a little early for a "fun" elective - most people are still auditioning for interviews then.

The ER there is incredibly busy, as you may imagine.
