can someone PLEASE give me some feedback on the following hospitals in NYC? I am from NYC...go to LECOM (erie, PA) and so ppl here don't know much about those hospitals. I would really like to be home (but having a good learning experience is very important to me). The only feedback I got from the school's clinical office is - 'since this location is on our list, than it's a good enough site'.

so, if you know anything about the following sites (even if not from personal experience) please do tell!!! We, new yorkers from LECOM would very much appreciate it. 🙂

Good Samaritan, Long Beach, and Brookhaven are not "New York City" hospitals - they are all on Long Island.

Good Samaritan is in Suffolk County on the South Shore, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours from Manhattan. It's a large community hospital in a nice area that's expanded a lot in the last 10 years but still fairly unexceptional. They do have a very busy OB/GYN facility. Most of the tough cases there get turfed to the big Nassau County or NYC hospitals.

Brookhaven= similar to Good Sam, farther east.

Long Beach = Nassau County. Known as "the nursing home with an ICU". Enough said there.

Peninsula Hospital and St. John's = crappy community programs the ACGME won't touch (which is why the AOA has taken over GME there).

Now that I've said all that, I should say that any of those hospitals are OK if all you want to do is kill time before your next rotation and maybe score a recommendation letter of dubious influence. If you really want to learn, though, I recommend looking elsewhere.

For real, none of those places are NYC. Peninsula Hospital and St. John are in queens, but in Far Rockway. That's like the southern most point in queens as far away from the city as possible.

Hey guys, thanks so much!!! That was very helpful 🙂

I realize that these sites aren't in NYC (but this is all we've got under NYC rotations) = really sucks. I live in manhattan, but I would be willing to be an hour away if it was worth it. even 2 hours would be OK as long as I could come home on the weekends. We have some locations in philly and jersey I believe, but I know absolutely nothing about those. Guess I'll have to stick to pittsbugh, PA (many nice options there).

thanks again
