I am interested in doing Anesthesiology and would preferably like to end up in Chicago (I am looking into UC, UIC, Rush, and Loyola), has anyone had any experience (bad or good) at these institutions they care to share?

I am also looking into other programs in the midwest, D.C. area and North Carolina as well, so if anyone has any first-hand info on any other programs that would be appreciated also. Thanks.

I rotated at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, NC and thought it was a good visiting student rotation. I had a lot of autonomy and freedom to select the rooms/cases/subject matter that I wanted to see. It was my 3rd elective and it was a bit later so I already had my letters, but it would have been no issue to find and work with particular attendings. The residents were great, if you show interest, they'll definitely let you do as much as you feel comfortable with. Towards the end of my time there, one resident basically stood back and let me run the case with his (very close) supervision.

Strengths of the program: Regional, OB and they're probably one of the more close-knit programs I've come across. Also, they do a pretty good amount of research.

Weaknesses of the program: They're not as big of a tertiary care center as other places you might be looking (i.e. they don't do all the big transplants). Winston-Salem is definitely a smaller town...Definitely a different feel than Chicago. Still, it's a nice place.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
